Places That Don’t Exist

Simon Reeve travels to a group of unrecognized nations – countries so obscure they don’t officially exist.

On his journey he visits little-known parts of the world including Somaliland, Transniestria, Nagorno-Karabakh, Ajaria, South Ossetia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Somalia, Moldova, Taiwan, and the former Soviet republic of Georgia.

In this series, Simon Reeve is taught to fish by the President of Moldova, becomes an unofficial Somali diplomat, and finds himself crammed into a lift with the President of Georgia.

He visits a little-known country stuck in a Soviet-era time-warp, and a mountainous state which claims to have the highest rate of longevity on the planet.

He meets a villager who sold a kidney to buy a cow, and children forced to live in freezing railway carriages. Amid the minefields of Nagorno-Karabkh, Simon is pelted with snowballs by refugee children.

It was a deal that received worldwide attention. But when Miramax jumped ship and put the film in turnaround, Duffy's overnight success soon starts to crash and burn.

This is not just a fantastic story; the film is beautifully produced. You can't pull your eyes away from it, just like a burning building, simply because you cannot believe this is non-fiction.

Best documentary I've seen in awhile would have to be Searching for Sugar Man, its the story of a Detroit area musician named Rodriguez who almost became famous in the USA back in the 70s but his career never took off and he then lived a marginalized life for the following two decades. Unbeknownst to him he was famous in Apartheid era South Africa and his music was some what of an anthem for the anti-Apartheid struggles over there. Many South Africans, who in the time before the internet, didn't have access to any news about him, had assumed he was dead. Then post-Apartheid they realized he was alive and the guy went over to South Africa and did a tour and became somewhat famous again and rejuvenated his music career. would not say it was the best, but was damn interesting watching how people change and stay the same over time. Called The UP series....

The Up Series is a series of documentary films produced by Granada Television that have followed the lives of fourteen British children since 1964, when they were seven years old. So far the documentary has had eight episodes spanning 49 years (one episode every seven years) and the documentary has been broadcast on both ITV and BBC. In a 2005 Channel 4 programme, the series topped the list of The 50 Greatest Documentaries.

David Attenborough's nature films are among the best documentaries.

Aside from Life on Earth, you have the Living Planet, Trials of Life, Life in the Undergrowth, Life of Birds, Life of Mammals, the Private Life of Plants, Blue Planet, Life in the Freezer, Life in Cold Blood, Earth and more. If you watch these series you'll know more about the diversity and evolution of life than almost anyone outside of academia.

I'll second Searching for Sugarman. Very cool, and I love Sixto Rodriguez's music.

If you're into crime/drama, Paradise Lost (I, II, III) was absolutely insane. Its made by HBO, and they're spaced out about 5 years apart each. Basically three boys in West Memphis are murdered and they pin it on three teenagers. The trial was a joke and they serve many years of prison time (I won't spoil the rest, its in III). Many of the characters in the documentary themselves are batshit crazy and you think they may have done it.

I don't normally watch too many crime/police/law shows or documentaries, but I thought this one was really well done, especially the fact that they have weeks of footage and repeat interviews, not just a quick stop.

The contrast of the British host with the prisoners is used effectively, and it gets me wondering if he's just that ignorant, playing it up for the camera, or a bit of both.

There's also enough Red Pill material in there between gang hierarchies and dominance, how the female guards interact with prisoners, etc.

The best documentary I have ever seen is Mark of Cain (2000). It is about a Russian prison and the symbolism of russian prison tatoos. It is truly incredible.
