Always tough trading headline driven "noisy" markets....managing drawdowns equally as important as chasing alpha.

I don't think we fall as easily as earlier in the year though but there is the potential for a topping process to play out from what I'm seeing.

Ukraine is going to ahve the biggest direct influence (as it already has) on energy and gold, both of which will go up.

The impact mostly affects eurozone since ukraine has every pipeline from russia into the EU. Obviously if russia restricts oil, it will hamper the eurozone economy, which is already curmudgeonly slowly regaining pace.

But will it send US stocks signficantly lower? I think there has to be a far greater economic structural issue than a ukraine standoff to stop the current frothiness.

Russia is realizing its vision of regaining the "glory of the USSR". Georgia down, Ukraine in the making.

I wouldn't be the least bit suprised if Lithuania, Czechoslovkia, Kazahstan, Azherbajan, and other former soviet republics were next up.

I bought 20$ RSX March 22nd puts before the Olympics just basically gambling that something would happen. I figured they were about to expire worthless until Putin started this way. up 1000% today... Talk about dumb luck

Since the Russian market now has a PE of only around 4, Im considering buying RSX or TRF (the stock, not puts) now and holding for the next few years. Do you have any thoughts on that?

rsx rebounded quite nicely today. however, the situation i think is far from over and i think today's rebound was over-exuberance. Im going to keep an eye on this and maybe go long when it dips again

wheat, oil, and currency are ways to play the ukrainian conflict. especially, shorting the russian currency using the USD. by currency, i mean the USD/RUB. the RUB = russian ruble.

of course, USD/RUB is not the only way to short the RUB...you can also use Gold to short RUB by going long XAU/RUB....or use the CHF(swiss franc) to short the RUB by going long CHF/RUB. why? generally, usd, chf, and gold are used as a hedge against uncertainty, so, if a country is experiencing or mired in uncertainty, these three financial instruments(chf, usd, gold) can be used to short the country's currency. since russia is closely linked to ukraine in this case, that automatically put the russian ruble in the crosshairs.

Personally, if you havent taken a position any of this already about a month or two ago, i think it is too late in the game for that right now.

anyways, these are the sorts of event driven trade that i like.

What is of interest to me right now is the reports of freezing temperature and dearth of de-icing salt in northeast usa.

There are reports that HD, LOW, WM, WAL, etc were completely out of de-icing salt in the northeast of USA.

Hmmm...which makes me interested in the stocks of publicly companies that mined or synthesize these de-icing salts...i can imagine their earnings destroying expectations like crazy during earning seasons reports. I wont mind buying a few call options in them....if they have good balance sheets and solid price action....

Unfortunately, i am having trouble finding even a single publicly-trade company with snow-melting salts as a product. All the ones that i have found so far do not trade on any stock exchange. they are all private.

If anybody knows of such publicly traded companies that mine/synthesize de-icing salts, please, let me know.

Compass Minerals (CMP)--it is a diversified company and mines both potash (for ag) and salt for de-icing purposes. So it is not a pure play, but the only publicly traded company I know of.

I just checked on BBG and one of the only public traded company I see is K+S AG, a german company:

When I finish college and start making some money of my own I plan on investing primarily in vanguard index funds, namely health sector and energy.

See aaron clarey's comments on the stock market, I think he has some good insight. Long story short, boomer retirement funds are artificially inflating stock prices. So short the market before they start withdrawing from 401ks

Have you been in a JCPenny lately? I went in there a few weeks ago and I honestly don't see how they can compete. It felt like the Kmart of department stores.

I like JCP you can find a lot nicer stuff there than macys and dillards at a fraction of the cost, but its business is a mess. A lot of CEO changes to find the 'right one' to bring the right strategy. They got rid of the old Apple guy who killed its stock price, and im not so sure the new guy is doing such a hot turnaround job.

Plus, you have to look at the macroeconomic indicators in the US, which point to tons of people keeping on droppin out of the workforce, consumer spending down bigtime, basically the beginning of a downturn.
