I only drink neat whiskey and beer. Jameson or Jack is quite sufficient for me although I might drop some money on fancy bottle next time I find myself in a departure lounge.
Vodka gives me crushing hangovers especially smirnoff and Absolute. I never understood that... I thought that vodka was supposed to be fine and it was the darker liqueur gave you hangovers... Anyone else found this?

Tried this for the first time over the weekend



It tastes like the sea-briny, iodine-y ,you almost taste hints of seaweed and fish.It's easy to see why-here's the distillery



Not for single malt newbs probably, but a fine sip if you enjoy the Islay style

Yeah, no kidding. Nothing else goes down so smooth at the time yet makes me feel so bad the next day. Great thread idea!

One of my favorite American bourbon whiskeys is Knob Creek 9 year:

Also love whiskys like Talisker from the Isle of Skye, and Lagvulin/Highland Park which tend to be fairly peaty.

One unusual Scottish Whisky I like is Scapa 16 year bc it's a little different sort whisky, almost sweet in flavor, and goes down really smooth. Anyone should try it out if they want a little different, less peaty whisky.

This is one of the best, smokey with a caramel finish. It's old but affordable, 55 quid at Waitrose. Makes a great gift too.

Had a glass of this last night



I'd heard it was good, but it took me a while to find it at a bar. Finally, spotted a bottle at an Irish pub. Excellent-is smooth, sweetish and woody with a prominent buttery note

I recommend going to a bar that will provide a whiskey sampler. I did one a few months ago, I came to the conclusion that regular Jameson is pretty decent for the $. Midleton's was a little bit smoother but it was a very subtle difference when tasting them side by side. Redbreast had a different, earthier taste than the rest. Recently, I've been drinking John Sullivan's and it's a great deal at $25 bottle. Very smooth for the price. Much smoother than Michael Collins when sipped side by side. Jameson is fine for when you're out at a dive bar. Also, I highly recommend a non-leaded (do not want leakage into the whiskey) glass whiskey decanter which you can pickup on amazon for about $15.

Maker's Mark is my go-to for taste and price. Hope it's not going to be watered down like someone mentioned earlier.

Also enjoyed Glenlivet (15). Looking forward to trying Redbreast (12) sometime soon.

Started out drinking Jack. I still keep it around, but I discovered other stuff. Four Roses is my bourbon of choice. Laphroaig is my scotch of choice. Copper Fox (Virginia distillery, not sure how big they are outside of the mid atlantic) Rye whisky is pretty good.

They sure are. George Stranahan was Hunter S. Thompson's friend and neighbour. Launched the Flying Dog Brewery too.

Yep, that's what I thought. Woody Creek. My uncle lives a couple houses down from Hunters old house. I was living in Aspen for a few years. It's a small town, everyone knows everyone. My family's been there since the 50's. I never met the Stranahans or Hunter, but know many people associated with them.

Had a dram of this the other day-outstanding. I had never had an Aberlour before; this one is supposedly an attempt to recreate the taste of an 1898 bottle that was found hidden in the distillery in 1975. It has no age statement because it's a blend of whiskey aged from 5 to 25 years. Still a single malt though. It's a Speyside with no peating I could detect. Aging in oloroso sherry casks gives it a great rich sherry toned flavor-think dark cherries and raisins soaked in oloroso for a few days. Oddly, though this is a cask strength whiskey-usually meaning 110 to 125 proof I didn't feel the need to cut it with water as is normally the case with the the cask strength malts. I found myself enjoying the hot cinnamon flavor of the alcohol burn

one ounce of jameson chased down with one ounce of apple juice.

drink suggestion:
two ounces of canadian club, in a cold mug, with ice, filled with grape juice and a splash of lime juice.

the drink is called a "maniwaki", named after the preferred drink of natives in the town (of Maniwaki), in northern Quebec
both are local classics in the trendy plateau mont royal of Montreal.

Knob Creek is becoming a favorite of mine. Goes great with a classic propper whiskey sour: simple syrup, lemon juice, lemon peel, egg whites.
