Thank you for the advice Sir. I will put in the work and report back.

If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.

Learncodethehardway.org says something about upgrading to Windows 7, do I need to worry about this website being out of date?

Growth Over Everything Else.

No, you don't.

Just stick with whatever course you chose and dedicate time to it regularly.

RE: How to get a job as a python (or any other language) developer
I've started a proper company. Im already technically self employed, but only a contractor.

Basically I've gone down the digital agency route, that rvf poster LouieG started a thread about: /thread-29744.html

I did post in that thread ages ago, but I wasnt ready. I've been doing side work for people for long enough now, that turning it into a legit thing makes sense now.

I know other programmers/design/photoshop/music/video guys outside of work, whose work I can already vouch for, that is going to make this easier than if I started before. For the record my current income is still £6k-7k a month, from the last time I posted

I've been busy this year by other people's standards, but not my own. I've been travelling a lot and messing around this year so far up to a few weeks back . I have kinda plateaued somewhat as a result (though i did make business contacts whilst partying), but I've gone back into recluse mode now.

So sick. Looking forward to hearing how you go with that. I'm running a similar biz model, with a different non-technical service. I've been knee-deep in it for a while now and spent a lot of time cracking the "getting customers" puzzle. Pm me if you need any marketing/sales help, particularly email marketing and copywriting. That LouieG thread is gold for other marketing channels and tactics.

Congratulations FrenchCorporation, this is fantastic news. I wish you the best for your new company.

@ No Habit,

If their isn't many Python jobs available, learn C#, Java, C++ their are lots of resources online to do this: Youtube, TutorialPoint, Treehouse, Stackoverflow, Google it. Then create a portfolio of projects together as FC as stated. Learning Javascript, JQuery, AngularJS, MySQL will boost your CV.

Here in the UK, 80% of programmer, developer, junior C#, Java, C++ jobs don't require a degree at all, so out of 10 jobs available, only 2 of those jobs will ask you for a Computer Science/Engineering degree.

Good luck man!

RE: How to get a job as a python (or any other language) developer
I have a 1st-round job interview tomorrow, at somewhere I've been rejected from twice.
The funny thing is that I didn't apply either time, they approached me. The first two times were for python roles, this upcoming one is for scala. At this point I think they are just fucking with me. I've never been approached and then rejected from anywhere else before, let alone twice.

If anyone has any insight as to why a company would do this, please feel free to chime in

How far did you get before? How large is the organization?

It's not uncommon to have several well qualified applicants for any given job and the hiring manager just have to pick someone. Could also be some disconnect between the internal recruiters and the hiring managers. I wouldn't sweat it, but you might want to pay attention to how well organized the company is when you go in for your interview. Two things to keep in mind, nobody in the company is thinking as much about your job hunting process as you are and the interview should be a two way street.

RE: How to get a job as a python (or any other language) developer
I am slightly late to the conversation......

2 things to never skip out on as a developer.

1. Dont limit yourself to just python. For example, A C++ with Perl developer will make more money even though it would seem like an odd combination. Spread your wings and learn other languages as well.
2. Get to know SQL and NoSQL really well. I was offered a job as a developer over another because I had that experience (at the time SQL) and the alternative did not. The "in thing" is NoSQL such as MongoDB, OrientDB, and Cassandra.

Good luck to all who jump in to the STEM arena.

Can't imagine who would bring on a dev if they didn't know DB in some way. I can understand if the individual was purely front end but these days 1 is almost required to be full stack.

I got to the final round. Theres usually only two, a phone interview and then a face-to-face one
They have over 25,000 employees according to wikipedia

You'd be surprised how many developers dont know DB...at least in the industries i have worked in. Even now some of those guys think its magic beans. Its why the industry pays 200K to an "entry-level data scientist".

A bit skeptical about 200k for entry level data scientists. Maybe the absolute creme-de-la-creme PhDs.

But in general data scientist = maths or stats grad who can code, pretty much?

That salary seems insanely high, just looking at what Im seeing in Europe, but I know US salaries for tech do go alot higher.

Data scientists require a Ph.D.

Data analysts and miners get paid less.

Apparently no PhD necessarily needed:
https://www.quora.com/Do-I-need-a-Master...-scientist

Data science salaries:
https://www.quora.com/How-much-do-data-s...s-get-paid

Looks like its 80-130k. As expected.

It's looking like ~200k is only likely after several years in industry and in a management role of a data science group.

I'm still working at the same place as before, nothing's changed there

As for the proper company I've sarted, ive decided to focus on Web apps, mobile apps, graphic design/photoshop stuff, and videography/video editing stuff.

I have friends/know people who do all these things, but I decided that If I'm going to get them involved, I better know the ropes on as much of this other stuff as possible.

So I've made some digital art pieces and some icons using adobe photoshop and illustrator.

I learnt to make an android app, and Will be making one to accompany a web app I'm going to start making

As for the video editing stuff, I already know how to do that so I havent spent any time on that

I've made a company website, with a "coming soon" landing page. I've created the homepage, but at the moment I'm collecting all the work thats going to be shown on it to start with, so it's not visible yet

Ive got web apps done, I'm going to refresh the visual design for one of them though. Ive got graphic design stuff done, and I've got some video stuff done. I have an android app done, but it doesnt do much, so I'm going to make a more useful android app before I showcase that on the site

What I'm currently looking at is the best way to show them on the site. I've found a good example on another companies site, where their work is arranged by project/case study, and the page takes the reader through the entire process, to show them the care/attention to detail, that is put into their work.

I've just got a couple more icons/logos to create then I'm going to get started on that final step , and copy the layout i saw

A friend who does similar stuff has put me onto some online avenues of getting work. When my website is done I'll pursue those methods, and I will also use some of the methods desribed in the "digital project management" thread that's on this forum.

^ Awesome man.

I'm doing a related digital service. Personally I found it very useful to niche down the offer and specialize. That way you really build momentum and efficiency, both with your production and your marketing. Similar projects, similar clients. Going deep, not wide.

Don't worry too much about portfolio. It's easy to get sidetracked and spend months tweaking the website... but the real meat of the business is in the marketing. I've made sales without people even visiting my site, but it's all about getting your marketing communications bang on, and flipping those switches that make people want to buy from you.

Could you possibly break down further how are you making some of your sales without the clients checking out the site?

I have some ideas, but it'd be good to hear some ones that have already proven successful

Easy stuff is going to get more automated, I've only worked on web apps with complex backend functionality, so I'll be fine for the next few years at least

RE: How to get a job as a python (or any other language) developer
Awesome stuff french, I did a ruby on rails bootcamp a bit over a year ago after not really knowing where I wanted to go in life. I had a little of bit of background in programming from education/previous job but nothing serious. I now work as a full stack (ruby backend) dev and do some contracting on the side when I can. Being a dev is a very mentally satisfying job. I work remotely so sometimes it gets a bit lonely, but I've stopped traveling the past few months to save up some money and am moving to a more lively part of town with some nearby coworking spaces.

Great job on starting your own company! An agency is probably the safest way to make money as a new company - there will always be businesses who need apps built for them. Have you looked into React Native for mobile apps? Biggest benefit is develop once in JS and push to both iOS and Android. A few caveats of course - like iOS doesn't have Android's elevation api, RN doesn't have shadow styling for Android, etc. Definitely have to write a little bit platform specific code, but still is a really cool technology. I've been tinkering around with it and it's pretty damn cool.
