No. I drove to Belize twice in the last three months. People say our border state is the most dangerous. The cab driver today said we were crazy for driving and he is from Monterrey. We were the only car for a good amount of time though.

Honestly, I would take the Texas route. Cross at Reynosa, hit Victoria, San Potosi, then Queretaro. You still get to see slot of Mexico on the trip. Still the less time driving in Mexico the better. Life is a journey but some journeys aren't worth the risk.

But this is coming from a guy who drive through Mexico four different times post drug war. Still I would take the Texas route.

I was just about to post this. Like the article says, it comes down to whether he's extradited to the US. If he goes to Mexican prison he'll buy his way out. Can't wait to see what the Mexican officials decide.

They have always known where Chapo was at. It was a matter of time. Why pull the plug now? He probably messed with the wrong politician or overused his power. Either way I hope there isn't a power struggle with the group. Things have been relatively great the last two plus years. We shall see.

The US captured his ass and announced the capture in order to force Mexico to hold him. If Obama wouldn't force the issue El Chapo could've escaped and the Mexican gov't would say "oh, we right on his tail" or "he escaped through a window while in a holding cell overnight".

Notice how the US was the first the announce the capture, simple as that.

The US could take out every Mexican kingpin tomorrow if they wanted. Wouldn't even need any men on the ground. A small fleet of predator drones would end it quick.

I've got a question for those running game in Mexico. How much do you tone down your style when you go out in the evenings?

Some guys, part of their game is getting suited up or at least rocking some expensive outfits which make you stick out, grab attention when you walk into a club/bar. Obviously during the day when in sketchy areas or in general I tone it down, don't draw attention, I do this in parts of EE too as I've had a few run-ins with gypsies, but is that something you guys intentionally do when going out in Mex, toning it down a bit?

Or does it even make a difference? If you're a gringo, you'll stick out anyway and could be a target? Seems it could be more of luck of the draw, wrong place wrong time type thing.

It all depends. In the end, you should know if you are in a good or not. If you are in the good/barrio/ghetto then tone it down. When I was in Rio last year, the favela I was in was cool. I also knew which favelas that were "dangerous". Same when I was in Monterrey, GDL, Belize, Thailand and Cambodia. Locals will let you know what's up or even the forum.

IMO, most hoods in the world are the same. 90 percent of sketchy people don't want to risk getting a charge. I've live in LA(south central), SD(National City), and New Orleans(15th ward). Mind your own business and don't flash cash and you are straight in any good or ghetto in the world.

I had zero issues during my stay there last winter, walking around at night by myself, traveling via ADO, never saw anything strange.

I would say your level of safety will have a lot to do with where you decide to go.

I live here and no problem, well the other day I was driving and I did it wrong-way in a street without signs. A policeman stopped me and wanted to detain my car, I gave him money and that was all.

Mexico is fine, I've been living in Leon for 4 months, nothing has happened to me. Just don't visit dangerous areas or go out alone at night, and don't get drunk.

According to statistics, Mexico is having its most violent year since the Calderon years in 2011.

But overall the Yucatan peninsula is considered the most safest areas in the whole country. Most of the violence is in the border states and mostly near the border.

I'd go. I love Mexico. Great people and great bitches.
