No, I think OP has a point here. It isn't just that Happy Hour is in decline.

Rather, it's that most informal social institutions are disappearing.

Mark Minter kind of hinted at this in his post describing life in the Boomer heyday of the 70's and 80's. Wherever you'd go you'd see people congregating - at the public pool, at the local park, at the mall, the video game arcade, roller rink, playground, and on and on. He pins this on the fact that there were more young people at that time, but I'd suggest it's also because youth back then were more outgoing and took more risks.

People today in the U.S. are just much less social and open to hanging out with people outside their social circle than they were a couple decades ago. That's why for most guys social circle game trumps cold approach. That's why the clubs aren't as packed as they were a generation ago. That's why even in places where you do see people - like in coffee shops or at the gym - they're all cloistered away, doing there own thing, on their laptop with their earbuds in, shutout from the outside world.

This is a pretty typical sunny day at Dolores Park in San Francisco. During Giants season people are everywhere, including nearby China Basin.

I see more gay couples in that picture than I do hot women.

I'm surprised how many young guys on here don't go out Thursday nights, drink beer, and chase pussy.....What the hell is College for?? My father is 65 and and he still goes bowling and to a bar on Thursday nights.

I got one of my 3 lays in College from "Paulie's Tavern" in Albany NY. Took some hippie chick to the $10 all you can drink Thursday night special.

Historically speaking it's always been that way too. Biggest threat to white men are other white men. Intra-racial conflict is always the greatest threat to any man. Blacks harms the most blacks, asians harm the most asians, etc. History says it's always been that way. I don't understand anyone who thinks race is the "end-all-be-all" factor.

I don't know about the US but in Canada MADD has destroyed happy hour. Up until a couple years ago happy hour was wide open. Now there are major restrictions on what can be served and how much they can charge.

I can't stand Happy Hour, but in CA, I think it is pretty popular.

Brunch is popular for sure.

And I hate brunch.
