@ManAbout Depends really on where in Bkk you are. Some places are so flooded with farrangs that we are not anything special at all. But definitely don't be dressing like the typical Khaosan dipshit. Get your style up a little and see how that works. You will get used to the heat in a few weeks, by that I mean you will only be sweating through 2 shirts a day instead of 4. Where a bouts are you staying? I am very close to booking this flight especially with my Aeroplan miles far exceeding what I need to fly over there!

I've noticed that too. Get much more eye contact just about anywhere. I guess it's exactly because so there are so many tourists in Bangkok and they have a bad rep of being whoremongers, so ordinary girls go out of their way not to appear as 'bad girls' in public. That and the fact they are extremely subbtle. However, once you're preapproved in some sort of social setting, then you'll get eyefukked left and right.

I am staying one stop north of Sukhumvit. It's close, but still too far to walk to anything, specially in the heat and the taxi drivers are major dicks. Moving to a hotel right off Sukhumvit tonight.

With the exception of two buses full of red shirts that I saw go by, no indication of any political protests or shutdowns as of yet.

Make sure you don't stay in Nana area and not even Asoke, try to stay a little bit further down Sukhumvit, Thonglor, Ekamai, eve Phrom Phong is better and close by. For hotels check out this site,

Very nice, safe area. It's on Thonglor and its just a 5 or 10 baht motorcycle taxi ride or a 10 minute walk to the BTS. There is a Tops market across the street, 7-11 two minute walk away, and J Avenue is a nice place just close by. You are also only a few minutes from Funky Villa and the Thong lo bars. It's not luxury but the rooms are updated and clean with a plasma on the wall and good shower. I stayed here for a bit and a good ice breaker was laughing about the size of my hotel room with the girls I'd bring back (Small room with a king size bed makes it seem smaller). It's cheaper also with smaller rooms for about 700 Baht after tax and the nicer larger rooms for close to 1,000. It also has a nice free continental breakfast.

Another guy got shot at khao san road on the weekend and by now the first junctions are blocked again.
Tomorrow is the first day of a major shut down that will probably last atleast 2 weeks. Schools and Universities are closed, many street vendors will stay at home and lots of people will leave the town.
As the skytrain will still be running and you can just stay away from the protest zones and you will be fine. But it might get worse and even the scenario of a military coup is possible.

Sure, farang are nothing special in BKK that will make heads turn. I think the biggest factor is the culture. Girls are shy and not playful at all. Even if it happens that your eyes meet at a point then it is very likely that they will just look on the floor afterwards instead of smiling back. I have asked many girls out about this and they all told me that they do not do this kind of flirting and expect the man to approach them. If not, even if he was super hot, than it was just not meant to be.

Apart from this they might just be busy with their iphones or participating in some kind of sleepwalking and simply really just look trough you.

Thanks man, I have a place on Soi 33 right now. There are a few clubs on the road, but it seems like a clean, safe area. It is a few minutes walk to Phrom Pong. Will keep your suggestions in mind.

I opened a girl going into her condo yesterday, the big purple one attached to the Thonglor bts that starts at 40k a month. She spoke virtually no English. This is not my experience. Even including only the wealthy it's fairly hit or miss in my experience. I also know girls with masters degrees in English from Thammasat that can barely hold a conversation (but they can read highly technical books etc).

Props to you for learning Thai though, as having good Thai helped me so much. Even with girls that can speak English, it really helps to be able to participate in conversations with her group if you join her table or something. Otherwise you can be a bit of a hindrance to her at times.

I went there with some Thai friends a while back and the place was full of 16 to 18 year-old westerners. It seemed like it was their first time at a club or something because they were all acting like dumbasses and causing shit.

Not my kind of vibe, but I was there on new years so maybe that was part of the problem.

Meant to be busy on the weekends (after midnight), and very busy on special holidays. Xmas/songkran/Halloween. Known place to get drugs. Will have a good % of farangs given its location to soi 23.

Thai girls are not used to foreigners speaking thai. Therefore it happens quite often that they reply or try to reply in English. How good is your thai, especially your pronounciation? Often I met foreigners trying to speak thai - while I could understand, what they mean, the thai just looked at them with no clue whats going on. I always advise to get a private teacher, to work on pronounciation first-makes things easier to proceed from there.

Regarding bkk girls speaking english: You cant say that girls from more educated families always speak english. Many of them learned it at university, but they usually dont practice, as they dont hang around with foreigners. For example, a waitress from a sukhumvit restaurant might speak better english than a student, who studies in thai language only. Even Business, in many universities, is taught in thai.

Most girls working in banks ( considered as good jobs in thailand) cant speak english. For my study, I did an internship in BKK couple years ago. Although the company did lots of business with Europe, most of the employees - thai language only. Maybe bank and shop assistants, office girls, waitresses dont come from the top 5% families in BKK - I never refused them though In addition, this target group is definately interested in foreigners and will lead to bangs in both quality and quantity. Between the two extremes, which you mentioned, high class and food stall girls, there is a lot in between. Normal thai girls, cute, fun, down to earth, representing the majority of girls in bkk - furthermore you will be able to practice your thai with them. I am not saying you should hit on farm or bar girls, but why you choose your girls based on their families education and status? Well, with some effort you will be able to score occasionally, but IMO you limit yourself for no reason.

85%~ Thai girls English cant speak english and as a rough appox the other 10% would be allocated something like this:

2< % can speak to a very good level just like us - usually university educated ones who have traveled overseas.
4-6% of girls can speak to an okay level - these would be the ones working in tourist areas/malls and hotels
2-4% who can just about hold a basic conversation, assuming you speak slow enough and wipe out your accent.

As farangs we only get a small selection of Thai girls open too us, and of this selection, a lot of them will have some grasp of the English language. Hence why they are talking too us or in area were franags frequent. I mean go to RCA and you may even have 50%+ of girls who can speak english. Now head to Ractacda and the club Zleng (or whatever its called), less than 10%< of girls can speak English.



Point being don't skew your thought process into thinking "oh a lot of girls I speak to can speak English or decent", you think that because we as farangs mostly spend our time in the tourist areas. Most air conned resturants will also try and hire one employee who speaks english, in case western customers come in. Most speak some type of Tinglish as I explained in my blog.

Walk into on nut, phar kahnong or some area which doesnt cater to Farangs, approach 1000 girls and speak English. I would say with less than 5% you would be able to have a conversation past a basic level.
