Interview with a Cannibal, 2011

30 years ago, a Japanese man named Issei Sagawa walked to the Bois de Boulogne, a park on the outskirts of Paris, carrying two suitcases. The contents of those suitcases, to the lament of a nearby jogger, was the dismembered body of a fellow student – a Dutch woman named Renée Hartevelt, whom Sagawa had shot three days prior and had spent the days since eating various parts of her body.

He was soon arrested. According to reports, Issei uttered, "I killed her to eat her flesh," when they raided his home, whereupon they found bits of Renne still in his fridge.

Sagawa was declared insane and unfit for trial and was institutionalized in Paris. His incarceration was to be short, however, as the French public soon grew weary of their hard-earned francs going to support this evil woman-eater, and Issei was promptly deported. Herein followed a bizarre and seemingly too convenient set of legal loopholes and psychiatric reports that led doctors in Japan declaring him "sane, but evil."

On August 12, 1986, Sagawa checked himself out of Tokyo's Matsuzawa Psychiatric hospital, and has been a free man ever since.





The Dying Rooms, 1995

In 1978 a law was introduced in China which stated couples could only have one child, as a result of the dramatic increase in population. Couples could apply to have a second child if the first was a girl or had an illness but few were approved. Parents across China decided they needed to get rid of their female/disabled babies. A loophole was soon found in the law. It was illegal to kill your child directly (as in to stab or shoot them)but it was not illegal to kill them through neglect. 'Orphanages' were opened to cater to the new demand. Parents would take their children there, where the staff would leave the children in rooms to die of thirst or starvation. The film was produced over the course of two years. Kate Blewett, Brian Woods and Peter Woolrich all pretended to work in the orphanages that would be the focus of the film. They found evidence that very young children were deliberately neglected and allowed to die in agonizing ways. The three naturally became distressed, but nonetheless completed the film.





The Act of Killing, 2012

A documentary that challenges former Indonesian death squad leaders to reenact their real-life mass-killings in whichever cinematic genres they wish, including classic Hollywood crime scenarios and lavish musical numbers.

Bulgaria’s Abandoned Children, 2007

The Social Care Home - where 75 unwanted children are growing up - is the main employer in the small village of Mogilino. Few of the children can talk, not necessarily because they are unable but rather because no one has ever taught them how.

Kate meets the children in this tragic, silent world, such as Milan, the gentle giant who spends his days doing chores and watching over the others, and mildly autistic 18-year-old Didi, who is able to talk, and has plenty to say, but no one to speak to. The children that surround them suffer a variety of problems, many are blind or deaf and some are unable to leave their beds, many are literally wasting away.

Abandoned into the hands of the staff at Mogilino these children inhabit a bleak uncaring world, so devoid of normal everyday stimulus that many have taken to rocking slowly and constantly in their chairs just for something to do.

Bulgaria has more institutionalised mentally and physically disabled children than anywhere else in Europe. This film is a heart-rending and eye-opening look into the life of one such institution.





High on Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell, 1995

The documentary frames the lives of three addicts against this background; particularly their hopeless situations, while exploring them as human beings. The film reveals the lives behind addiction: their aspirations, why they do drugs and why they don't quit, etc. It interviews their families, friends, and members of the community, discussing how drugs have destroyed the lives of the addicts. Richard Farrell, one of the directors, writers, and producers, is a native Lowellian and a former addict; allowing the crew deep access to the city's drug scene





The Bridge, 2006

The Bridge is a 2006 documentary film by Eric Steel that tells the stories of a handful of individuals who committed suicide at the Golden Gate Bridge in 2004. The film was inspired by an article entitled "Jumpers," written by Tad Friend appearing in The New Yorker magazine in 2003.

The Bridge focuses on the large number of suicides that occur each year at the Golden Gate Bridge, capturing footage of the suicides and interviewing family members. Also interviewed are people who have attempted suicide at the bridge, witnesses of the suicides and a jump survivor.

The movie was shot with multiple cameras pointed at a notorious suicide spot on the bridge during 2004. It captured 19 people as they took their final plunge, and then offers interviews with grieving families.

102 Minutes That Changed America, 2008

The morning of September 11, 2001 is shown through multiple video cameras in New York City, from the moment the first WTC tower is hit until after both towers collapse.

The film depicts, in virtually real time, the New York-based events of the attacks primarily using raw footage from mostly amateur citizen journalists. The documentary is accompanied by an 18-minute documentary short called I-Witness to 9/11, which features interviews with nine firsthand eyewitnesses who captured the footage on camera.

I ended up watching the Bridge, the part that really struck me was the father with his son who survived. That's gotta be the worst feeling wondering if you leave for work today, your son might go try to end himself.

Seemed like some of them also brought it up so many times for attention that friends also became almost worn down about the subject.

Couldn't watch the dying rooms, made me too angry on a certain level and I wish a painful death on those who perpetrate it.

One thing I cannot stand in humans is cruelty to children, it flips a switch in my head from sane to murderous.

Watched the interview with a cannibal documentary.

What struck me is in the way he recalls the gruesome facts about the incident as if it were it were an everyday thing, i didmt sense a hint of repentment even though he says he does regret it. He clearly has problems and a some fucked up fetishes and what not.

Part 1 of the movie "ZOO." Released in 2007 and directed by Robert Devor, it is a documentary on the life and death of Kenneth Pinyan ("Mr. Hands"), who was killed in an accident involving sexual activity with horses. The movie also examines the lives of others who knew him, and participated in similar acts, along with the subject of zoosexuality as a whole.

From a raw numbers perspective this wasn't a huge terror attack (12 deaths) but when you dig into the full story it really sends a chill down your spine. The 5 people responsible for the act were all extremely well educated, yet somehow all bought into this insane hippy cult that promised superpowers to true believers. The cult itself had amassed a TON of wealth from donators (1 billion in assets), giving them the resources to pretty much destroy Tokyo (which they would have done had they not been raided by police just in time). And the big shocker that I never knew is that they (luckily) didn't prepare the sarin toxin properly which made it much less potent. Had it been properly mixed, the death toll would have been a hundred times greater.

Also it's just really unnerving knowing that an odourless, invisible gas could take your life away.
