I've been offered a teaching job in east coast of China. One that's only on a tourist visa which makes me anxious as hell to accept. I know that it is illegal, and morally I don't want to take it. But the opportunity is genuinely intriguing.

What can I (British national) do on a tourist visa and how can I transfer it to a work visa in the future? I do not have a degree. I have spoken with a few Chinese nationals that I know and they've all said that loads of foreign people are working in China illegally and that no one seems to care.

Visa issue is my biggest sticking point with accepting the 12 month role.

I'm in China (working on a legit visa). DO NOT work here illegally - they will throw you to the wolves.

To teach in China you MUST have a degree. That is the rule.

I got offered a month long job during the vacation time between semesters but then my employer found out I would be working for another organisation and they went crazy.

And get new Chinese friends - Chinese nationals DON'T care about you. In as much as they DON'T CARE what happens to you when you get found out .

As to everything else...

Been coming to China for 10 years and it's got a lot worse. The internet restrictions have got worse than ever. It's extremely dangerous to walk anywhere due to the e-bike menace. Teaching is a joke - I'm so afraid of saying anything negative that I just talk about stuffed animals and purile shit. If you think Western kids are entitled - in China the kids only like to hear positive stuff about anything.

It's also more difficult to send money back home.

It's lonely and isolating here. There's a deep suspicion of everyone. I've tried to move away from teaching and into something better suited to my previous career. But everyone kind of assumes I'm a spy.

I felt such a relief in the Summer when I left and partied like crazy in Thailand for a couple of weeks.

If I could get a better salary teaching in Thailand then that's where I would go. As it is the best option is to wait for Vietnam to develop a bit more.

I was planning on using it as a foot in the door and do sales later on. I have strong suspicion it is the best place for long term money making as their economy appears to be on track to overtake the USA both in terms of size and average wealth amongst citizens. Wealth I want to have.

Seeings as you've expressed difficulty moving away from teaching it appears thats it's unfortunately a deadend job. What other ways can I work there without having a degree or is the lack of degree make the entire country shut off?
