RE: Stock Market 2014
I'm keeping an eye on FXI, the China largecap ETF. I actually just bought some puts on it today.

It's been down something like 12-15% over the last 4 months. China's GDPs numbers hit far below expected growth. Already 1-2 big credit defaults in the last 2 weeks with several more rumored. We'll see how it pans out. The Chinese govt is obviously going to everything it can to keep it peachy-clean (kinda also like the US govt) so the plunge tilt won't be going as fast as the bears make it to be, esp with China weakening the RMB. It'll be fun to watch this play out.

At a time when most US internet companies appear to be fully valued, Im looking at buying Yandex (YNDX) on Monday. It is the most popular search engine in Russia with a 62% market share.

The stock is down 35% since the Crimea crisis.

Analysts expect Yandex to grow 30%+ per year over the next 5 years.

If there are any tech savvy Russians here that think that Yandex will not be a much bigger company in 5 years please add in your thoughts.

I bought ERUS, a Russia ETF last week. It jumped up, but the possibility of Russia invading Ukraine and harsh sanctions after that spooked me and I sold. I made a few hundred dollars off it.

The Russian market is either a bargain right now, or a possible money hole. Depends on what Putin does.

This crisis is an opportunity for some people to sell "fear" yet again. As they did over Greece and Cyprus, and all the other big non-issues of recent years.

In case you guys haven't been following CNBC or the financials the last couple days, HFT, or High Frequency Trading has been getting a lot of press.

There was a terrific fight over it today live on the exchange:

A zero hedge diagnostic is here.

As much as I think the Zero Hedge guy enjoys people thinking he's a lot smarter than he is, he's probably not wrong about this one.

Anyone got an opinion on the UK FTSE 250?

With the Help to Buy scheme being extended until (at least) the end of the decade the index should continue to grow - it contains a number of UK building firms.

It's currently up 17% on this time last year.

Im about to sell out of my GLW position.

Buried deep into their recent quarter report, 25% of their earning are now due to currency hedges (yen mostly). I've been holding it, because I believed it was greatly undervalued, but its now reached a "fair-value" price. I'm up about 65% in 1 yr, but the stock is still climbing albeit at a lower pace

How do you guys play this situation? I think its full-valued, but the stock is still climbing.

DVY you held it long enough to qualify for capital gains taxation?

You could sell enough to recover your investment and ride it out for a while on the remaining shares.

@sam- IRA account. Non-factor, but it would make an interesting discussion if it was a regular account.

Well in that case, I would sell some and give yourself a nice bonus of 20% let's say and then ride the remainder if you think it still has legs. I know it is an overused expression, but play with the house's money and see how far you can get.

As long as you think it has some legs. Which based on your first post seems like there is.

Edit: As long as you don't have a better stock to put your money in.

If you think the stock is currently full-valued it makes sense to take profits, especially in a tax-free IRA account.

About the only other suggestion would be to sell the full position and roll a small amount of the profits into longer dated call options (if you expect the stock to go higher). That way you have locked in a profit and can still participate in any possible future appreciation.

I am switching brokerage accounts. E-trade has a bonus for switching IRA accounts (if you hit a minimum) + free trades. I am going do an account transfer from ameritrade (which costs 60 or 75 dollars), get a 200 dollar bonus + 60 days of free trades (from etrade).

Basically a free 175 dollars after all is done (I want to sell my GLW position, and add some stuff).

Just throwing the heads-up before the IRA deadlines hit! Apparently, it should take about 1 week to process transfers.

Hmm.. I have a little extra cash now, I think I'll invest in a few stocks and read some books on it this summer, just to dabble in it and learn about it before I really dive in.

The UK is booming right now. I'd say we're approaching the top of the current economic cycle, but it could have two more years of growth left. The FTSE could climb, but it's risky at these valuations.

Cracks are starting to appear (check the supermarket share prices like Tesco).

The housing market will likely crash and burn again, but in the long term prices will only be going in one direction (and it's not down).

RE: Stock Market 2014
I've been following a small reverse merger of a private company called APT. They've invented a carburetor that passes the CARB standards as well as a 2 stroke motor that doesn't burn oil.

The stock symbol is FROZ, a shell company of an e-commerce business that went bust. APT has some serious clout backing them. 2013 revenues were about $20 million. Expect a stock ticker change soon to represent the new company.

You can read up more on it here:

I switched my IRA from Etrade to TD Ameritrade about 18 months. It was a bad decision. Etrade was an antiquated interface and did not keep as accurate historical info as TD Ameritrade. Also, was tougher to sign up for DRIPs and trade options (covered calls and cash-secured puts). After 45 days I switched back to TD Ameritrade.

I've been following the Russia index and oil/gas companies in Russia. Its kind of blowing my money how cheap the stocks are to earnings.

Geopolitcal conflict and corruption has dropped Gazprom to 2.5 P/E and below book (if that really even exists for a corrupt oil/gas company). I am really itching to pick up shares of Gazprom and Rosneft. I can't see anyway I don't at least double my investment in the next 3-5 years.

Putin has put pressure for oil/gas companies to have dividends be 25% of earning. If this is true, dividend will reach anywhere between 7-12%.

Id stick to oil/gas majors in Russia. If you are going to go corrupt, go for the biggest corrupt companies w/largest state operations- GAZP and RSNFT. No quibbling over yield when all of them are basically free earnings if you back out assets even at a 50% discount.

Recently started a position in WisdomTree Emerging Markets Equity Income ETF (DEM). It is heavily weighted with Russian energy companies and Chinese banks, two of the most hated sectors right now.

Hey Bill, Yes Yandex is making a push into Turkey.

It's a really innovative company - for example they recently signed an agreement with Facebook which allows Yandex full access to content from the social network site's Russia-based users.

If you want to learn more about them read this : http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2013/11/13/y...e-barrier/

There is a fair bit of political risk with investing in this company so no one here should blindly follow my footsteps...

Thanks I am collecting data. Only if I feel shure I might put some minor money in there. I am still not invested in the stocks after I got burned after the 2001 crash. I wanted to invest in index fund but some also talk about a general crash. Some talk about China being a crash candidate.

Anyway, your right russia is a riskfull canditate and only for adventerous and informed guys.
