American hate while traveling
Have you ever experienced it or is it just stupid stereotypes that you can laugh off? Do you ever get tired of people talking shit about America even if you don't love the country? I was laughing when Roosh wrote about it in Denmark. They would talk shit all day but didn't know what to do when he threw it back in their face about their country because nobody had ever done it before.

The first video is real interesting. Keep this thread civil, I don't want anyone getting banned.

RE: American hate while traveling
What I find is that many people don't understand how big the US is. The US is a large country with a whole spectrum of different people. Someone in Portland will think and act differently than a Cajun in the bayou of Louisiana.

Plus hate on America is a dumb thing, the US has contributed greatly to our advancement over the pat 2/3 centuries. Unwarranted hate

RE: American hate while traveling
I used to be reflexively opposed to anti-Americanism, but there's so much about the country that is ugly, rotten, or sick nowadays that I won't bother to defend it any more. Plus, some reading leads me to believe the great faults of America are not new either.

Also, you will find that anti-Americanism need not be confined to the left. Sure, most of these people are probably blind haters, but some have a point. If one is intellectually honest, it is very easy to build a case against America based on traditionalist or conservative principles - America is a leading promoter of vulgarity, promiscuity, homosexuality, feminism, gender equality, obesity, sheer ugliness, crappy unnatural foods, multiculturalism, bone-headed foreign intervention, the works.

If you're cool though, most people don't hate on you for being American. Some Danes are passive aggressive pricks who will try and start shit, and then back off and accuse you of overreacting. Denmark is the world capital of passive aggressiveness, and they are proud of it - they celebrate the fact that they frowned when the Nazis occupied them.

The most "hate" I got was in Denmark, mostly political, but I also got tons of love too.

Saying you're American is a huge DHV in Eastern Europe, especially if you go against the fat and ignorant stereotype.

Most love for being American:
Sweden
Romania
Brazil (I have a feeling this is going down)

Least love:
Iceland
Denmark
Latvia

RE: American hate while traveling
Most of the America hate I hear is from Americans, it's all abstractions and coffee house bullshit.

American 1 is not American 2 is not American 3. The patterns people see may match some but they in no way close their minds to all.

I've noticed that when you are a genuine human being with your shit together and a bold person then it is next to fucking impossible to put a label on you that will stick.

I'm not an American, I'm The American.

P.S Ammericans aren't even Americans to "Latin" Americans. Los EEUU aint America to like a billion people.

That billion people doesn't include HEEY-RABS.

I'm just making a point on the nature of words and labels.

What the fuck is America, anyway?

As a half-dane, your experience of attitudes towards America between Sweden and Denmark really stunned me. I had simply assumed that it was universal across Scandinavia, though I realize that my interaction with Swedes and Norwegians was limited and self-selected (Swedes and Norwegians living in Denmark, DC, or Toronto-Occupied-Ontario with only brief visits to Sweden).

I found most people are able to differentiate politics from individual people. If you are cool, most won't have any hate for you.

RE: American hate while traveling
I got some hate from a guy running the local doener kebab stand in Germany because his home town got the ever loving shit bombed out of it back in Iraq.

I didn't really know what to tell him.

The most amount of hate I got were from a few scattered dipshits with some very misconstrued political notions about how America is or how it's run.

When you put aside the gag reflex to anti-Americanism, you will tend to have your eyes opened to views you never thought of. Some of those views you may actually agree with.

Yeah, the whole "Americans means anyone from the Western Hemisphere" nonsense is lame. It is usually put forward by Asperger types who can't comprehend that a word may not carry its most literal meaning or by anti-Americans who want to complain about what Americans call themselves.

And I was taught that "americano" was the Spanish word for someone from the United States. It may be that my Spanish teacher lied and Latin Americans use a different term but I doubt it. My Spanish is too basic to use regularly but when I've described myself as "americano" people seemed to understand what I meant.

I remember I was once on a double decker bus in Edinburgh, and this white couple sitting across from me had the Canadian Maple Leaf sewn into all of their bags, and they were wearing "proud to be Canadian" type of clothing. My first thought was "these Canucks are doing their damndest to make sure nobody mistakes them for Americans! Hosers."

RE: American hate while traveling
I used to get a little defensive about anti-americanism. Ninety percent of it that you hear is thinly veiled criticism that they want you to take personally, some ass has an axe to grind and wants to take out their aggression on some tourists who should have no interest acting as the personal tackling dummy for these passive aggressors. It makes me more angry to hear a foreigner go off on a tangent about how shitty America is and the American in question actually agrees with them in the hopes that this guy buggers off, because then this foreigner just unloads all of his unresolved issues when we should be drinking, making merry, and being friendly to one another.

One night I was out drinking and I heard from a fellow American something along these lines, "You guys are getting mad as hell about America but you've never been there, and we have no idea who you are, where you live, what your politics are or how they work, and it wouldn't matter if we did or didn't. You're not just mad that we're assholes, you're mad that our news clogs up your media because we're relevant everywhere and you aren't."
Everybody was shocked. I had a laugh. It's not the best way to shut down these continuously whining negative nancys but it worked in this situation.
Ricky Raw has this phenomenon nailed and I recommend everybody read it.

RE: American hate while traveling
I've had no problems in Asia with anti-Americanism (they generally seem to just look at foreigners v. non-foreigners rather than having strong opinions of individual nationalities).

Europe is a different story. On the continent, generally no problem. You have the same shrill far left types you have in the US but I'd say you are less likely to meet them in a social setting in Europe than in the US.

The only people I've met who are openly anti-American with any regularity are other Anglophones. The Canadians tend to be the argumentative leftist douche type while in England and Ireland a lot of people get aggressive when they're drunk - start calling you yank, making fun of the accent, generally looking to start conflict. Even in this group, it is a small minority. The only surprising thing is that you'll see behavior that in the US would be associated with lower class hicks being exhibited by educated middle class people (a surprising number of English seem astonished that other nationalities speak English with a different accent). And the English are the only ones I've met who will use anti-Americanism as a way of digging at people they dislike for other reasons (I encountered it a lot when working in England from people who were jealous about pay, career opportunities, etc).

I haven't gotten much shit. I think the first video over plaid the anti-Americanism in Europe. Out of 8 months abroad, I can only remember 2 girls in Brazil for giving me shit about being American. I also had some people say they knew I was American. They vibe I got from the saying it was condescending, but whatever. Fuck 'em. That video makes some good points about "imagine a world without america." If America didn't pull the weight for Europe in the 2nd world war, Europeans would be wearing swastikas right now.

Even if that is Rooshs`experience it doesn`t mean it`s fact. I`d say in general it`s pretty much the same view on the US in Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Maybe Sweden is slightly more positive. Honestly I´d say George Bush Jr. didn`t do any favor to the americans reputation abroad.

We all generalize (countless times on this forum) about people, and americans aren`t alone in that regard. Fuck, as a norwegian, people think I hunt polar bears and am a socialist...

I can tell you one generalisation I make about americans traveling for instance. You are damn picky when it comes to food. You are shit scared of trying new things and preferably want a Burger King on every corner wherever you go. Now cruisify me!

Laugh

God I hate Burger King. I only eat fast food maybe once a month. I'll try most things once, given it's not something outrageous like dog turd stew.

I never got a bad vibe from any of the Scandinavians I met while traveling abroad. Maybe they were just too chicken shit to say anything to my face about me being America. I'd like to think otherwise though, because a lot of them were good peeps.

It is beating a dead horse to point it out, yeah, but "The Reardon" maneuver that Ricky Raw lays out is more constructive than what my buddy did, which was tell them they're a bunch of worthless chucklefucks and 'Murika is the greatest. I'm sure you guys have a lot of experiences with bitch behavior from foreigners but sometimes they're so good at what they do that you can't just threaten to kick their asses without looking like you're overreacting. That's the kind of situations this guy wrote his blog articles about.

Yes Hades, this thread reminded me of Ricky's post about the "Rearden."
It's good stuff. The five steps part is probably the best breakdown of how to deal with it (without kicking their asses, I guess) in the whole manosphere, since Durden's "AMOG"ing routine is basically to fight snark with snark.

edit - did a search of the forum and was impressed to see that this guy addressed an RVF question on his blog. Pretty cool.
