I wish. It was flat the entire time I was around and the point in town was knee-waist high with minor windswell. Like I said, it's a NW-only spot. I was in Peru during the normal S Hemi winter.
Most of my trip I was posted up in Pacasmayo surfing the wave Peruvians call the "Freight Train." Anyone who's been dragged across an Indo reef or even been caught inside by a South Peak canyon set would disagree with the moniker, but it's a fun 500 yard + wall with occasional barrel sections and one hell of a nasty current at double overhead.

I've heard fantastic things about Montanita - like the right point is epic, fast, and fun, but not death-defying and easily surfable with a shortboard even at triple overhead. I was told by one Aussie that the locals there are huge dicks and will intentionally drop in and scream at travelers, but hey... if you're a visiting surfer in a lot of places you know the drill. It's on my list for sure.

that's cool ... didnt realise the point got that good. I was expecting to have to travel out of town for the better waves. Might be worth it anyway over the weekend to avoid the crowds.

I don't surf but have been to many of these surf towns. Mancora for one since you guys mentioned it. There are actually more popular surf spots just south of Mancora: Los Organos and Cabo Blanco/Punta Veleros.
I can bust out a mini sheet on Mancora if anyone's interested.
Another one that comes to mind is Bocas del Toro. I saw a point break that was barrelin when I was on a tour boat coming from Red Frog Beach. And the nightlife's decent around 4 nights a week. I was at AquaLounge on a wed night and people (mostly girls) were taking their clothes off, running around the club naked and jumping off a dive platform into the water. From what I heard this is a weekly thing.
One more is a place I haven't been to but was confided to me by a fellow traveler - El Tunco Beach in El Salvador. Supposedly it a party town every weekend, with people doing bonfires on the beach and the locals are really friendly and welcoming into their social circles.
I loved the setup at Bocas del Toro, Panama. If you go exploring in a boat there are so many good breaks to find. I wasn't impressed with the women and nightlife there though. Did you have a different experience?
I need to do El Salvador soon...I keep hearing about the waves there being world class with small crowds.
Love to hear some more about Mancora if you get a chance.
The true local women were unattractive but I met some 'local' girls - expats who were living there - who were more than bangable. One was a chinese girl who was a cashier at a general store. She was a really pretty asian spinner type.
The other was a very pretty anglo-euro girl who approached me while I was snacking on some street food outside Barco Hundido.
That said, the rest of the girls I met were turistas either at the clubs or out & about.
I did post up a datasheet on Mancora, which might give you a little more nightlife.
I was recently in the Carolinas for work. Hit up some cool beach town but surf-wise the Atlantic left a lot to be desired, as usual.
If you're back to SD for the race track you might wanna stop by Newport Beach. The wedge was insane two weeks ago. Ventura has been going off too. Looks like it's gonna be a solid SW season.

G, Biarritz is awesome, just awesome. Great town, great ladies (a ton of Swedish chicks in the summer, for some reason) and very good waves. I liked it way better than San Sebastián across the border, even though the latter may be bigger and with more clubs. I also think Biarritz fits your style better; classier and with more high end hotels and clubs.
You thinking of going there this summer?
MPM - never been. I think it might be next on my destination list. Probably hit it for a month or two whenever I next change jobs. Europe is the only continent (sans Antarctica) I haven't surfed.
Don't be so quick to dismiss the 5/4. I got used to the thick rubber quickly after moving north.

I have friends from that area; they tell me there are plenty of beginner waves when the swell's up in addition to the grinding barrels you see featured as the main attraction for better surfers.
In all honesty, though, I would probably go somewhere with warmer water to learn to surf.

Why I like Biarritz and a lot of the smaller towns surrounding:
surfing
not so much annoying groups that go on holiday for drinking and making trouble
a lot of people are relaxed
its just like 1200 kilometers from my hometown, I go there in july !
surfing and i LOVE french girls. The french girls at the south west coast might be less entitled compared to the girls in Mediterranean, and the Mediterranean does have annoying groups of people!
And yes since i'm from a colder country i'm sort of used to the water temperatures, it's not like in Costa Rica

G, might be better if I give information if I get back from Biarritz hasnt been there so long, but liked the vibe. Spent more time in surrounding villages such as Moliets and Mimizan, which I liked. Not necessarily a need for data sheets about those little towns since there are just a couple of bars and mostly one club. I'm looking forward to my France road trip with my buddy. Regarding dataheets, I can give information about some Dutch cities and 'secret jewels' of the country.
But on topic: places like Mimizan, Moliets, Vieux Boucau, Lacanau, etc. all those small surf towns down the gulf of Biscay are pretty cool!

Buzios, Brazil? Anyone been there? I've read it is a big beach party destination and has a lot of surf camps, don't know much about it otherwise though.
I've been. Did some surfing but was more there for the women than the surf. Very few foreigners which was nice, was almost all middle class Rio residents on holiday as its only about 2hours by bus away from what I remember. Lots of small bars and then a few big clubs like Pacha. It's a small town though...I'd say a week there is about all you'd want. Any more specific questions on it?

I was there this past summer for a few days. Really nice place and definitely has lots of girls who come into town for a few days from Rio and other nearby surrounding towns. Lots of rich Argentinians also. The key is to go during the high season or a holiday weekend. The place is slammed then and a lot of fun. If you go in the off season it can be really quiet.
Could give more details on places to go, stay, etc if you want.

after being married for 10 years, getting married at a young age(25), which prevented me from traveling the world, here are my pics from the limited stuff I have done;
Kauai - yes you all have been there but I have been there about 9x in the last 10 years and hands down is my favorite vacation spot. For the bachelor, probably not. In the summer I surf the south shore, in the winter Hanalei. Its consistent, good food, fairly inexpensive US beach hotels for the US ($200/night). There are women there but the night life sucks...
Montauk, this is my current spot. This summer I went about 6 times. Easy for gaming as there is a huge party scene there now. Waves, meh, but consistent and a good scene. I always throw bon fires on the beach. I rent a place on the beach in an old motel that will probably be sold any minute, been going there for about 10 years.
North County San Diego, in the fall. Someone posted about this and yes, its the best time of year there. October is spectacular weather and waves, and you wont find a better place to be in the US.

I've been there Rio but am not much of a surfer. It has a reputation as being a quite expensive and glamourous resort for Brazil's rich and famous, with lots of expensive restaurants and bars, so am a little skeptical that's its a great pure surf town but maybe I'm wrong. The main village seems pretty high end to me but maybe there were less expensive spots I missed. I did see many pretty women, but most seemed to be a little hoity-toity and with someone, but I'm sure it can be a good scene as there are numerous clubs in the area.
I thought Floripa is a better place to surf and also for better looking, more accessible women. Lot of Argentinians go there too so not just Brazilian. I even tried to do a little surfing at a small town south of Floripa called "Praia do Rosa" which had an incredible beach and awesome waves. The waves on the island where Floripa is seemed pretty big like 7-8 foot +?? Bunch of dudes from the UK were there on holiday when I was there and said it was amazing surfing.
Cool thing about the beaches in southern Brazil for me is that you seem to be able to walk waayyyy out from the shore before you are waist deep in water. I thought that was pretty cool compared to the beaches I know in Florida and California. Real surf culture on Floripa I'd say and had a bit more of a laid-back vibe.
