Most places are cheaper for a month, so if you're planning on staying somewhere for 3 weeks, at $300/week, but the place is $600/month, what's stopping you from booking a month at the monthly rate, but only staying 3 weeks -- saving $300 in the process?

has anyone used air bnb in RIo in PEAK season???

i was checking it last week and even a room is like 70 dollars in zona sul....

If you wana rent a whole 1 bed apartment, not sure how much thats gonna cost. I ended up staying in hostel...

I honestly haven't seen great savings on airbnb. For monthly rentals, Craigslist seems to be where it's at. For just a couple days, hostels are a winner.

Just saying, for the price of a hostel in rio, you can have a whole 1 bed by yourself in other smaller cities...

I have rented a room in copacabana for 35 bucks a night using airbnb. Fuck rio im not going to pay big money for what is not worth the price.

Roosh, you're dead on. This is what I did as well. I found this all out as well after booking the initial two weeks. I paid almost the same for a month as I did my first two weeks. It definitely seems best to just book a couple nights and then speak with the owner to get a better price. Another one I've found that seems to be even cheaper than Airbnb (At least here in Colombia) is Compartoapto.com. Only thing is, it doesn't serve near as many places as airbnb.

staying in the favela ( mayve vidigal or rochina) might be a solution now. only thing is if you going in summer it might be hot.
can get a monthly studio in favela maybe for 500 reais.

Check out compartoapto.com. I would think they have cheaper prices on there. They do here in Colombia.

Does anyone have strategies (possibly out of books)when it comes to negotiating prices on these things.
I've gladly stay in places on airbnb and had longer than usual conversations with the owners about the cost of living.
Some people are able to rent their apartments for 3-4 times what they actually pay.

I plan to attempt to haggle them for monthly rent at a price slightly higher than average.
ex. Start off introducing yourself and complimenting their place( maybe saying you have been in the area before)
Then asking them if they are willing to offer it at a specific price.

Hey Random landlord,
My name is XXX
You have a wonderful apartment. I really like the style and location.
I'm looking to move to XXX soon.
Im wondering if you would be willing to offer the apartment at XXX at (This) amount of months

In my head I feel like this is a good way to start off a negotiation. But some of yall may be better versed in strategy

I have never negotiated the rate (I should have), but for my last rental, I asked to clean up the apartment every few days for free, and the host arranged that.

^ Negotiating will work only if the host is renting the room because he needs the income. Many Airbnb hosts do it for extra cash, and don't really need the money. But a significant number (think the stats are 1/3) are doing it to pay their rent.

As a host I have never negotiated, but some might. It's worth a try. Just ask. Source, your idea of complimenting to the host makes sense to me.

*edit - By the way, out of over 150 requests I've gotten for my xtra room, only two people have tried negotiating. With many host, there is a good chance no one has ever tried it, and you will surprise him by asking. It just may work.

I posted my strategy somewhere but in all European countries I visit, I tell them my budget straight off the bat which is normally around 50% or even less for what they are asking.

I've actually have been decently successful with offering them a lower cash amount.

The problem might be bad timing. People are greedy..A couple have messaged saying its high season -_- and they prefer to charge more.
Fuck that..there is no high season when renting for a month...Hotels have high seasons..not people

I message a few people in the area that I'm looking. I know that these owners would rather have some one paying something rather than no one paying nothing.

Say a flat is £1000 for a month, I'll message saying, 'Hi, I'm a regular visitor to Blahblah and I am looking for an accomodation for a month from date to date. I noticed your property and it may suit my needs, my budget is £350-£400, can you help?'

I get a reply back saying normally they'll do it for £550-£600 (varies one exchange rate, these europeans use euros when replying).

I'll reply back saying I can stretch my budget to £450 or £500 (depending on how much I actually want the flat/apartment as I'll have messaged 5/6) They'll accept that and then I'll pay them on arrival in their local currency rather than using airbnb.

I normally say 'my budget is' because then you're showing what you're able to pay, rather than what you 'offer'.

I've generally found that shared apartments are much more negotiable. Most of the time the renter is trying to help with rent and will take any reasonable offer.

When booking a full apartment for myself for an extended time, I've found it much more difficult to negotiate because these are second and third properties for the owner. The necessity for extra income is much less for these people and therefore you'll be less able to negotiate the price.

One word of advice: treat the AirBnB as you own. I've got a few stellar long term reviews from property owners and this has definitely added some credo to my below face value offer. Renters are willing to give me the benefit of the doubt once they realize they're dealing with a stable and respectful person.

Question for those who have used AirBNB to rent out their place?

How do you prevent someone from trashing the place or stealing the TV? I used airbnb as a renter only once, so I had a new account with no feedback when I rented. I don't see what the owner could've done if I left in the middle of the night and the TV was missing (in a country that's not covered by the Host guarantee).
