I don't think so - it takes a while to turn a team around. ESPN was talking about how tanehill is growing as a QB. Not every team has a solid team to build around. And your defense is pretty solid - ya I get it they lost to the JETS but fuck everyone loses.

RE: NFL thread
It's official. Schwartz is gone in Detroit, and so is Greg Schiano and GM Mark Dominik in Tampa. Schiano is another guy that tried to come in hardcore and change the culture overnight, but went about it in a way that created more turmoil. He had a potential stud in Josh Freeman, but didn't put the right coaches and tools around him. Then the leaks about Freeman being in the NFL Drug Program (not for PEDS, but ADHD meds) hurt him in the locker room, even if he wasn't personally responsible. The shit he pulled with having his defense go hard on teams kneeling down at the end of the game didn't win him much respect from his coaching brethren either. All of those things are well and good if it translates to wins. If the losing continues, your players stop listening and won't go hard for you.

How many coaches is that?

What about the Dallas head coach? Personally, I think Jones needs to stop meddling and they need to get rid of Romo.

NFL is trigger happy with coaches and is turning into soccer with the revolving door of coaches. Tampa was stupid for sacking Schiano. The team was playing hard for them. All the NFL is doing is keeping old good coaches away like Chower and Gruden whom say a big "fuck you" to thirsty owners whom cave to tweets from obsessed fans whom never go to games. You get more security in college also, coaches would be dumb to jump into that fire pit.

Schwartz had 5 years and started flopping, he deserved the axe, but Schiano was doing good things with that shitty team, nobody can win when you got bums like that. The Browns guy had what a year and some? You can't get a system ad consistency with being trigger happy like that. It's one of the trends in the game that is puss in me off. I come from the camp and cloth of the Steelers whom ride or die with their coaches. Give them the freedom to develop and build something. All these teams that got happy with the trigger will never win anything in the next 5-8 years.

Kubiak (Houston) was let go in-season, Chudzinski (Browns) got it yesterday, and now Frazier (Minnesota), Schiano (Tampa) and Schwartz (Lions) today, so that's 5 total. There probably won't be so many firings this year, because there were 8 last season I think. Chudzinski was the only coach that only got one season before getting fired. I don't think Jerry is going to make a move on Jason Garrett. He's been nothing but supportive publicly, and he loves the guy. He'll keep making changes around him instead. If they go another season without making the playoffs, he's going to have to make a move. Granted, the problem is the owner in the first place, so until he decides to take a few steps back, sign checks, and let football people make certain decisions, they'll continue to struggle. I don't know that any coach can truly flourish with him constantly in the way.

RE: NFL thread
Schiano was kind of in over his head. He had seemingly lost the respect of the players and drew the ire of the league with the whole Giants fiasco when he instructed his team to rush the line of scrimmage when the Giants were clearly in the V formation. This is on top of the fact that he handled the Josh Freeman horribly and had an abysmal start to the season.

It's surprising how he even got an NFL gig when he was a mediocre coach in a mediocre conference when he was in college. At the end of the day, there's plenty of dysfunctional locker rooms but you better win if that's the case. Schiano was 11-21 though and that's not going to get it done.

Quick triggers on coaches speaks to management, no doubt. When you pull the plug quickly on a coach, that means you're admitting you didn't hire the right guy in the first place. I always look at the Steelers as the model of stability. They've only had 3 coaches in their history, and have never fired a guy. Never. They don't fire them because they're sure about the guy they hired. They don't panic during down years, because they understand circumstances sometimes add up to not making the playoffs. But every coach they've hired has brought a Lombardi back to the facility, and each has gotten to the big game more than once. They have an organizational philosophy, and they bring in guys that fit that culture. Part of the problem with most organizations is that they don't know what they are, or what they want to be. They keep making changes, so they're always in a state of flux. Continually changing personnel and philosophies keeps you mediocre. You have to give something a chance to take hold. That starts with making the right decision at the beginning, and throwing your support and resources behind it.

Perfect summery of the Steeler way. You look at successful franchises and there is a "way" they do things and a culture around the team that is perpetuated year after year. The a Steelers are about stability and it transfers onto the field as they have always stressed the run and a solid D with success coming when they can find a QB whom can control the ball well and still be able to sling it.

Patriots are ruthless with a set system to win. They will give anybody on the street a job to play if they think you can help them win but will dump your ass the next week also.

The Seahawks are clearly building a philosophy right now with Carroll whom is he'll bent in showing everybody whom doubted he could ever win again in the NFL wrong.

The Packers have a similar patient approach.

The BUNGALS also with Lewis whom could of been canned in many situations so far. For them it's hard to shove away your only successful coach in the teams history so you let him keep on. Divisional banner once again and a legit shot to make into the second round, slow moves, but moves forward nonetheless.

All these teams understand you can't win overnight. Building up a team is a 3 year process at least. For the most popular sport in America why are they afraid so much of their low IQ fans? In this day and age nobody in the NFL is going to have 10,000 people at a game. Even shitty ass Tampa and Jacksonville sill had people in the seats and TV gives you enough money that there is no need to be so wreak less with patience towards your team.

But your right it is management. How the hell is Ireland still in Miami? You take your time to bring in good people and it's ride or die for at least 3 full years.

Without overdoing the 49ers, but to show how important a coach is - Harbaugh almost took the 9ers to the superbowl his first year. The talent was there but the previous coaches couldn't get the players to play.

TB has talent and Freeman is a good QB - but poor leadership just destroyed the team. TBH, I am afraid the window for the 49ers isn't big - not because they are not stocked or have a ton of picks, just that in the NFC West - all teams have talent and good coaches. The Rams could possibly win another division - and they are getting the Redksins 1st this year - fuck me.

Isn't Freeman with the Vikings now?

It would be cool to see the Seahawks in the Super Bowl, even if they are a bit cocky.

Patriots are ruthless and cold blooded, for that reason I don't like them or Brady.

After seeing a documentary on the manning family, I kinda of like Peyton now. It would be cool to see him at the big dance again, Eli is crap though and so are the Giants.

I fully expect my Chargers to lose against the Bungals.

I agree with all this 100%. You could see how Tomlin kept the system going this year even when they were 0-4 and in a bit of turmoil - he just manned up and didn't panic. The system is in place and they ended up having a half-decent year even if they did not make the playoffs.

Garrett needs to go - as they were saying on ESPN today if you keep him you're just accepting mediocrity in Dallas. Trouble is, with Jones as the owner you'll need a super strong and experienced coach to stand up to him and do things the coach's way. Not sure who is really out there that could do it.

I'm not sure I understand the Chudzinski firing. After only one year? The Browns were competitive in a lot of games this year. Schiano I can understand given how he seemed to lose the team early in the season and the apparently poor management of the Josh Freeman drama.

Will Lovie Smith be coming back this year?)) Honestly, that guy got a bit of a raw deal in Chicago and would be a decent fit at a lot of places just to stabilize things.

RE: NFL thread
I think another important point regarding the Steelers is that they didn't necessarily go with the "hot assistant" at the time. They went with younger men that didn't have head coaching experience previously, instead of recycling coaches that didn't get it done in other places, but had "experience." San Francisco, under the DeBartolos with Walsh as head coach had a great run because Walsh established a way of doing things. Seifert followed the same script when he came in.

The Jimmie Johnson Cowboys were great because Jimmie ran shit. He had personnel authority, and knew the kind of team he wanted to build. Jerry couldn't handle it, and basically insulted him to his face at a function, telling people within earshot of Johnson that it was the ORGANIZATION, and that any coach could win there. So Jimmie walked. Switzer was smart enough not to get in the way, and those same players went to a NFC title game, then won another Super Bowl the next year. Once Jimmie's players retired, that was the end of the success. Parcells got them to the playoffs (and it was the first of Romo's now inevitable clutch mistakes, a dropped snap against Seattle, that was the final nail in Parcells' decision to walk away. The rest of the nails were attributed to working for Jerry Jones), but since leaving the Giants, Parcells simply won't stay anywhere to finish what he started.

The current Giants team is smart to stick with Coughlin. He had his rough patches early on with some of his petty rules, and had to fight off a mutiny from the players. He learned to soften in some areas, and learned to actually care about his players as men. They showed their appreciation by going on a couple of great Super Bowl runs for him. They had a terrible year, but stability is more important. He still has his players' ears, and they play hard for him.

There's plenty of disagreement out there, but I think the Jets were also smart to stay with Rex Ryan. I personally like Rex, and he also learned from some mistakes of the past couple of years after getting off to a great start. You actually need a boisterous guy like him to deal with the NY media, and a lot of the talking he does is to take the heat off his players, and build them up. It can backfire, but I'd rather have a guy that puts the goals out on the table, and wants his players to strive for that. A couple of years he talked big when he didn't actually have the personnel, and he admitted to being humbled and dialed it down. But I know inside the facility he still talks big. The Jets never had an identity - Rex gave them one. His players respect and love playing for him. You can be a player's coach without being a doormat. I believe a foundation in defense is most important - a team needs a foundation in toughness. Rex is an outstanding defensive coach, and gets the most out of his personnel on that side of the ball. He doesn't have great personnel right now, but actually had a competent defense. Mike Tannenbaum was a joke as a GM, which was why they let HIM go and kept Rex after last season. They brought in a more competent offensive staff this year, and have a promising young QB. Handling QBs isn't Rex's strength, but they, and he, made some strides this year. They greatly overachieved at 8-8 this year, and Rex is a major reason for that. It was wise to stay with him - the constant change in regimes has to stop. Granted, they need to build on what they did this year and come in over .500 next year, but Rex warrants the chance to do that.

I believe Lovie Smith got the first interview for the Texans' job not long after Kubiak was fired during the season. At some point he'll get back into the league.

I heard Rex really pushed for the Sheldon Richardson pick knowing that it would beef up the dline and it would be the centerpiece for his defense. Aside from all the talk he does - he has a great defensive mind. And I think Geno will work out. Bye Sanchez...

NFL should be alarmed that three of four playoff games, including Green Bay's home game, still not sold out

Obviously there is no chance that these playoff games will be blacked out to local television markets, but it's interesting that playoff games aren't yet sold out. Is this unusual for midweek before wildcard weekend? Maybe it's just the timing of the holiday?

It's because Americans are broke. Sports is entertainment, and now with spiraling costs a luxury entertainment option for peoples and families budgets. I've written on this for school that sports attendance can be a gauge to show local and economies are performing. If somebody has to cut back on things like movies and restaurants then sports would have be cut back as well. The NFL does not help letting it's teams spike up tickets either. Don't worry though the NFL would never let the visual of empty seas in the playoffs appear. They will I've out hose tickets for free or do a buy-back deal with the teams.

The double whammy of holiday shopping on the Visa and know playoff football is to much. I glanced at a stat that shows that a large majority of Americans used debt to shop this holiday season. And something like 80% of Americans did almost all their shopping during the barn-burner sale days like Black Friday.

The Fiesta Bowl wasn't sold out either even with a Texas school not to far away for travel.

RE: NFL thread
Wild card weekend predictions?

KC @ IND: Indy wins. If Indy can put up points, Alex Smith will not be able to rally the Chiefs on the road.
NO @ PHI: Eagles win. Too cold in Philly for the dome team, and the Saints D will get shredded.
SD @ CIN: Bengals win, but it will be close. Chargers barely squeaked by a Chiefs team that was resting many of its starters for much of the game. Time to face reality.
SF @ GB: Pack wins. I think Niners are the better team, but check the weather forecast - Packers have a massive home field advantage in that frozen tundra. I'm looking for a a number of Niner turnovers; holding onto that rock in freezing temps ain't easy.

Most likely road team to win: Chiefs. Just have to avoid falling behind early. Also Chargers are a crafty team that has beaten a number of good teams and have a decent chance against the Bengals, who might wilt under the spotlight of a big game.

I agree on Indy, I think NO wins more experience, Bengals, and I think the Niners will win.

Yes, weather will be absolute crap in GB. But GB defense is hurting and Crabtree is now back. But I do think we will see plenty of slipping and sliding 50 yard TD runs or catches. Sort of like that Philly game in the snow.

Chiefs defense has been struggling as of late. Let's see if they can pull it together. A. Smith has won in a shootout before against NO a couple of years ago, so we will see. Gonna be a fun weekend. I'll probably drop some cheapass bets on the games (talking cheap).

Pack won't have much of a Home Field advantage. Their offense was built for artificial turf. See their last Super Bowl run. All playoff games were on turf.

Eddie Lacy is their only hope.

^What the Pack needs is for the Niners to start Chris Conte at safety so receivers will be open all day.

Bad luck Chiefs, lost JC a few min into their first playoff game.

It is a tough break. I did bet on Indy but you hope that it is a clean (no excuses) game.

Also, fuck all the Alex Smith haters, he is a good QB. Ya, he isn't a peyton or brady, but give him some decent talent around him and he can ball.

Also, I just realized that being on the defense for a PAT or FG is a depressing thing - once in a rare while you might block a FG or the guy misses but PATs are automatic...sort of sucks.
