RE: How to get a job as a python (or any other language) developer
Good news guys, I've got a potential Java developer interview, on an email yesterday they want to go things further with me after applying a couple of days before. I've been sent an aptitude test and I believe once I pass I'll be informed of an interview.

I've also been doing some JQuery, Node, Angular JS projects from Treehouse.

You only need 5/6 solid projects to get into programmer, developer interviews as well as list other skills on your CV/Resume: (JavaScript, Angular, SQL, NoSQL, OO, TDD, Git). For Java, 2 android apps(as well as 4 other projects) will help.

How long have you been coding?

RE: How to get a job as a python (or any other language) developer
As stated in my last post,

You can use the JavaScript, Java, C# projects from Treehouse as your own projects.

Some good project ideas are: simulation of a game, an EPOS system(Youtube this), mobile apps(android/ios), management system(warehouse, inventory)-there are some great examples from Youtube & websites (plenty of resources online how to develop different types of websites). That's all you need.

And 5 to 6 projects in total is enough to get into junior programmer/developer interviews as well as list other skills on your CV/Resume: (JavaScript, Node, Angular, SQL, NoSQL, OO, TDD, JSP, Linux, Git).

Landed another government job. Supposed to be doing python development. 4 days in and there's been nothing to do, besides attend meetings and read through code repos. Making over £2200 a week. I'd strongly reccomend guys get into contract work for your governments, slow work rate, good pay, and looks good on the CV.

@Swodier Hang on tight and best of lucks.

I have being following the Odin projects and I find it very useful. I'm half way done and I feel competent already.

On the side, I'm learning the ionicframework for mobile app development. I have many ideas that need to be brought to life.

What job sites are you using aside from Upwork?

I need a webapp or windows app that makes bulk amazon accounts with proxy/VPN (and a few other simple things), but upwork keeps blocking my request because it goes against their TOS.

You should look into react native, for cross platform mobile development

Ok, so here's an update.

I've got a solid grasp of the fundamentals of HTML/CSS. I'm confident in my skills to recreate any web page so long as it doesn't require any complex user interaction (i.e., anything involving JavaScript/jQuery). MDN's web developer guides and Stackoverflow has been a great help so far.

I've decided to forgo this Udemy course, however. It's not challenging at all. The lectures consist of an explanation of a concept, then a code along with the instructor. Honestly, everything that I've learned so far has been due to my own effort. What I do is look at websites that I like, view its source code to get an idea of how it's coded, and attempt to recreate it myself. I'll probably order a book on HTML/CSS to help fill in any missing gaps since I prefer reading over watching videos. Creating my own designs over at http://www.csszengarden.com/ has also been a great help. I highly recommend checking that site out if you're new to CSS or just want to brush up on your CSS skills.

Now I'm moving on to JavaScript/jQuery. My goal is to become proficient in JavaScript by the end of February, learn a stack, and build projects to add to my portfolio. Hopefully by the end of 2017 I'll have learned enough to begin interviewing for jobs.

I'll keep you guys updated.

Do you guys have any experience finding location independent jobs in this field as junior programers?

I ignored this field a few years ago thinking I wouldn't be able to compete with the Indian workforce but maybe I was wrong to do so.

RE: How to get a job as a python (or any other language) developer
Been following this thread since it's inception and great inspiring story FC. I was at family's and had a break for a while and reread the entire thing.

I've been honing my coding skills for a while now and a week back decided to make a strong commitment to get into the game. Let's just say 2017 is going to be very very busy year.

Anyway, reading through the thread I saw some concerns about getting into this field. They were similar to concerns I had before making a commitment so I wanted to post my thoughts on them.

1) Bootcamp students flooding the market. I looked at a lot of bootcamps and I don't completely trust their quality. I don't care how intelligent you are, after just 6 months there is no way you are good at programming if you had no prior experience. Programming is a life-long journey of learning. Maybe everybody and their grandmother claiming to be a web developer these days, but the cream rises to the top and I bet finding a good one is hard, hence why companies pay so much.

2) Having to constantly learn. I have that mindset anyway so it's fine for me, but I believe that people who trouble learning new things related to what they do usually have a poor foundation. The basic/fundamental skills simply don't change in any skill. With the basics down pat, learning new things shouldn't be hard. For me the crossover and logic going between languages was very similar, each one being easier than the previous.

3) Outsourcing or having to compete with foreign talent. This is a possibility of course, but in the US I see Trump and his administration having some effect on this. It may be a trickling effect that takes a while, but we're in much better hands now.

4) Low prestige/lower pay vs Drs/Lawyers/etc. Possibly true, but think of the risk reward ratio. They have to go school for years, and have tons of debt. The cost to learn programming is much smaller. However this isn't an argument saying that the barrier of entry is less here. Coding is pretty difficult, and in my opinion requires a certain mindset that many simply do not possess. I can sit there and try to debug for hours without getting frustrated. How many people do you guys know that get frustrated over every little thing? Think they can code long term? No way. The mental aspect and focusing skills that are required weed out many people.

5) Coworkers who are SJWs. This is honestly my only legitimate concern. However, I really want to freelance and the up a coming generation is waking up. Plus I'm sure there are jobs in uncucked states if I want to go that route.

I think this is a great field to get into for guys on RVF. Especially for the possibility to work remotely and the pay. I think it's literally impossible to not be able to pull an extra 20-30k a year freelancing using this skillset, or much much more working full time as frenchcorporation is demonstrating.

If you already have some knowledge of programming:

The Treehouse techdegree's and Udacity's nanodegree's are a good way to get into the field with the full stack Java, JavaScript or full stack web developer course. You will learn step by step on how to complete several high quality projects which you can use as your portfolio when applying for jobs.

This guy gives you an overview on how he got his first programmer/developer job and provides you with his GitHub portfolio: http://learnwithjeff.com/blog/2012/0...an-six-months/

Yep, most of your concerns are things to think about. But if you are good, you are good.
See my previous posts on this thread. Coding is great, but if you learn additional skills that go well with coding, then you kill it.

1) Yep, 6 months is short. But if you keep doing it, at some point something clicks and it seems second nature. It becomes as intuitive as speaking your own language, and learning new languages is trivial.

2) Yes, if you don't love it enough to be excited to learn new skills, your life will suck.

3) Look at the bright side, you can be the one living in a cheap place (EE, SEA, SA) and stealing jobs from others.

4) It all depends on how you present/sell yourself, and your CV. A good looking, social, charismatic guy who codes (not the nerdy guy) won't have less prestige than a crappy lawyer. If you freelance, just say you are a technical consultant. Why do you care about prestige anyways? If your lifestyle rocks, people will respect you more than a loser with a prestigious job.

5) All jobs are like this nowadays. At least with coding, you can consult and be your own man. Actually I never worked purely on software in the corporate world, but for other kinds of engineering (electronics and systems stuff) it was actually not SJW at all (very few girls in the whole building, and those girls smart enough to be engineers where smart enough to be red pill).

On a related note, how much are you guys charging nowadays for freelance coding? I did some python freelancing while studying. Now I have a full time job I'm happy with and it's somehow related to coding (mix of electronics design/embedded safety critical software/ FPGA signal processing). But I would like to do some freelance on the side during my free time, not for the cash but rather to keep my Python skills sharp.

Dev is fine until like 40-50+ when they start rejecting you because of your age (Source: http://stackoverflow.com/research/develo...rofile-age ). Cubicle work sucks. Go into medicine for the job security + status + prestige + high income in a low cost of living area. Harder to get in but you get permanent security. Lots of cush fields too or work for the government. Also – look into military route via HPSP scholarship to go to medical school for free and even get some money during it.

I learned the basics of Java from the Head First Java book. It is about Java 5, but the features that were added in the later versions are very easy to pick up once you understand the core, which is in my opinion very well taught in the book.

Having that knowledge I finished the "Learn Java" track on Treehouse. It might be a bit redundant but I think it's helpful to see the basics from yet another perspective and it taught me a lot of new things, too. Then I finished all the other Java modules they got on there.

My recommendation for you is to read through Head First Java and do it's exercises, then finish the "Learn Java" track and then do the "Beginner Android" and "Intermediate Android" track. Then you can see if you are still missing something and go from there.

I finished the Web Design, Front End Web Development and Full Stack JavaScript tracks, too, because those topics interested me and are wanted by employers.

I think the 25$/month are very well spent on the Treehouse learning material.

Best Regards,
No Habit

I've been doing something similar.

My stance that I have repeated over is that a dev should not be grunt developing past a certain age. If you made it to 50 years old and somehow are still a junior dev, you've been doing it wrong. You move up or out.

Same, and I know there are a lot of people who do to. Sadly, JavaScript is possibly going to be the language "of the future". At least regarding web development. Therefore is necessary to learn it and at least be able to code with it.

So if I'm 25 the it's probably not a good place to enter right? I mean, I only have about 10 years left before being discriminated against my age.

Fuck, I remember when I discovered RVF and was 21. How time flies by.....

I don't see how we would do client side stuff without JS. Yeah JS is a pain but the trend is towards more not less JS for better or worse. Buckle up, buttercup.

@Cattle Rustler: 25 is nothing. You have plenty of time to get in. Just remember you move up or out eventually.

10 years is enough time in this field, you can stop working after that if play your cards right.
Also the age discrimination is a lot lower if you go contracting, in fact I'd say i havent seen any (In the UK at least). The average age (not including me) is usually well past 35

I'm in my mid-to-late 20s & I'm consistently the youngest person in teams full of contractors, by usually at least 5 years

Some of my fellow coding bootcamp graduates in their late 20's and early 30's have already landed 50k to 60k jobs here in Austin, which is about the average for entry level devs here.

At 25, you'd be young, go for it.

Even at 45, man, you can work remote and who will even know what you really look like? Just post a profile picture on linkedin that takes a decade off. Make sure to be in the best shape you can be and have a great portfolio. By the time you get to the skype interview, your portfolio will have spoken for you and age won't be a determining factor anymore.

I've applied for graduate Java developer job which having looked at my CV, they emailed me stating they want to take things further with me.

They also asked me to fill out what university I went to and what grades I've got.

I'm still completing my CS degree part time.

To get into junior Java interviews:

Writing Android mobile apps will attract more attention when applying for Java jobs. Android is Java centric and the advantage of this is an employer can download and test the apps straight away on their mobiles device to form an opinion about your skill.
