I don't care about either of these people, but from a business standpoint, they get rich because people who don't really have money go to their concerts, buy their albums, etc.

If no one invested money into their products, they would be nobodies.

Tipping goes a long way in the service business, it not only gets you better service, but you often get more than what you paid for.

It's unbecoming to have money, but a broke mentality.

Why do people get a tip for doing their job? Funny--I work 7:00 am to usually 5-6pm. I don't get tips for doing good work--I am expected to always do good work. Same thing with the people who work for minimum wage at McDonald's --they don't get tips either (and usually do a good job).

Tipping is just another way for corporations to externalize costs onto their patrons, especially at high end hipster bars and restaurants. Under federal law, tips can be included in an employee's compensation calculation so that restaurant owners do not have to pay the full stated minimum hourly rate.

If some pretentious strumpet asks for my ID (I am 26 and usually in a suit)-- I tell her that just like her company, which has a policy of checking ID's, I have a policy of not tipping servers when asked to show my ID.

If she insists and guests are present, I will oblige and quip that at my age I take it as a compliment. Then, when the check comes she gets a goose egg with a sentence explaining to her that I don't show my ID to anyone.

Brazilians and Arabs are the absolute worst tippers on the planet. Worse than Indians, Chinese, and Jews even. Europeans are generally bad, too: especially Germans, Russians, and Greeks. English, Danes, Italians, and French are generally good. American blacks, especially the ghetto variety, are generally bad unless you stand-up to them and show them you have balls. I've gotten tipped fat a few times from some black cats, but most of the time, they don't tip whites. I've called them out on it, too, which has made for some hilarious moments. If they pull the racist card, I tell them I'm Bulgarian and that my people were far more oppressed than theirs and that they should stop being such shitty human beings. I got a $100 tip from some Chinese from Chongqing surprisingly on Christmas day, so there are exceptions of course. I 'made' their vacation they said. I went above and beyond to entertain, transport, and ensure their safety. I had a billionaire a few weeks ago with a net worth of 4 billion and he only tipped $20. I had him for 2 hours. When you come to the U.S. and don't conform to the set standards of tipping 20%, you deserve to get your head beaten in. I stand by that statement 100%.

Bit off topic, but I think tipping should be abolished. Yes, I realize that would raise restaurant/bar prices but here are the benefits:

1. No awkwardness (apologize for the use of this word) as to how much you should tip, separate bills etc.

2. Higher-priced restaurant meals would force many people to eat/cook at home, thereby putting a dent in obesity. At the least, it wouldnt hurt.

Abolishing tips isn't very American in the sense that we live in a high stakes gamble.

A bartender will often see great fluctuations in their income based on how the night goes.

They can make hundreds of dollars on some nights and almost nothing on others. A really good bartender knows how to milk the customers.

The tip forces the server to bring it. The only time no tip is left is if the server is really awful. But, at that point, I'd rather talk to the manager because I'd feel uncomfortable not leaving any tip.

Taking the tip out would could make servers less personable with customers, and most of the reason why people go out to drink is for the social experience (otherwise they'd just drink at home). Going to restaurant or bar isn't going to an office. The vibe is everything.

Tips also allow people to show off by leaving a lot of money.

Before I could go to Mexico City Airport and the baggage handlers would be happy to handle my luggage (with their dollies), one could tip them 5 pesos and they would be happy.

Now I got to Mex City Airport or Monterrey's bus terminal the baggage handlers provide horrible customer service and complain when you tip them 10 pesos for two bags, they expect 5....dollars.

Those farts throw one's luggage off when they are paid ~1 dollar for 10 minutes of work.

Bartenders and waiters get paid almost nothing and rely completely on tips. Some of them don't get paid at all.

If it weren't for bars, there would be no safe public spaces to get a girl drunk in.

When I was a server, foreigners got the benefit of the doubt because I knew that I would be rewarded in another way, shape, or form.

In the US, servers and bartenders are essentially unpaid by their "employers" as they rely on the 20%+ tips to survive.

I always tip 20-40% depending how good my service is in North America, but it's around 10% for any sort of full-service restaurant if I'm sitting at a table overseas.

What I do not get however are luggage people at airports depending fat ass tips for essentially such little work. What is their salary situation like?

This is why service in Germany is SHIT. The tip is already factored into the bill. That's right, you have already paid him his 10-15% by the time he hands you the check.

If I already knew I was getting a tip and that I lived in a country of tightwads who would never tip on top on that, why would I go to any great lengths to provide better service?

Pro Tip: If you've traveling in a country that factors in tip, ask the waiter for directions (to bank, train station, etc...) before paying the tip. They know North Americans are more likely to not know that the tip is factored into the bill and leave something on the table. Ask the question and then stiff those assholes...they deserve it.
