Make no mistake about it, whether Alpha or Beta, Froch is a badass and if you step in the ring with him you better be well-prepared.

Read more at: http://nesn.com/2013/06/report-floyd-may...nals/Floyd Mayweather Jr. may have more invested in Monday night’s Heat-Pacers game than any of the players who will actually be on the court playing. That’s because Mayweather bet $5.9 million on the Heat to cover, according to Vegas Gambling Steam. The line was at -7 when Mayweather laid down the bet. So not only is the undefeated boxer looking for Miami to win, but he’s looking for them to win big. The Heat are returning home after dropping Game 6 in Indiana. Miami has lost two home games during the 2013 postseason. Of course, what’s $5.9 million to a boxer projected to earn $90 million in 2013? Well, still a ton of money.

I guess Mayweather hit that bet.

That has to be the dumbest bet I have ever heard of. He won $600,000 by winning, if the heat didn't cover the spread, then he would have lost 6M dollars. Dude has to have rocks in his head to make that bet. I thought the heat would win at home, but the numbers are just not in his favor.

^ That's why they call it gambling. Floyd is actually an avid sports gambler - and from what I understand, he wins far more than he loses.

Yeah, if he loses he loses a lot of money, but then again, he isn't betting what he can't afford to lose. Look at what he makes per fight! He isn't the typical fighter that will go broke shortly after retiring. He's not getting ripped off during his career like most fighters. My only concern would be if he continues this kind of gambling when he's no longer fighting and collecting huge purses.

Mayweather-Alvarez breaks records

Two months before Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez square off to unify their junior middleweight titles in the year's biggest fight, records are already falling.

The fight won't take place until Sept. 14 (Showtime PPV) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, but already it has broken the all-time live gate record for a boxing event after selling out on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after tickets went on sale.

Golden Boy Promotions chief executive Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com the fight will generate a minimum of $18,647,000 in ticket sales and "it could go up to a little shy of $19 million depending on the number of comps that are given out. It's going to be the record. The MGM is calculating and has to do the ticket settlement, but it will definitely be the record."

When Mayweather outpointed Oscar De La Hoya in 2007 to win a junior middleweight title at the MGM Grand, the fight, also promoted by Golden Boy, broke every boxing revenue record, including the all-time pay-per-view mark with nearly 2.5 million units sold and the all-time gate record of $18,419,200. That gate record surpassed the previous record of $16,860,300 by the 1999 heavyweight champion rematch between Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield.

Schaefer said the reason the exact gate figure for tickets ranging from $350 to $2,000 apiece is unclear is because the number of complimentary tickets have not been fully calculated.

"Everything is gigantic with this fight," Schaefer said from Atlanta, where he was Thursday for stop No. 5 on an 11-city media tour to promote the fight. "Two months out and you can say within 2 percent what the gate is. The more comps, the less the gross will be but the casino gets a certain number of comps, the fighters get a certain number of comps, Showtime and Showtime Pay-Per-View get some, the sponsors get some. I have to go through the list. The gate number will go up from where we are at now and it's already the record. I don't want to have too many comps."

Said Mayweather: "This sellout doesn't surprise me because this is what happens when the best fights the best. I want to thank all the fans for their support. They're going to see a hell of a show on Sept. 14."

Schaefer said the fight also has set the record for a guarantee on national closed circuit revenue, which is derived from people who pay to watch the fight at bars and restaurants. He said De La Hoya-Mayweather generated a record $3 million guarantee and that the Mayweather-Alvarez closed-circuit rights went for $4 million.

Although Schaefer declined to disclose the exact figure, he said the Mexican television rights for Mayweather-Alvarez that went to Televisa brought "four times as much as they did for De La Hoya-Mayweather. That just shows you how big Canelo is in Mexico."

"These lofty records, you have to wonder if they will ever be broken. I am always hopeful because records are here to be broken," said Schaefer, who will be in Miami for stop No. 6 on the media tour. "The gate record has fallen. The closed-circuit record has fallen for the guarantee. I'm really proud of what we have accomplished as a company to set the record and then break the record. I'm going to try to break it again. That's what motivates me. It shows how healthy the sport is."

So now the question is can the fight challenge the pay-per-view record?

"I'm not going to say the pay-per-view record is going to fall but the more I see the turnout at these tour stops and the passion I have seen day after day from the fans, the more I think we have a shot," he said.

At a tour stop in Mexico City in front of 32,000 fans:

"Mayweather loves Mexico," he told the mass of humanity gathered in the dry sun. "I've faced a lot of great champions in my career and the toughest fighters was the Mexicans."

I couldnt get tickets. I thought the promoters were playing games but now I realize it would be hard. I have officallygven up.

I already got my room reserved for the Luxer though and three days off before the 14th. The decision is should I go to Vegas anyway and watch the fight at a viewing, drive to Monterrey and watch the fight, go to DR and watch the fight there or try to do a five day Rio trip and hope I can find the fight.

Kinda leaning towards Monterrey or DR. If anybody has a plug for some 350 tickets please PM me. Willing to pay 500 for them. Appreciate it.

The cycle of disrespect can start with just an appetizer.

I'm so happy there a few boxing nuts on the forum. I think Mayweather will win, and I can't see him losing before he retires. In a way, as annoying as I sometimes find him, I want him to retire undefeated. Then I can say "I was around in the era of Floyd Mayweather".

On a British note, there's another fight I'm looking forward to in September, but more for the circus surrounding it. Haye v Tyson Fury. With a name like a Street Fighter character you'd expect him to be amazing, unfortunately, he isn't!

Mayweather by unanimous decision, eight rounds to four. No knockdowns. Alvarez has a chance in this one, but if he doesn't do some serious damage in the first three rounds, the rounds Mayweather spends figuring the other fighter out, he is pretty much screwed. Also, I was pleased to see that the judge who (incorrectly) had De La Hoya winning the fight with Mayweather is no longer scoring fights.

I think that is a pretty accurate assessment, and I can see that happening for sure.

Yeah, the blueprint is there to beat May; rough him up early, foul him, go to the body. All easier said than done. If May starts pot shotting him and tying him up and sticking his elbow in his eye socket on the inside in round 4, it will be a long night for Canelo.

I always think it is interesting when you see the two guys in the ring together and you can see who is bigger. A lot of times it is really hard to make a call before that moment.

Here are some press conference photos:

Canelo looks big, but May almost looks bigger.

Crazy.

What do you guys think about the co-feature Lucas Matthysse vs. Danny Garcia? I think it can really go either way. If Garcia can stay on his feet for six whole rounds, he has a really good chance of winning either by a decision or by a late-round knockout.

I think the next step for Mayweather after September 14 is either a rematch with Alvarez or a fight with the winner of the Matthysse/Garcia fight.

Austin Trout beat Canelo in my eyes, and Mayweather is much better than Trout. I think Mayweather at -270 is a safe bet, but I'm hoping for more late money on Canelo from the Mexicans to knocks that line down to -250.

The best fight of the night though is Matthysse vs Garcia. I know Matthysse is a heavy favorite, but if Danny Garcia can take some of his shots there's a chance that Matthysse will get fucked out of another decision.

I'm placing my bet Friday morning, the day before the fight. I'm fairly confident that if I shop around I can find -250 odds or even better somewhere. In the past, I have seen the Riviera have odds favorable to the non-Mexican fighter. I have a feeling Gold Coast may be good too.

Or maybe we can hope a fight with the winner of Brandon Rios VS Pacman.

Or Mayweather vs Canelo: Sergio Martinez wants the winner (although I guess that has a ton of hurdles to happen).

With the current feud between Golden Boy and HBO and the fact that Top Rank fighters such as Pacquiao only fight on HBO, I seriously doubt that such a fight could happen. We can always hope though.

I'm just watching this, it's three parts in, but use your browser to go back. Utterly fascinating. Shame Nigel Benn wasn't around the table. For my money, a prime v prime tournament - RJJ takes everyone out.

Perhaps I should start a boxing thread like I did with soccer.

Has anyone been to a Mayweather fight after party before? There is a party with Diddy scheduled at Palms on Saturday after the fight. The few pictures I was able to find of previous after fight parties looked pretty bad and make me think that there is point in going to the party.

The judges for the Mayweather/Alvarez fight will be Dave Moretti, C.J. Ross, and Craig Metcalfe. Dave Moretti is a good judge. I've never seen a bad decision from him. I know nothing about Metcalfe other than that he is from Canada. The problem here may lie with C.J. Ross. She is one of the two judges who had Timothy Bradley winning the Manny Pacquiao fight. In my opinion, having her judge this fight increases the chances that something unfair will happen. Kenny Bayless is the referee. No problem there as far as I'm concerned, although I would prefer Steve Smoger. Smoger seems to stick to the east coast and other countries.
