(02-06-2019 06:11 AM)infinitejest Wrote:  Watched a great film from the nineties the other night, Falling Down starring Michael Douglas and Robert Duvall. Douglas is an average guy who finally snaps on a particularly rough day. He sets out on an odyssey across LA to see his daughter on her birthday and give her a gift. Along the way he encounters some of the city's human trash and the increasingly unhinged manner in which he deals with them is dark yet hilarious. The film is a black comedy as much as it is a thriller. Duvall is his foil, a man we see in the film's opening traffic jam who is able to keep his cool and laugh at the ridiculousness of it all. He's got his own issues, including his own washed up crazy cat-lady of a wife, but his actions throughout the film show another path you can take in the hell that modern day life can be.

The film has many redpill moments. In an early scene, Douglas calls his ex-wife and their conversation tells us everything we need to know about his current lot in life. She tells him "I pay rent for the house now" and we know he is just another man divorce raped and defeated by the system. He can't even see his daughter because his ex-wife claims he is a violent man and has a restraining order placed against him. Yet when the police ask if he ever hurt her or their daughter, she has nothing to say.

The film feels particularly prophetic now, as many of America's cities continue to decline into urban shitholes and more and more "economically unviable" men continue to snap and go on mass shooting sprees. I visited LA and SF last year and at times these cities felt like a classed up version of the film's nineties urban wasteland. During the day vagrants wander the street, high outta their mind muttering to themselves and spazzing out while at night they all set up tents and camp under the freeway overpass. But hey, you can walk into a classy, upscale restaurant and pay $20 for an appetizer and ask to be served water, so progress right?

I was thinking that this is probably a film that never gets made today. Looking up some contemporary views of it and seeing the usual leftist buzzwords like 'racist' and 'white-privilege' wasn't surprising. Renowned film critic Tasha Robinson of the AVClub called it her most hated film of the nineties. Reading her academic jargon and conclusion that it was a "profoundly hateful film" you know she completely missed the point and couldn't take away her bias to view it as anything other than an angry white middle-class male movie. I found it quite tragic by the end. Something was fundamentally rotten with modern society to produce so many broken individuals like we meet in the film, and it hasn't gotten any better since then. Tasha is wrong (but you probably already knew that). This is a great film, highly recommended watch.

I've posted about this great film before. It caused a huge stink when it came out. So much so, that they made sure to give D-FENS 'mental health issues' as a cop-out. You are right; there is no way this would be made today. I'll be surprised if it's ever shown on mainstream TV again.

I love the film. I watch it roughly once per year. The SJW crowd would have you believe that the character arc is a man spiraling towards psychosis. IMO, the character arc is of a man who has always played by the rules having the rug pulled out from under him by a corrupt system and a decaying society that rewards criminals more than it rewards the law-abiding middle-class -- and who finally reacts to the reality of his situation. Multiple people who work with police officers have told me that this film is a LEO favorite.

It was also cool how the film makers went out of their way numerous times to make the film about the decay of society and economics rather than about race. There is a touching scene where Foster passes a bank where a black man is protesting being rejected for a loan application, holding a sign that says "Not Economically Viable" -- the reason provided by the bank for his loan denial. The man exchanges a glance with Foster and says "don't forget me" as he is escorted away by police. The film is about the hard-working middle class (of any race) being stiffed by the bankers and other corrupt elements of crony capitalism. It is amazing that the film addressed this issue even before the financial repression of post-2008. This film could become an anthem of the Great Reset.

You will note in Falling Down that the slow escalation occurs and he only ever takes the weapons that are used against him first or threatened with.

Nice touch.

In addition, he also chooses suicide by cop (with a squirt gun) rather than harm an innocent.

Too many classic movie lines to list. "What is this? The last stand on Fiji?" I have actually yelled this line during a few out-of-control situations among random strangers. Haha.

I watched this film while growing up. It taught me how to order fast food.

Great analysis of my favourite film, by Jay Dyer and friends, so true about Sarah being redpilled and Reese being a hurried man, the whole film being an allegory for it, exactly what I thought. I loved when it was 16 and I love finding more layers even now. I'm in heaven with this stream.

Warning: its conspiracy tangented.

(Though I disagree with some parts, at first James Cameron was actually just a very smart man, a man who could turn his hand to anything, a rare autodidact, who just happened to get a lucky shot and brute forced his way into the business).

Gonna watch the new 'The Predator' movie tonight on Blu-Ray. I know it gets very mixed reviews and I'm expecting some disappointment, but dammit, I haven't been this excited to watch a new movie in years! Even if it's (as described in some parts) the '2nd best Predator movie', I'll be more than happy. Even the 3rd best will do.

I too recently saw Falling Down again and it really is a forgotten (at least by the mainstream) classic.

After seeing it this time in full anamorphic widescreen on Blu Ray I'd say it's actually one of the few films that unintentionally "benefited" from the 4:3 TV pan and scan for VHS back in the 90s. I remember it seemed much more fittingly claustrophobic in that format, especially the scenes where he's in the phone booth.

The opening scene is extremely claustrophobic and alienating -- and sets the tone for the entire film. The heat, the sweat, the noise, the lights, the claustrophobic setting, the irritating fly, the annoying human beings, the lack of control over your own environment, and all the signs (e.g., bumper stickers) of a decaying and fractured society. The opening scene is simply brilliant in how it sets up the rest of the movie. It shows a man who is under intense pressure and who has lost the ability to handle normal stress. We are well past Miller time. It is now whoop ass time.

Southern Comfort is on Amazon Prime right now. Really good and underrated movie I hadn't seen in a long time. It's an allegory about the Vietnam war set in the Louisiana bayous. Some National Guard soldiers on an exercise piss off the local Cajuns and end up getting hunted down in the swamps. It's got Powers Booth and one of the Carradine brothers.

Legends of The Fall is one of my favorite movies of all time.

The underlying story of what it is to be a man, a father a son.

When I was young i never really got it, if you get the chance watch it again with the red pill mindset you have now.

Some of the dialogue of the old Indian guy speaking is deep, or maybe its just the meaning I give it. The stuff bout Brad Pitts character and the bear inside him, resting and awakening is amazing.

It also follows the romance novel formula to a tea which is why chicks loved it so much (as well as having Brad Pitt play the part)the unobtainable bad boy alpha that she thinks she can tame and almost does..... But alas she settles with a beta and kills herself lol.

Falling Down is actually a manipulative Hollywood demoralization psy-op. It uses sparse nuggets of truth to sell a black-pill propaganda piece full of insidious anti-patriachy messaging and blame-shifting for the collapse of Western society and values. You can fight but not even your closest kin will care and go on to cherish your memory when you inevitably fail and perish.

Saw a surprisingly good move.

Prospect (2018)

Quote:A teenage girl and her father travel to a remote alien moon, aiming to strike it rich. They've secured a contract to harvest a large deposit of the elusive gems hidden in the depths of the moon's toxic forest. But there are others roving the wilderness and the job quickly devolves into a fight to survive. Forced to contend not only with the forest's other ruthless inhabitants, but with her own father's greed-addled judgment, the girl finds she must carve her own path to escape.

A constant light tension during the whole movie. You wonder what will happen next. Great acting, atmosphere and soundtrack.

What I liked about the movie was how low-budget a good movie can be; even sci-fi. Few actors, few special effects, another planet was a "simple" jungle in Canada... If you're interested in movie-making, that's a good example.

I saw this "Falling Down is a PsyOp" clip a while back, and don't really buy it. Maybe I don't want to because it's one of my favorite movies.

DFens' struggle as a single Dad being blocked from his daughter resonated with me because I went through a custody rape right around the same time the movie came out. The scene where the cop is interviewing Barbara Hershey, his ex-wife reveals a lot about the system:

Cop: "Does he drink?"
Ex-Wife: "No, I wouldn't say so."
"Do drugs?"
"Oh, no."
"But he has a propensity for violence?"
"Yeah, I think you could say that."
"Did he strike the little girl?"
"Well, no."
"Did he strike you?"
"Not exactly."
"Not....exactly?"
"There were times when I....thought he was going to....but I just didn't want to wait until he got around to it. It's hard to explain. He could, I think."
"You think?"

So DFens has never raised a hand to his wife or daughter, but he is still legally restrained from coming within 100 yards of his kid. He hasn't done anything wrong, but all it takes is the word of a disgruntled ex that she "feels" he might become violent to remove him from his home and separate him from his child. This is what the DV/Family Court apparatus does to men -- push you to the brink until you can't take it anymore, get angry or lash out. Now you've proven them right. "See, this dude is just an angry, violent Dad. No custody, maximum child support!"

I've experienced this bullshit which alone is enough to make a man crack, so DFens has my sympathy as marginalized Dad.

Another fascinating aspect of the film was the contrast between DFens and Prendergast (Robert Duvall), the cop who finally takes him down. They share similar experiences of being working stiffs who lost their young daughters, and having crazy wives (Prendergast's wife, played by Tuesday Weld, is a good on-screen example of a high-maintenance BPD nag). But Prendergast is portrayed as a good-natured, optimistic guy who rolls with the punches (beta?). DFens, on the other hand, is embittered, angry, lashing out at every injustice, and in the end pays for it with his life. Two similarly situated guys navigating life in different ways, reaching very different outcomes.

And of course the Whammy Burger scene is a classic. (Trivia: That's Michelle Pfeiffer's sister playing the amused counter girl in that scene.)

What total BS! At the 9-10 minute mark this guy accuses Foster of using excessive and disproportionate force after using a bat to defend himself against multiple gang members, one of which pulled a knife on him. This reviewer does not even know the definition of a reasonable response to the brandishing of a deadly weapon in a self-defense situation, yet he attempts to critique a movie with such a scene. If multiple assailants threaten you with a deadly weapon (such as a knife) you can exercise your right to defend yourself by shooting (and killing) them with a firearm and this is fully justified as a reasonable response to a threat of serious injury or death, yet this clown thinks that the use of a bat under such circumstances is excessive. Pathetic. I stopped watching the video at that point -- and nothing that I heard before that point made much sense either.

Rainbow RE: The Movie Thread
I'm on a cruise at the moment an during my downtime I've been watching some movies they have on demand. Here is a quick run down of them for all of my fans...... all 2 of you

Venom: Decent enough for a modern superhero flick. Tom Hardy was well cast for the role. Story was ok, special effects were fine, overall a watchable movie.

Billionaires Boys Club: Movies based on true events always elevate my interest. I thought this was a well executed take on the rise and fall of the young men involved.

Justice League: Ten minutes into the movie I was not sure how much more I could watch... within the next 5 minutes I cut it off and started the movie bellow.

Bad Samaritan: I actually really enjoyed this movie... possibly because of the Maserati or possible cause I watched it after watching 15 minutes of Justice League and even The Room would be first class cinema when coming over from Justice League. Back to the Bad Samaritan I like it all the story, the setting, the actors, everything.

Justice League:
After texting a friend about my dismay of this movie he told me "I thought it was pretty good" So the next night I decide to give it another go. Ten more minutes into the film I'm not sure how much more I can watch... within the next 5 minutes I'm ready to turn it off. However I suffer through and finish the movie an I must say its pure shit. I could go on a tirade about my hatred for this film but I don't need to relive that kind of negativity.

They sure know how to make trailers deceitful

I recently watched the documentary, Won't You Be My Neighbor?, just now. It's about Mr. Rogers and the impact he had with children. It seems like he did evangelizing, but reaching out to children. It shows he couldn't really be a child or express himself at times so he did through puppets and his show.

It's really good, it's a documentary I recommend.

I'm co-signing this one. Great little movie that no one these days has ever seen because it's never on cable. If you have Amazon Prime and like thrillers, check this one out. It got an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Interesting point on it being an allegory for Vietnam. I can see that now that I'm older and wiser.

I concur. I just watched the film last week -- and I really enjoyed it.

I do believe that Mr. Rogers, like Dr. Spock before him, contributed greatly to the current snowflake generation, which told several generations of children that they were "special" just for being who they were. He certainly meant well and he was a sterling role model in many ways. But what got lost in his self-esteem building agenda was the fact that being special usually comes from working hard and having high expectations for yourself.

The world owes you nothing. You must work and compete. You're special? Prove it.

Having said that, there is no question that his heart was in the right place and that he was filled with love for the most innocent among us. That, by itself, means a great deal in an often brutish world.
