For danger the worst I've personally experienced is Camden and Trenton, NJ. Made the mistake of walking around both places as a white dude. In Trenton I actually went there many times to a good Mexican restaurant. One day I decided to go for a walk afterwards and a cop pulled over and gave me a lift back to my car as he said it wasn't safe.

That said I'd imagine the worst in the world are some places in Asia (like Bangladesh) or much of sub-saharan Africa.

I was there for work and got food poisoning (only time in my life) the first night so my mood/state was spoiled from the start and I just stayed at my hotel and couldn't wait to get the fuck out. Admittedly, my bias has been strong from the food incident and I should give it another chance, and check out the coast too.
On the other hand El Salvador, other than the capital, was awesome for waves. As soon as you hit the coast you have an endless supply of point breaks (think San Miguel or a small version of rincon) and most people think there's still a civil war going on so there weren't many traveling surfers when I went a few years ago.

It sounds like he may be talking about a Native reserve, which would make sense that its a shit hole, most in Canada are and its quite embarrassing that we have third world conditions in Canada. Most reserves have high murder rates, lots of social problems (sexual abuse, substance abuse, gangs, etc), don't have clean drinking water and are full of packs of roaming, feral dogs which often maul and kill children.

Check out this video of the Hobbema reserve which is located about 45 minutes from Edmonton, its fucked (burned out houses, major gang problem, etc). There are almost always bigger, badder shit-holes in the world. There are communities that literally live on top of garbage dumps.

In the USA, you can reach peak urban shit-hole (probably the shittiest brand of shit-holes in the nation) by visiting the bombed-out deep ghetto areas (as opposed to the more densely inhabited ghetto areas) of: Baltimore, Philadelphia, Detroit, and I'm sure some other cities. You'd likely have trouble ranking which bombed-out ghettos are shittier. Imagine living on a block where 70% of the 100 year old victorian style row-homes, on both sides of the street, are abandoned and many of those properties are missing parts of exterior walls. Now, the only view of the sky is the thin strip above the street. This goes on for perhaps one mile and it goes deeper than you can estimate. It's not the kind of thing that you drive un-alert or slowly through if you can help it.

I used to drive around these areas in my town for work. I could post some pics that would cause you to question the sanity of our society.

I was on Union Ave and Beale St. I had a blast in Memphis. Really congenial people and great food, especially if you comparing it to a provincial dump like....Knoxville. Where in particular are you referring to, Puckerman?

Not sure who said it, but I have to cosign St. Louis, Missouri and Birmingham, Alabama along with Knoxville, Tennessee. All very rough neighborhoods, unfriendly locals with no sophistication, and they did not feel very safe at all.

The Navajo Reservation in the four corners area of the US is the shittiest place I've ever been. Specifically Holbrook, AZ and Shiprock, NM. I've felt safer in downtown Detroit at midnight and Juarez at 3 am than either one of these shit holes just passing through at 5 pm.
