SOMM - Documentary Film
For the wine nuts out there, you've got to watch this.

I'm a guy in the wine industry so it probably resonated with me more than it would a layman. Some comments on the youtube preview suggest it seems pitiful to dedicate your life and risk relationships over something so "trivial", but I suppose everyone needs to find their own passion and wine might just be mine... i'm not sure yet if i'm as dedicated as the guys in this film.

From a sort of "Game" perspective - 3 of the main characters have partners and it was interesting to see them being supportive of their men but also voicing their frustrations. It made me see a bit more that some women really want to support their men, rather have them pick between one or the other. I know if some bitch told me to choose wine or her, i'd go with wine anytime - at least it gets better with age.

Feel free to PM me for wine advice or other stuff

Cool. I've really been wanting to see this movie. I really gave some serious thought to getting into the wine industry earlier this year when visiting a friend in Napa who is studying to become a somm. It's actually an idea I've flirted with for a long time.

One of the things that held me back is that sentiment of there being a bit of triviality involved in that life choice; at the same time, your duty in life becomes to show other a good time, and there is a type of honor in that, in my honest opinion. Not to mention I assume I could still find meaning in life through writing books.

Anyhow, if you're involved in the industry and have done some groundwork, it would be awesome to see you bust out a data sheet for the lifestyle forum. And I'm sure there are other young guys on here who have an interest in it as a career path as well.

Obviously, it's a career wrought with it's own share of complicated advantages and disadvantages, just like anything else, but fascinating nonetheless.

I just watched this movie and liked it very much. Anything that takes this much effort and is so hard to achieve is worth fighting for if you really want it. Only 197 in the world...I wonder how many are still alive?

I remember to watch "Mondovino" a few years ago. Liked it.

I kinda dropped into this industry, was not a very formal process. More detail here - I Hate Sales

From what I've observed the general pattern seems to be guys working in restaurants to pay their way through tertiary education, and if it's a high end restaurant they'll have pricey wines on rotation all the time. There are always patrons who don't finish their wines, which gives the potential wine student a chance to try them. From there it's up to you - do you love wine enough to pursue this as a career?
