Very well could be, I was there for less than a day in 1998, but the area just outside of the port was the dirtiest place i've ever been.

Outside of Lima and the "major" cities, Peru is pretty much one giant shithole. I'm sure the amazon and macchu pichu are cool, but all those little towns are so shitty.

I was in Nassau last week and there are some rough areas, places you don't want to have to stop at traffic lights. Plenty of nice areas like Cable Beach though. Going to the Bahamas only to see Nassau however is a waste, need to hit the family islands.

Roughest places I have been that had fewest redeeming qualities: Bombay and Jakarta. Rats the size of cats and slum stench in the air. At least in Jakarta you can't fail to get laid though.

I read the title to this post and thought Guayaquil! It was funny when I opened it and it said that right off the bat. It is a huge shithole with stray dogs feeding off the piles of garbage that are everywhere. Im a dog person so that sort of bothered me. I had some pretty bad food there too. The best thing i ate was some sort of eggy soupy shit that comes in a baggy (help me out if you know what im talking about). The women are ugly for the most part. Sequestro express is a huge problem (express taxi-kidnappings). I even heard ecuadorians talking about how kids are getting taken and their organs are being sold now but you don't hear that on the news or anywhere except from them so I can't confirm it. The beach I went to (i think that it was called las playas about 1 or 2 hours away) was ugly with grey water. Salinas is supposed to be nice and is closer to Guayaquil but I'm skeptical. To be honest though, the people were great. Really nice and hospitable. I would go again just to party with the friends I made. I almost feel bad knocking it but its the truth.

Yeah, what a shit hole that place is. No idea about the eggy soupy stuff. I only spent two days in Guayaquil because I just couldn't stand being there. It was depressing. Once I got to Montanita, I tried ordering a normal place of food, and it was shit too, so I just stuck to burgers, hot dogs, and empanadas pretty much the whole time I was in Ecuador because they seemed like the only edible food.

I drove through Salinas and it looks like it has potential. Definitely a nice beach, but the town itself is a bit of a run down shit hole. If you're going to Salinas, you may as well drive the extra hour and a half though and go to Montanita. The Ecuadorian coast is very nice. Many of the towns are shit holes but it's not hard to look past when you have such a nice coast. Thing is, in a lot of the towns I have a sense that there isn't much to do, as many of them are very small. So if you are looking for fun and nice beaches, Montanita is where to go. If you want to escape the craziness that is Montanity, you can hit up one of the neighboring towns with equally as nice of a coast for a couple days.

Agra, India, without a doubt. The drive into Agra is one of the most shocking things a foreign visitor ever will see. The streets resemble small landfills, the people are tiny and emaciated, and the sidewalks(if they could be called that) are lined with hovels built out of discarded leather and newspaper. Half the buildings are wrecked and populated by monkeys that attack people, and the dogs, horses, and camels that for some reason wander the city are stick-thin and resemble zombies. Oh, and the river Yamuna, which runs through the city, is filthy, depressing and foggy. Plus there are random open areas that, for no good reason, are just full of garbage.

It is a fascinating place, though. If any of you ever visit India, drop in on Agra. Not only is the Taj Mahal spectacular, but some of the other tourist attractions, like the marbleworker's center, are well worth a visit. Plus the food is pretty damn good. Out of all the places that I've seen, however, Agra stands head and shoulders over the others in terms in general crappiness.

Mumbai is definitely up there. The most diverse city in the world, Mumbai's streets are stalked by burn victims aplenty, various disfigured beggars, and gigantic transvestites who scare the fuck out of everyone. Plus the streets are as trash-ridden and disgusting as everywhere else in India(even in the so-called nice areas). The place resembles New York on cocaine. Oh, and the airport generally reeks of urine.

Medford, Oregon, also deserves an honorable mention. Avoid it at all costs.
