The thing that characterizes hipsters more than anything else is the cult of irony and understatement.

Some of that is part of the passive aggressiveness that men express in an extended peacetime. A major war will blow that away, whenever it comes.

They're hell but I don't think they're particularly weak, actually. I sense that a lot of the males have a little bit of nasty backbone. These dudes are fanatically conformist like any "counterculture" but they're not necessarily insecure.

One of the things that's characteristic of hipsters is the fact that a lot of the time, they're not dressing a certain way or maintaining their hair styles and facial hair to look good. They're doing it to be ironic.

Yet if you point that out, they'll frown at you and act sniffy.

But, like I said a lot of these types come from wealthier families and can afford to dick around for most of adulthood.

Last but not least, fuck PBR, I get it if you're on a tight budget, but it's fucking lame how hipsters worship that beer and drinking it is like one of the core tenants of their life philosophy. PBR sucks relative to good beer, and most of these types can afford to drink Stella Artois or something half decent, but yet you only seeing them drink PBR, it's part of their groupthink conformist mentality. There is one movie made by Tim and Eric, was never really familiar with them, but it's about a hipster douchebag and his friends living in Williamsburg, it's called "The Comedy" and I actually thought it was pretty funny. The whole movie is just a collection of scenes of this guy, and it's really slow, but a dry and off beat form of comedy, the guy just acts like a total hipster douche and is a condescending asshole to people, but it's pretty funny.

Whatever it is those guys are doing works for them. Maybe it's an aloof attitude that they are giving off, maybe they signaling status to those girls in some way.

Clearly there is game at work. If anything, it could be a good idea to figure out what they are doing.

They were more in-line with the punk-rock and indie rock suburban ennui vibe. Less punk-rock though. The girls were kind of hippysh art school types I guess.

Now these guys get called hipsters.

I think guys on here look at me and say I'm a hipster because they don't have people like me where they are. I'm an NYC kid (not anymore I'm 33) who did art stuff instead of sports. I don't listen to hipster music. I grew up listening to Van Halen, avant garde stuff, and NIN. I hate indie rock.

I don't mind the influx of new people into the city because when I was growing up here, it was a lot more cut-throat and you couldn't walk around late at night in some areas unless you wanted to get jumped.

I got tired of a lot native NYgirls, and like to have some new-blood pussy from middle America coming to my door step.

They come to NYC to meet me. I am part of the dream of NYC to a lot of these girls.

Good post soup, I grew up in London and other big cities and so my experience is pretty similar to yours, and I agree with everything that you said. Myself, I was never really part of one sub culture, but had an interest in many, and the rave scene and the drugs brought us all together anyway.

Another thing is that the snarky, passive aggressive, know it all, personalities that a lot of these so called hipsters have, are not limited to them and are pretty much the norm for young men and women today. It might be more of a generational thing than a hipster thing.

And regarding some of them getting women, it's easy to see why. Some are passionate about their lifestyle choices, living a life without constraints, and aren't afraid to stand out from the crowd. Pretty much a recipe for getting pussy.

The guy talking about working out and martial arts makes a lot of reasonable points, but ultimately doesn't sound all that different to the nice guys that think they deserve pussy because they are nice and hold down a steady job. Hypergamy doesn't care.

You can't say with a strait face PBR is good. It tastes like mob water, shit is really nasty. PBR, Molson Stock, Ale, Bud are all shit. Old E and highlife are what they are and serve that job with a specific flavour.

I said that out of the cheap beers it's the best one. I remember when I started seeing it around in NYC. It was cheap so we tried it and it was much better than Ballantine and not as toxic as steel reserve.

I used to drink old e almost exclusively but there came a time when I had to stop because I think I was getting too fucked up on those cheap 40oz bottles. Ii believe they put some extra shit in there like caffeine or something.

Yuengling, despite being too malty tasting at times, is the next level up price wise. Then you start getting into the seemingly countless new brands of beers that have sprung up in the last ten years, and there are almost too many options. I'm spoiled and almost never have to buy drinks because I'm getting hooked up a lot, so when I do buy beers at a bar, I tend to go for cheap stuff.

Most hipsters I know don't have family wealth, many work as baristas or waitresses etc. They mostly come from middle to upper middle class families though. I have met quite a few self hating hipsters, who dislike the cynical, urbane, self satisfied, petty pretention of it all.

Even though I do not resonate with hipster culture in general, I often find myself associating with people who display the marks of that culture. That being said, it is hard to escape if you are interested in stuff like art and interesting music - as this hipsterism is often just the background culture at hand in day and age. So I do not really take it too seriously.

Sub-cultures are a double edged sword, there are some great people with identify with them, but then again, it is never the masses who just adopt the uniform and conformist "style" I find myself associating with anyway, but individuals who are actually sincere human beings and not nihlistic cardboard cut outs representing the dead of western civilisation.

At the risk of sounding "meta," they weren't artists or musicians per se, but would hang around artists and musicians hoping the trappings of coolness would rub off on them.
