I've only been to a few countries but out of all of those the worst place I had visited was one of the shanty towns just outside of ST John's in Antigua.

I was on one of the local buses (more like a people carrier with extra seats screwed in) when it broke down in this area.

Me and my LTR at the time had to wait an hour for someone to come and get the bus up and running.

In that time I had to endure the smell of open gutter / dogs with torn flesh running towards us while the driver used a big stick to chase them off and two gangs of youths armed with machete's fighting each other a block down the street.

Not forgetting to mention the roads and houses looking like they were falling apart.

It was an eye opening experience that showed me the other side to this beautiful island.

This happened a few years ago and the island has improved a lot since then.

I still visit regularly.

I put off biting on this thread for a long time considering the places I travel. (most would consider shitholes)

I can't stand South Sudan. Juba isn't that horrible as you can get a good meal and beer but fuck the country is the size of Texas and the last time I was there had a total of 33km of paved roads.

It's an absolute disaster to get around in the rain, travel outside Juba is terrible and almost always requires a flight to some shithole that might have power but will surely have malaria and probably cholera.

Cap Haitien, Haiti. First experience with utter poverty, UN bases, opens up your eyes. But then again the people were very good to me, and the charming colonial past peeks out at times. Must have been the only tourist walking around the town. Highly recommend hiking up the Citadelle.

First night I got to my hotel in Manila, some guy was being carried into an ambulance. The day before, he was sitting at the hotel restaurant drinking coffee. Some giant rat scurried out of the sewer and bit him in the leg. Poor guy was down for the count.

I can only imagine the diseases the rat had.

It looks like medieval times with donkeys, ox, wooden trough wagons on some of the main streets and especially in the rural areas.


Nha Trang, Vietnam outside the main tourist district and a few blocks deeper into the city gets grimy and polluted fast. Wouldn't want to live there for even a day.

Honestly, that sounds awesome. At least some action and things to see.

Biggest shithole for me is Barranquilla in Colombia.
It's super hot, super humid (same levels as Bangkok in summer). It never rains, so it is more or less a half desert. And there is really nothing to see or to do. You just don't want to leave you air conditioned room.

Yeah but the girls are hot and have big natural boobs (and there's the statue of Shakira )

What is with all the pussies on this board that complain of:

1) pollution - many times light pollution no worse than a U.S. city

Any indsutrial city in far eastern europe in the winter is depressing as fuck but one particularly stands out to me.

Tiraspol, Transinistria (technically moldova).

Its in a small rebellious province that is a unrecognized country eastern moldova that is run by corrupt russian gangsters and the russian army.

They still have the soviet flag hung up everywhere and pretend like the USSR never collapsed.

In order to get in you have to be on an organized tour as visitors and not usually allowed in, and once you get back into "real" moldova you will have problems with your passport stamps lol.

Honorable mention: Minsk Belarus. God so many babes there but never seen such a drab depressing city.

Tons of babes there btw, not much else.

Runner up: Recife, Brazil

The entire city smells like dirty sewage, its dangerous AF too.

Centralia, Washington State. Like most of Western Washington the area gets about 30 days of sunshine a year. Half the time there is a methodical, slow drizzle going on. It seems to get the people down and many of them have a listless, mean, rude, mendacious attitude towards each other. Someone from there told me that that the area has the highest rates of child and domestic abuse in the state. Some nearby towns like Vancouver (Washington), Olympia, Tumwater, and Aberdeen (where Nirvana is from) are a little better but not by much.

The Navajo Indian Reservation in northeastern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico has some beautiful scenery, especially Canyon De Chelly, but the people are not very welcoming to outsiders. Most of the canyon is off-limits to non-Navajo. Alcohol is outlawed on the reservation, so there are no bars and very few restaurants. The small towns can seem dusty, desolate, and dead. The majority of the women are not good looking and the men will look for an excuse to fight you. Otherwise, they'll look right through you as if you're invisible. In contrast, the Hopi reservation, closer to the Grand Canyon, is more friendly and the women are much better looking.

AGRA, INDIA. Home of the Taj Mahal... and nothing else. Literally just poverty. Nothing to do. The worst. Fortunately I was there for only a day and a half. Still too long. The Taj Mahal was incredible though.

You guys are throwing up cities like Paris, Barranquilla, Manila... fuck you have no idea. No options for girls. No clubs AT ALL. No fun things to do... AT ALL. Like I'm talking zero. When you walk around, there are like *literally* 10-20 guys for every FEMALE.

Spend more than 72 hours there and you deserve a fucking medal.

Parsing this thread. having been to over 70 countries, I feel like I have some decent perspective. Guys who have been out of the USA or Western Europe once or twice, no offense, but you really don't have a basis for comparison. This thread asks where you've been, so why not post, but keep in mind, there are dudes here who've been in Burundi, South Sudan, Gambia, really poor, isolated spots. No matter how bad St. Louis is, Gambia doesn't hold a candle to what's available there. (Camden, NJ, tho, that city could be dropped into many third world countries and not be out of place, except perhaps for having a higher murder rate).

Some of us veteran travellers, me, Beyond Borders, some others here, we like to hit these places, at least occasionally. I don't want my entire existence overseas to be in the foreigner friendly bubbles that exist in all-inclusive resorts (despite my travels in five star hotels, I almost never stay in an all-inclusive - thats like going to Orlando). Also, if a place is interesting, I'm less likely to consider it a shithole. If there's bangable talent, same deal. Its places that are shitty and uninteresting with few good looking women that recur in my mind as true shitholes.

For me, personally, I just was in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Its pretty shitty in parts, though I was in wealthier areas like Gulshan and areas next to it, which are still shitty, and I can imagine how bad it gets once one gets further away from the highlights of Dhaka. I didn't find Dhaka that terrible, tho air quality in spots in bad (and I live in China) and at least initially, it felt like everyone was out to rip me off (though I am attuned to it having spent so much time abroad and in developing nations). Still not for travellers new to the road...though I did see some good looking women, especially at some of the "higher" end places.

Other spots that were, shall we say, rough around the edges.

Chennai, India. The airport was like a zoo outside. Hundreds just waiting outside in the middle of the night. Why, I have no idea. Still the city had some good food, and it was interesting, as it was my first extended time in India.

Port au Prince, Haiti - Went to Cite Soleil. The largest slum in the western hemisphere. Not to be believed. Kids abound shoeless - drinking water you wouldn't want to stand next to. Violent gangs - received advice not to bring guns as we'd just be more a target if we had them for the gangs to rob us. The city itself has hardly been rebuilt - entire sections of the city consist of collapsed houses from the earthquake. No trees anywhere nearby (for many miles), all have been burned for charcoal. That being said, I found some worthwhile people and found a bar playing salsa music. There are thirty countries as poor as Haiti in sub-saharan Africa.

Cape town Shantytowns (not the tourist areas, which are beautiful). - Head north away from the gorgeous harbor, and table mountain area. Endless shanty towns filled with immigrants from Zimbabwe, Namibia and other bordering countries. Mozambique is poor but the population density obvious in those Capetown border shantytowns puts Maputo to shame.

For pollution, Shijiajuang in the winter (Hebei province, China), is a great place unless you'd actually like to be able to see the sky. Off the charts air pollution. And Hebei people don't exactly have the best reps among Chinese (close to lowest rep).

Certain parts of greater Manila, though you'll see the same shit all over the Philippines. Biggest income disparity I've witnessed in Asia.

Some places I have affection for, and would return to, despite poor infrastructure, poverty etc - Phnom Penh (friendly people, and good food), Sri Lanka (for natural beauty and quality produce), south Jordan (Al Aqaba).

Until I was about 26, I had never heard of Djibouti. I was working for the gov't and walked downstairs to get some paperwork, and my coworkers had their bags packed to go on a trip. So I asked them where are you guys going?

They said "Djibouti."

And I said, "You're not going to MY booty!"

Lame pun, I know. But I had to go google that shit to see where it was. And my coworkers said it was a huge shithole.
