Kindle Fire HD
I just bought one - love at first sight !

Its totally amazing what you can do with this device for only 199 dollars/euros !

Easily the best audio quality for any tablet. Only tablet with 2 wifi antennas for better connection. Great screen quality (higher res even that the yet unreleased iPad mini).

RE: Kindle Fire HD
Lets use this thread to list your favourite android apps

You dont have to limit them based on the fact that you dont get the full google market / play store on the kindle HD

There are ways around that Wink

RE: Kindle Fire HD
I read a lot of Amazon reviews about the Kindle Fire HD.
Everybody tends to agree that the hardware is really good and at a good price, but at the same time I read about a lot of problems in the firmware and generally in the software.
Some people warned about an excessive of advertisement screens during the normal use of this tablet.
What's your opinion about this?
I still don't know if I should buy it or not.

RE: Kindle Fire HD
I have had no problems at all with the firmware / software

Ads only appear in one place which is the slide to unlock screen (in the background) and there are two ways around that

1) Pay amazon 15 to switch them off
2) Root (ie jailbreak) device and turn them off yourself

I have no hesitation in recommnending that you buy it

RE: Kindle Fire HD
Is it already easily rootable? The Amazon version of Android is simply piece of crap, and you don't even have access to Google Play store or installing anything outside of Amazon's app store. I would buy it only if I can root it right away to at least Android 4.1.
Actually looking for a cheap, light travel tablet right now, will probably go with Nexus 7, 16 GB version just went down by $50 to $199, and 2 new versions were released; $249 for 32 GB and $299 for 32 GB with mobile (HSPA+). Stock, undiluted Android, same display as Kindle HD, quad core processor, better battery life, GPS, compass, etc. Both tablets miss SD card slots (this really sucks). Kindle has HDMI port, that is probably it's only advantage.
BTW, Nexus 10 was just announced, 10.1 inch display, better than iPad 4 and starting at $399. Probably very good performance, hopefully on par or better than iPad 4. Also it would be worth looking into the Kindle fire HD+ (8.9", 1080p display) and the 2 new Nooks (good specs for the price, and both have SD slots, but again comes with crappy version of Android, so makes sense only if you can root it).

RE: Kindle Fire HD
Been thinking about buying one myself. The screen looks very vivid and nice. Has anyone tried Plex or XBMC on it to stream movies?

Extremely easy.

Once you root it you can install google play, remove the ads on the lock screen etc.

Two different apps that stream movies from your home PC. XBMC just point it to a shared folder on your network full of movies. It'll play anything.

Plex is similar but requires Plex Media Server to be running on your PC.

I use XBMC on my jailbroken Apple TV and it works great. There's an android version out as well. I think it would be perfect for laying in bed and watching a newly downloaded movie.
