Penang Report

Spent ten days in Georgetown. Disappointed in the UNESCO heritage. Melaka is better. Not much natural beauty nor good beaches. Some Nightlife on Lovers Lane with one Party Hostel. Expensive alcohol. Everyone smokes. Overall wouldn’t recommend Penang for game nor a vacation.

Transport
Bus 401 runs you from the airport to Georgetown in an hour. A taxi is ten times the price and takes 30 min. I rented a scooter for RM35/day. You can get a bit less if you rent longer. There’s a free circular route CAT bus in Georgetown. I just walked or took Grab everywhere. The scooter is useful for going around the back side of the island.

Accommodation
I booked last minute and didn’t have much choice on AirBnB. I got my own room and bath for $10/night just outside historic district. I wouldn’t recommend staying in a resort since it’s not worth it. Batu Ferringi would be the place for that. A bit isolated from the sites though.

Georgetown
The UNESCO quarter is hodgepodge and a bit dumpy compared to Melaka. Too many buildings were knocked down in the 80s and many more in need of restoration. I was quite surprised by this. Both cities got UNESCO at the same time in 2008. However Melaka being the backwater never got developed so is far more charming to stroll.

Melaka also has way more museums. Pretty much all the attractions in Penang are outright tourist traps that should be skipped. There must be 10 trick art “musuems”. The state museum is shuttered indefinitely and Fort Cornwallis is in terrible shape. Really pathetic for a UNESCO World Heritage District.

Armenian Street has some great chinese heritage in the form of clan jetties and ancestral halls. Most of the Street art around Penang is dumb black wire cartoons. Ipoh in Perak has more whimsical and pretty murals. Another disappointment for Penang. I didn’t even bother seeking out the street art because it was so dumb and ugly. Armenian Street has a night market on Saturday but it was nothing special.

There’s a big Little India. A good place if you’re looking to experience festivals such as Deepavali, Thaipusam, etc. I caught the tail end of Dewali.

The locals are British educated and most everyone seemed to speak fluent English. The heavy British heritage here reminded me of SG and HK. They make a big deal about the food but I found it no different than any other tourist areas of Malaysia which isn’t saying much. I’d rather have subway than most Malaysian dishes.

There’s maybe 400-500 Germans living here too. I was told octoberfest is celebrated with a beer garden. Shoot for the free Walking Tour with Penang Global Tourism at 10:30 on Tu, Th, Sat. Sign up early as its limited.

Full body assages are about RM60/hour on the low end. I was offered “extra services” but declined. Just north of the corner of Chulia and lovers lane is where the hookers hangout. Beware any girl there giving you ioi. They are easy to spot.

Nightlife
For the party vibe you’ll want to stay around the intersection of Chulia and lovers lane. There are dorm hostels and proper boutique hotels.

Tipsy Tiger Party Hostel has the young backpacker crowd playing beer pong and dancing to YMCA. Unfortunately everyone smokes and it’s a young crowd. I felt uncomfortable. It’s only dorms too so good look getting a decent Fuck Fuck on.

Some resto/bars spill onto Chulia Street. Most places are very very small or otherwise awkward to game because of the tables arrangement. I never stayed out past midnight. But most bars are open until 2-3am. The Odeon at the top of Chulia seemed to be the only Club. A bucket of five beers starts at RM100.

Talent
Chinese heavy city. I’ve seen a few foreigners here with attractive local women. Unfortunately, the guys were not attractive so I’m guessing white knight/sugaring scenarios. If you’re ok with backpackers there are plenty of those. Most tap out around a 6 at best.

Tipsy tiger had decent ratios and some cute white girls in groups of 2-3. You’ll be much better off with a wing. I saw a couple Street roaming bachelor groups, ten strong, standing in circles making game plans for the night. The smartest play is probably getting your own hotel room and partying at the Hostel with one or two other guys max.

Around Penang
Driving around the Island was unrewarding. The beaches aren’t nice and the National Park is a joke. I took a boat ride for RM80 to monkey beach. I didn’t even bother getting out walk. There’s a few small waterfalls but not really worth the trip. Supposedly there are stinging jellyfish all around Penang and langkawi so no one swims.

Penang Hill is worth a trip. Avoid the weekend queue. I did the Habitat elevated Walkway at sunset which includes a night walk (RM66). Unfortunately the view was fogged in. Weather has been rainy every night. I thought rainy season was June-July maybe into Aug/Sep but locals said also Nov-Feb is monsoon. More on the East China Sea side but also effects here too I guess?

Komtar Tower is ugly as fuck even at night. It has an observation platform with a nice view. Unfortunately it was rainy. The base has a bunch of tourist trap attractions. Pretty much every bus around the Island starts here.

Alternatives
I can’t really recommend any other atttactions even though I went to all of them. Most of Penang is unremarkable or straight up tourist traps to be avoided. The two Peranakan Mansions in Georgetown are the obvious standouts.

Luckily I had a girl from KL come up in the weekend so I didn’t really have to bother gaming. Tinder is shit here. Don’t even bother. It’s too hot for street game. Malls are spread out far from Georgetown. We drove an hour to checkout the Orangtan Island Sanctuary near Taiping (rainiest place on peninsula). It rained for 20 min so they closed early for the rest of the day. Total bust.

I spent a week in Melaka. Jonker Street has a weekend night Market that is lively. Plenty of hostels and private accommodations around there in Chinatown. The vibe is more chill and more pleasant for strolling. Easier to meet people. Just One main bar everyone kinda converges around in the evening so Essie Troy meet people and do street/cafe pickup.

GTFO
The ferry to Langkawi is 2-3 hours. It much shorter if you Bus to kedah and take it from there. The water can be really rough. Cigs and beer are 40-50% cheaper in Langkawi. Seasonal Ferry from Langkawi to Thai Islands starts in November. I haven’t been yet but I’ll jump the gun and say stick with the Thai Islands unless you have a special reason for wanting to see Malaysia.

SUMMARY
Malaysia’s best getaway island for beaches, nature, and game. Duty free status means cheap cigarettes, booze, chocolate, suitcases, etc.

How cheap is it? 40-50% cheaper than mainland Malaysia. Everyone gets drunk and stuffs themselves!

HOW TO GET THERE
To my knowledge and experience this is Peninsular Malaysia’s only island with a working airport. There are several flights a day bringing both domestic and international tourists.

Likewise hourly ferries from Penang, Kedah, and Perlis are bringing in hordes of domestic tourists.

Langkawi is on the border with Thailand but still a short flight from KUL. The airport is on the west side of the island near Cengan Beach (which is where you’ll want to stay). Grab is available.

Langkawi is accessible by ferry from Penang, Kedah, Perlis. All boats arrive in Kuah on the east side. You do NOT want to stay in Kuah! A grab from Kuah to Cenang is RM25. Touts at the ferry terminal will rent compact cars for RM60 (or less with haggling).

Most day trips via boat depart from Kuah, but don’t worry you will get a free bus transfer. Stay in Pantai Cengan!

The sea can get rough from Jul-Sep (rainy season) particularly from Penang which is the longest route (2hr). I took the advice of another RVFer and went via Kuala Perlis which is the shortest route.

(I spent a few days in Alor Setar, Kedah and Kangar, Perlis. These are small agricultural cities in Malaysia’s “Rice Bowl”. While not as conservative as Kelantan or Teranganu they were still rather boring. I wouldn’t recommend them to the average tourist.)

Onward ferry travel to Ko Lipe in Thailand is popular with backpackers. Most are coming in from here rather than going to. This ferry is seasonal and starts in November. Ends in May.

GAME
The trickle of backpackers coming down from Thai islands means lots of western girls. Mostly 2 sets. Find a wing!!

You will benefit greatly from a wing. Every cute girl I meet in Langkawi has at least one (ugly) friend with her.

If you’re very lucky they will be Japanese staying in a hotel. I got this my first night and it was a pleasure to game them.

More likely you will be dealing with western backpackers staying in hostels. You’ll need to keep your 2-3 set from turning into a super group of “friends from the hostel” who waste the whole night watching the lame fire show on the beach.

There are large groups of Muslim Malaysians, Chinese Malay, and Chinese mainlanders. Avoid all three. It’s a waste of time unless you speak Mandarin.

LOGISTICS
Cengan Beach is small enough to walk by foot. The northwest end has a few elegant beach resorts starting at around $200/night. Things turn crummy from there. The alley leading away from the beach has several budget guesthouses/motels for under $25/night. I found one for $12 with AC and my own hot water toilet.

Rent a scooter! Prices start at RM25/day. It’s worth hunting around for a helmet with a face mask. The island is dry and sand blows in your eyes even with aviators.

The scooter is now your excuse to isolate one girl from the set. No room for her ugly friend! Most girls I gamed were too scared to ride a scooter. “Hey it’s nothing to fear. I’ll take you for a ride right now!” And we’re gone...

Make sure to get two helmets and keep the extra inside. The cops don’t care if you drink on the street (I asked “no problem”). But they will ticket for helmets (so I was warned).

The main strip is lined with shops, restuarants, hotels, massage, and tour services.

-Can of Guinness (at duty free) only RM3.70. Have a photo of your passport on your phone. The duty free shops also close around 10pm. Convenience stores stay open later but charge a little more.

If girls want to watch the fire show insist on getting beer at the duty free before 10pm then watching from beach for free. Otherwise YOU WILL be roped into a hostel mega group on beach chair beanbags (HMG on BCB). If this happens drown yourself.

Cengan has wave runners, paragliding, banana boats, etc. Swimming sucks due to jelly fish. But sunsets are pretty damn beautiful.

The island has other beaches but the only one I’ll recommend is Tanjung Rhu in the north central area. Get her by motorbike or as part of a mangrove tour. You can see Thailand’s Ko Tarutao from there.

Most of the nicer resorts have their own “private” beach which is hard to access unless you’re staying there. I’d suggest just focusing on Cengan. Most girls are here for 3 days or less. You often meet them with less than 24 hours to go!

Most girls are with their boyfriend. It’s worth hanging back for a moment to scan for a guy nearby or just avoid direct game altogether.

Do the mangrove boat tour through Kalim geopark. (You can go from Cengan with transfer or directly book on tanjung rhu beach)

Thursday Night Market in Cenang. A few blocks inland from beach but easily walkable. The market moves around the island and can be found other places on alternate nights too.

Bring peanuts to feed the monkeys from the mangrove boat. They also stop at a bat cave and fish farm where you feed giant stingray and trevally. Avoid doing this as a night tour.

Skip the tourist traps:
Crocodile Park (boring)
Bird Park (for kids)
Perdana Gallery (dumb)

There are three waterfalls all of which are good. Though Teruman is just a trickle in dry season (Nov-Mar, which is tourist season).

Highlight of the island is the cable car and sky bridge. Aim for 6:30 on a weekday to see sunset and avoid lines. Seven Well Waterfall near the base is good too.

you did not get shadow banned, i can confirm tinder in malaysia is shit, my match rate was lower than i get in many parts of europe. im not sure about langkawi but in KL i failed quite badly. also about 70% of the girls had hijab and a lot of fatties ,so the quality was very low.the hot ones are like 10% tops.malaysian girls seem entitled with shitty attitude and no hotties . anywhere else in SEA is better.even singapore is way better. TIOMAN ISLAND REPORT

Just for comparison this is the other island people from KL like to visit for a weekend. It’s off the coast of Pahang (on border with Johor).

Some people also like Perhentian Island off Terranganu but I haven’t been yet. I’ll do east coast of Malaysia another time.

The bus from TBS to Mersing is 5 hours. Then you have to wait for a ferry. The ride was over 3 hours because of all the stops it makes around the island!

I stayed at Kampung Salang which is the most backpacker friendly. Yet there is hardly anyone but a few tourists scattered in small bungalow style hotels. Mostly groups and couples.

The snorkeling was very good. The day I went for scuba conditions were terrible with almost zero visibility. Chalk that up to weather.

The round the island boat tour stopped at a good waterfall but the rest was boring. The twin peaks were shrouded in clouds.

Took all day and night to get back to KL.

Duty free shopping is limited to the main town which the round the island tour usually stops at for an hour.

PANGKOR ISLAND REPORT

Well Tioman isn’t so bad. Lots of Singaporeans like the islands around Johor/Pahang border for a weekend. I barely saw anyone visiting Pangkor.

So now let’s compare another step down. Pangkor is a Chinese fishing island off the coast of Perak. It’s historically important. The British Treaty signed here created the first toehold for colonization of the peninsula.

There’s not much to do. Truly a chill out destination. I rented a scooter and drove around for a day. A few temples. One beach. A small museum.

Honestly I don’t know why Pangkor is on the tourist circuit. It’s hard to get to. Maybe it was because of a holiday but getting from the ferry back to KL took all day and night causing me to miss my flight.

This is why it’s so nice to be able to fly straight into Langkawi!

I hope you Pumpkin Pie Stateside Suckas didn’t freeze your nuts off over Thanksgiving. I heard it was the coldest ever.

By plane it’s one liter of alcohol for foreigner. Less for Malay.

Try smuggling cheap cigarettes and booze back to SG and you’ll get your ass caned. It’s unaffordable to have a house in SG anyway.

Many Singaporeans now have weekend homes in the ultra boring Johor countryside. It’s literally ten times cheaper to live there. There’s nothing to do in JB city. Maybe a half day even as a tourist. The islands or a few national parks like Endau Rompin which I could write a nice report on as well if you’d like.

I’m not in KL and haven’t been for months. As for it being a shithole. KL is a very livable city, though I was bored after a month.

It’s the second most livable SEA city after SG. Yes it’s not SG. I lived in SG already. And a dozen other Asian cities.

KL’s road network is not well laid out, but my girl did all the driving. Sweetheart. That would annoy me if I lived/commuted there. The mass transit is very good if not excellent. Grab is cheap.

I’ve systematically traveled Malaysia for about 5 months. Been to almost every attraction. I have a wealth of info. I’ve shared plenty with other members who didn’t react like a butt hurt loser.

I wouldn’t recommend it for game. I came here to get a deep understanding on Malay culture. Indonesia had such poor cultural attractions. And shitty immigration policies.

I admit I didn’t finish all of Sabah. Didn’t get to 3 states of Pahang, Kelantan, Terranganu. Another trip.

I haven’t been to KL in months. Not much reason to go back. Girls there are happy to come meet me around the rest of the country.

Very few guys ever make it outside KL. Granted it’s not the most encouraging intro to a country. Part of the problem is managing expectations.

MY isn’t a magnet for fun game. It’s part of the small club of developed Asian nations (Korea, Japan, Taiwan, SG). But it’s conservative Muslim, mostly ugly girls, obesity, etc.

MY is sandwiched between two much better destinations (Thailand and Indo). Both way more fun, easy, cheaper. Hard to find a decent wing here.

Less touristy option than Penang and in my opinion more charming. Some great street food and local dishes too.

Most famous is the drunken chicken with bean sprouts. Mmmm...

Ipoh, Perak is 3-4 hour bus ride north from KL. Car women from KL have been known to drive this moderate distance. This long weekend’s special is quality pecan pie pumping, but feel free to order off the menu. (Actually have a funny birthday surprise photo of cake at my door from Ipoh. Such sweethearts.)

International airport has one daily flight to SG. The old town is all walkable set against a small river with beautiful Mountain Views.

Town is 75% Hakka chinese. Once the world’s richest tin mining district. Having a car really helps to explore this heritage in the Kinta Valley. Dope stuff like Kelly’s Castle and the TT5 Tin Dredge.

The best option is staying along the river in a budget place like Abbey by the River Hotel. It’s just outside old town. I just sent a few backpacker girls there. It always has a few young girls volunteering for a free weeks stay. Great sunset view from rooftop.

The other option is to stay in a boutique hotel along concubine lane inside old town. There aren’t many bars nearby. New town has a nightmarket. Old town is mostly local tourists and a few backpackers. Don’t expect much nightlife.

Outside town there are some huge caves with temple complexes inside. Some have views of you climb to the top of the limestone outcropping. I used grab to get to most of them.

You can connect to Cameron Highlands by bus. Endless tea fields, tourist traps, and a fun CIA connection. Make sure to visit the cloud forest and bohs tea plantation.

The long distance bus station is inconviently located way north of town along the expressway just before it cuts through the mountains to taiping.

Taiping is peninsular Malaysia’s rainiest place. Be careful not to get locked in the night zoo. Fun times!

Despite what everyone says (including the guidebook) Ipohs local bus station does have intercity bus connections. You wait a little longer but it’s less crowded. I used this option to connect to Taiping (an even less touristy Chinese mining town with some good food and attractions).

Overall I stayed a week in Ipoh. If you take day trips to places like Kuala Kangsar and the waterfalls around Gopeng there is a plethora of fun stuff to do.

Ipoh has some really great street art. There is a murals street in new town. Old town has half a dozen works hidden down alleys and on the sides of buildings. Way better than Penang’s retarded wire caricatures.
