They were celebrating a birthday. Once a fire started, they couldn't get out.

The bodies of the 15-year-old victims were found Friday in Koszalin, in northern Poland, after firefighters extinguished a blaze in an adjacent room. Asphyxiation is the probable cause of the deaths.

A young man was hospitalized with burns. Initially described as a 25-year-old, the hospital said he was 26.

Poland’s firefighting chief, Leszek Suski, said Saturday that electrical wiring at the location was makeshift and too close to flammable materials, while the man in charge was probably not there when the fire broke out.

“Security was not ensured and that led to the tragedy,” Suski said.

He said there was no proper evacuation route and a “lot of negligence” at the location.

A spokesman for local firefighters, Tomasz Kubiak said the units responding to the blaze had to use specialized equipment and force their way into the “Escape Room.”

Poland’s interior minister has ordered fire safety inspections at more than 1,000 “Escape Room” locations across the country.

Highly popular among teenagers in Poland, the “Escape Room” game has players locked inside a room or building and they must find clues that help them get out.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has sent condolences to the victims’ relatives. Officials have extended psychological and other support to the families. The school which the teenagers attended was extending counselling and support to their friends and colleagues.

Local residents were placing flowers and lights in front of the location, a detached house.

The girls were celebrating one of their birthdays.

Polish government then declared a mandate to inspect all 1,100 escape rooms in the country within one week. They already shut down 26 of them that had fire code violations.

I've tried one, likely not something I'll feel a strong urge to try again but adequately entertaining. The theme of the one I tried with a small group was about the equivalent of an extremely low budget Indiana Jones movie or Tomb Raider game, with only puzzles and no action scenes.

I imagine that you could probably knock down the walls between some of the sets - looked like a lot of plaster and papier-mache. But on the other hand certainly parts of it seemed sturdy enough - not to mention darkness and lacking sense of direction - that it likely was a potentially lethal fire hazard.
Maybe the operator - there was a computer system - has an option to open up an emergency route. But that's hardly reliable in every situation.

I've always wanted to go to an escape room, but the ones in NZ are just too small and expensive.

Also the economies of places like New Zealand / Australia / Canada tell you the ROI is better from being a Slumlord / Crackshack Flipper than trying to run a legitimate business. Actually, in terms of education, Poland does place quite well in almost every single study.

One study is from 2000, and things have definitely not gotten worse since then.

As for trust level, based on the personal experience, the one with the UK ranking lower should be more accurate.

University education is a different beast though, but based on my manual research of comparing universities ranking from two years ago, Poland ranked average+ in the European Union. Zero prestigious unis to boost the position and most representing more or less the same level.

As for the number of escape rooms -- the reason there are that many escape rooms is because they got extremely popular lately. Poland is absolutely garbage for small business owners.

In my work I often come across projects where Polish "electricians" have been at work. Their handy work is instantly recognizable when you see it. Shit materials, no planning, have no understanding of building codes, have no real knowledge about electricity and wiring etc. For them its just a cable from A to B. I´ve seen some pretty scary shit that could have started fires and or killed someone. Where I live we have many of these idiots running around. Some homeowners see them as a way to fix their houses on the cheap, but what I´ve experienced is they usually end up costing people much more then it would have cost to have a skilled person come in to do the job.

Our work did an escape room. It was fun.

They're challenging. Pretty sure all the rooms in my city are less than 50% escape rate.

My coworker told me she did one with her daughter and a group of adults. She said her daughter was amazing at it...because of kids' flexible thinking maybe.

According to this they're tied for 16th among all countries with an average IQ of 99. Not "high IQ" by western standards but globally I'd say we can call #16 out of 81 high IQ (especially considering they rank higher than the US, Canada, Australia, Denmark and others).

Edit: But yeah to your point about western countries tanking in the IQ department (for some unexplained reason).

That was mainly because they were losing a lot of jobs to working class Poles, not because of anything particular with the Polish themselves, and most Poles move there because the average wage is 6 times higher, which is mainly because their economy got gimped by communism. A huge chunk of major Polish cities are still much safer than some of the fucked up shithole places of London and cities like Croydon. And FYI Poland was in the top 20 most visited countries in the world for 2018.

Well you guys accomplished the Brexit. So the number of white Europeans go down but levels of African, Middle East and Indian immigration will remain the same and/or increase over time. Time will time whether this is what people actually wanted or if they were just too cowardly to demand a complete shut down of the open border immigration system.

IQ doesn't matter if your executive function is completed buggered with. And such as it is when a lot of Gen X and Gen Y Eastern Europeans grew up with malnutrition, Communist brainwashing and their pregnant mothers were drinking alcohol. But you're right in the long term Poland will probably match or dare I say eclipse a lot of the west.

Well a High IQ, Ethnically Homogenous Country wouldn't Have their citizens keep leaving to go to other countries. Yeah English don't want poles cause they compete for jobs. The same way Americans don't want Mexicans cause they lower wages and also compete for jobs. Yet we elected a guy who wanted to build a Wall on the border with Mexico. You can make all the excuses and give all the reasons you want. Poland isn't a country that you want to look up to. That's why so many of their citizens have left.

The point i'm trying to make is that if Poland is held up as some High IQ Ethnostate then i'm REALLY REALLY underwhelmed. Because Poland isn't that great.

I'm not British. I just made that post replying to someone holding up Poland when poland is basically just Mexico with lower crime. Same way mexicans try to flee to america it's the same way poles flee to germany and England. It's not an example of a country that's highly successful that you want to hold it up as "High IQ, Ethnically homogenous"
