Also when is the best time to look for a place, I figure winter would be high season so I need to get a place before Nov at the latest.

I would go for either Brickell or the northern part of Miami Beach - like 40th street or anywhere north of that. Much quieter, close to South Beach, some nice buildings on the ocean - and cheaper than South Beach a tad (except maybe Bal Harbour).

Best time to buy is now if its a foreclosure or short sale. Can get bank financing on some of these, but some of the buildings you cannot because so many people in the building are not paying condo maintenance. For example, can get in the Roney Palace on 23rd (last building in South Beach) on the ocean which is basically a 5 star building tied in with the Gansevoort hotel in the $100ks for a 600-760 sq ft studio. However maintenance on a studio is $600 a month (includes AC, cable, etc.) and you have to buy with cash - banks won't finance in that building. Unbelievable deals in Miami right now. I owned 5 condos in South Beach and a real estate company for 5 years. PM me if you need help.

Alright, gonna give ya'll a quick update of Miami. Some things I said before may not be accurate to what I believe now. I'm gonna start by saying I totally agree with bluewater with living in north Miami Beach, especially if you have a car. Very nice area. Plus you have little Brazil and Buenos Aires right there. I would recommend around 70th street. The only places I would live in MIA are one the beach, Brickell, or MAYBE Coconut Grove/ Coral gables area. All those areas though are pretty expensive. If you are going for budget you can find MUCH cheaper places in midtown and around that area. Just be prepared to drive to do anything worth while (Though design district does have some cool things going on every once in a while and midtown isn't too far from Brickel or the Beach).

Having connections or being rich is key in Miami. If you don't have money or connections, life is gonna kinda suck for you. It will take you a while to establish connections, and you may not even establish many. I luckily knew some pretty high up people before I even moved here, but really didn't get connected until about 6-8 months after living in MIA. Clubs are extremely expensive. I ordered two vodka pineapples yesterday, it was $32. If you want a water at a club, they won't give you a cup of water, they'll charge you $10 for a bottle. There are some cheaper options like Bardot, Vegabond, Grand Central, etc. But still plan on probably paying probably a little more than you would pay in the city you live in, somewhere around $10-12 for a mixed drink.

I personally prefer hanging out in Miami over the beach. I have pretty sick connections on both though. Pretty much free entrance to any of the clubs and some even free drinks all night. The Beach is extremely expensive and pretentious at times. I just wrote this in another post, but I'll write it again. The beach is full of bottles whores. I can't tell you how many times I've seen dudes buy a bottle(s) and their table was flocked with women. an hour later after the bottle(s) are gone, so are the women, and the homies are sitting there with their dick in their hands wondering what happened. I'm gonna give you a little advice though from smart men I've seen. If you have a bottle, make sure you're doing in pouring. Pour the girls those weak ass girly shots that are 2/3 cranberry and pineapple and 1/3 vodka. Try and make the bottle last until the end of the night. Good spots on the beach are;
Mondays: Mokkai, Tantra, and I'm missing one, can't think of it at the moment.
Tuesdays: Louis, Florida room @ the Delano, Sushi Samba (I recommend going to the others first and then sushi samba late night), and my friend throws an event that's usually at the W called French Fridays, its pretty good.
Wed: Everyone says Manions, but I hate Mansion, the Wall @ the W is good.
Thurs: Louis or Mynt
Fri: Pretty much anywhere nice. SET is nice. The Wall, Louis, Arkadia, LIV, Mokkai, Mynt. Just keep in mind though, these spots are gonna be a little hard to get into or real expensive if you are a guy. Ideally try and get a big group of girls with just one guy friend, but isn't that always the goal?
Sat: Same thing, pretty much anything on the weekends is good.

Miami is much more laid back and still has super quality girls, and imo more authentic latina girls. I may be biased because I'm super hooked up there, but it's awesome, highly recommend it), and Space just to name a few. I know a lot of people are gonna hate on space because yeah, you do have to be able to put up with idiots rolling their faces off, and if you don't like house music it's gonna be tough to handle. But I tell you what, you'll find more bad bitches there than any of the upscale clubs in MIA, and those girls WILL APPROACH YOU! I'm telling you, space is fucking awesome for picking up. Always so many smokin hot girls and they are easyyyyy. Just be careful because a lot of the times the girls will be with dudes and space can be sketchy.

All this info is just my opinion though. The reader and I may have totally different ideas on what good nightlife is.

I'll cover some good restaurants for ya'll on the beach...
Two of my favorite spots are La Locanda and Boteco Copacabana.. La Locanda is excellent especially for the price, and super mom and pop. It's the same quality as Hosteria Romana on Espanola at half the price.
Boteco Copacabana is pretty good brazilian food. Obviously it doesn't compare to the real thing, but portions are hefty and at a reasonable cost. You'll get a nice picanha for about $17.

Just last night I was with a friend and some of his friends. All night his friends were talking about how bad their girls were. How Regi Bush was trying to pick up his girl and she dissed him. But I was the only one talking to women. In between talking to a girl while I was getting a shot one came up and asked, "Did you get her number?" I responded, "No, my goal isn't to get her number, my goal is to fuck her. Besides she's from out of the country, probably doesn't have a phone here." Unfortunately I took too long to go to the bathroom and get a shot, but the time I went back the girl was gone.

MIA is a cool place, but it takes a while to get used to. If you don't have good social skills and you aren't good at making friends, stay away from this place. But if you're personable and have a lot of friends where you're at, MIA might just be a great place for you. Check it out. Oh and I might add, if you work in the service industry, you will probably be quit surprised at the nice pay increase you'll be receiving, unless you live in a place like Las Vegas or New York, but still may be along the same pay scale. Even working non tip jobs like front desk at a hotel, you should be making hefty commission checks if you work at a nicer hotel with good reviews on tripadvisor. The slow season can kill you though, but fortunately it only lasts about three months. I have a basic job at a hotel, but I baaaank (At least for what I was used to before and being 25 with no college degree). I'll have $400 days some days. Plus I love my job, beautiful women coming in and out all the time! So many percs!

I pay $560 (Everything included + internet) 2 short blocks from the beach and 5 blocks to South Beach, but I live in a small place with a roomate. I hope to move out sooner than later. Most hotels you gotta apply online, but it doesn't hurt to go in and introduce yourself. I know that when I was looking 10 months ago both the Lowes and W. had certain days and times you could go in for interviews or to fill out apps in person. I know at the W. you had to fill out an app. online first. At Lowes I'm pretty positive the days were Tues. & Thurs. 12-3 pm. I'll give you some recommendations on hotels that you could make lots of money at... But first have you worked at hotels before? Some of the nicer hotels can be real tough to get into, and trust me, if you haven't worked in hotels before you are gonna fail the interview miserably. I'd try applying at either Lowes, W, possibly Setai (Though not sure, there was an article in the paper about how they treated their employees terribly, but it seemed they were mostly the foreign employees who work in the restaurants), Gansevort, Mondreon, Dream, Clevelander, RED, Hotel Victor, Z ocean, Fountainbleu, Delano, The Ritz, Surfcomber, The National, Shoreclub, Soho House, Edden Rock, and in Miami, Intercontinental, Viceroy, Epic, Manderine Oriental. Just check out tripadvisor and look at hotels with good ratings, you'll make the most at those spots. Little tip, bellmen, bar backs, bartenders, and servers make a killing at good spots.

Now is pretty much a great time to look for jobs on SoBe, the season is just about to pick up and They'll be looking for new employees. How long you been down here? You liking it? It's about to get a lot more packed and crazy down here in the next couple months. Should be interesting. I didn't know many people this time of year last year, can't wait to see how it pans out. I havent worked in a hotel before. Mainly restaurants.

Im actually in Boca Raton crashing on a friends till I find a job and a room to rent. Just got here 2 days ago. Havent been to Miami yet. Boca Raton appears to be mad expensive and filled with rich people. Havent been out to any clubs yet.

You said North Miami is a good spot?

I need to make atleast 1500 a month to justify staying in south florida as I will need to be able to save some coin for Colombia in July.

Got ya. Boca's far my dude. You should definitely be applying online and give a full couple days (maybe 4-6) to devote to come down here and meet in person and fill out apps in person. I don't know how it goes for restaurants, but I'm assuming the nice ones, apply on line. You can kill at some restaurants. Our restaurant isn't even nice (But it is extremely popular and we have a real good flow during the season), and some waitresses pull over $700 a night. A huge plus about south beach too is most places add gratuity to all bills, even if it's just a water, and it's usually 18%. So you can be a prick and still make mad tips lol. But here's the thing, I'm sure this is true in a lot of restaurants..... A) It can take a while to move up. You might have to stick it out a couple months and make shit for money until you can move up to where you're pulling $700-1000 a week possibly more. But luckily for you the season is about to pick up, and some parts of the season, it doesn't matter where your section is your gonna make bank. B) You'll have slow nights and good nights, but eventually they should even themselves out to you making a whole lot of money. Maybe two or three nights a week you only make $50-70, but then two of the nights you make $3-400. I'm sure you already know this though. Apply at the spots I recommended to eat with an exception of the whole in the wall spots. There are tons of great restaurants down here.

No, I wasn't saying North Miami is a good spot, I'm saying North Miami Beach.

And the $1500 a month idea... You're gonna want to set that bar a little higher if you plan on going out much and living around the beach or brickel area. It shouldn't be hard to make $1500 a month though. I spend a good 2-3k a month out here I'd have to say. But I also probably spend at least $200 going out every weekend.

How would you recommend the application process?

Like which are the best jobs to have in a hotel and when I apply in person who do you ask to speak to? The hotel manager?

Also should I put down my college degree in human resource management, might be over qualified for most jobs....

Hotel jobs, if you aren't looking to make it your career, anything that tips. Bellman is a great job at the higher end hotels, same with concierge and certain guest service jobs. Bellman is pretty basic entry level job too. You should ask to speak to either hotel manager or supervisor. A lot of times neither will be available, in that case just offer a resume and ask politely if they'd pass it on to their manager. It helps to have a cover letter, as I'm sure you know since you have a degree in human resource management.

And I would definitely not hesitate to put down your degree. I'm sure there are lots of people with degrees working at hotels and restaurants because they may make better money in that field than they would the degree they majored in.

A lot of the bigger hotels you're just gonna have to apply online, its kinda shitty but I've gotten lots of calls back, but ironically many of them have been months after I'd applied and already had a good job set up. The Ritz has a good process though, they ask you questions to see if you would be a good candidate. Don't know if that would be your best bet though since you haven't worked in hotels. I got a call back a couple days after filling the the application at the ritz. A lot of the botique hotels though, it shouldn't be too hard to at least speak with a supervisor. Some of those hotels you'll make just as good money as you would at the giants like the W and Fountainbleu.

Another thing I want to add about gaming in MIA is get yourself a nice wardrobe. I never really cared about fashion anywhere else as much as a do here. People dress real nice. You don't wanna look like a scrub. If you have to, hit up Marshalls, they have crazy good deals on designer stuff.

You'll find fake people wherever you go, some places more than others, and yes Miami has a large amount of "fake" people. But there are good peeps, they're just harder to come by than some other places. And I know plenty of middle class people that aren't wanna be thugs. I mentioned in some thread some time ago about considering moving to Miami depending on how my business goes. I've decided to join a full-fledged consulting firm this month based in Chicago, but with offices in virtually every major US city. Their South Florida presence is through an office in Coral Gables, which I might consider at some point, but I'm more interested in working in one of their international offices (Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, London, etc). My practice group won't put me there now but as I grow I'll be able to capitalize and join the emerging markets division, etc. Pretty excited, but I'm putting business interests first, and I'd like to slide my way into Asia because that's where the future lies.

For example, you can get an absolutely amazing apartment with one roommate in SB for 3000. In DC speak, 1500 a month is standard, and the place you get is wayyyyyyy nicer.

"Rich" is such a subjective term. If you're making six-figures in that shit economy down there I'd certainly think you are better off than most but who knows. Bottle service is great because of how many girls come over but its also a grand waste of money. $30 for a bottle of kettle one before going out vs. $150-$400 just because you're inside a club.

Miami isn't rich because of its economy (few good jobs there), but because A LOT of rich people live there. These are wealthy people who often come from money or earned it and decided to live there. These people, especially wealthy retirees, are responsible for the high cost of living in Miami. That's why stuff costs so much down there.

South Beach (and the rest of Miami Beach) is straight high end on an international level.

I said it before and I'll say it again. Miami is the joke of all Florida. The buzzkill and deal killer. Any time the word comes up in Conversation it ends. We just look at eachother like aww fuck no! Or Fuck that! Everything was good until that word comes into the deal.

The place is a total retarded Spanish clusterfuck. You want to come to Florida and think well Miami, hells yes! But navigating the place to live is a nightmare.

This is how you do it. Move to Florida. Not Miami. Set up camp and then go there to check it out. I will bet anything you after a few hours you'll be like What the Fuck? Sure there's some small areas with good looking people walking around but also tons of bullshit to deal with.

True . I never been to Miami , but I did knew a handful of chicks whose family had property in Miami back in college here in Sao Paulo.
It was their "beach house" .

Ha. A couple weeks ago a couple Goose tonics (for me) when I was passing through LIV, cost me $34, plus whatever I tipped. Blowing a dub for a drink, not my usual steeze, and I'm not haggling drink prices at a nightclub bar, when you go out on the Beach here, you have to spend some bread somehow.
