I never run a tab at the bar. First it turns into a clusterfuck when you get the bill. Most waitresses can't add. Second you have to be ready to leave in a seconds notice. Third if you do something stupid they have your card.

Every time I drink, I get smashed, like right now as I write this. Even if I tell myself before hand that I will control it it still happens. I never ever get hangovers or puke, but I've gotten close. Is there any actual way to limit myself to two or three drinks? I should just literally quit cold turkey? Because once I start drinking I'll end up having at least 6-7 drinks (usually vodka or Jell-O shots) and since I'm a lightweight (I think( I end up smashed and dancing and singing badly on the dancefloor. Obviously this is not conductive to swooping.

My suggestion if you want to just cut back is to first take a week to a month of not drinking at all (maybe go on a juice fast or something to detox too). This kind of resets your habits and allows you to get used to not being dependent on the behavior.

Then, when you start reintroducing it to your life again, you can start off with a clean slate and try a different approach by setting certain rules for yourself (minimum of nights a week, minimum drinks in a night, water between drinks, etc).

Probably even better if you force yourself to go out to the clubs even during your "alcohol break" so you can get used to being in that environment without being faded. Hang out and play pool, hit on girls, be a sober driver for your bros, or whatever.

Also gives you insight to how lame people come across when they're super faded.

If you drink as much as I do, the time away will give you so much mental clarity you didn't realize you were missing that it's insane. It gives you a minute to focus and reassess your direction in life, and even if you don't have a drinking problem at all, I personally think it's vital to exercise your willpower from time to time just to keep it in shape.

This reset approach may not work for everyone, but if you're a strong-willed person, you can pull it off.

Yes, I took a whole month off myself. I also continued to go to bars with friends, however I'll admit I'd only stay out til midnight usually.

Its one thing to be the only sober one in a chill lounge establishment when you can hold conversations with people. Its a whole different thing in darkly lit, loud music places (especially if you're not keen on dancing without alcohol). I found those venues and midnight+ to be hard to deal with sober.

Ya, I don't think there is a one size fits all approach to moderation in drinking. I'm like you in that I drink as long I think drinking will make me feel good, and after the first drink I always feel that.

However there is one curious thing that does limit my desire to drink. If I'm practicing chi-kung regularly I'm less likely to feel thirsty for booze.

I've been sober for about three years now, but struggled for years with an increasing drinking habit that eventually became an outright problem.

You might consider low dose naltrexone every evening. Four milligrams taken at about midnight or right before you go to sleep. You can read up on it; naltrexone is known to curb desire for addictive substances. I take it now for other reasons, and on the very occasional time that I have a glass of wine, I find I drink it too slow to get any real buzz, and only order one second glass max. Not out of conscious effort to limit my drinking, but out of lack of thirst for the booze.

I think most people naturally suffer from a touch of solipsism when it comes to being helpful for other peoples problems. Which is why they say only an alcoholic can counsel another alcoholic.

My pacing has significantly improved to the point where I can avoid hangovers or any ill-effects from drinking (except for a violent, alcohol scented shit some point the next morning). I make sure I let a drink last for at least 30-45 minutes before I get another, and I never alternate liquors anymore.

Ever Since I went on paleo diet I never get hangovers..it is unreal...I usually drink straight vodka as well...I think not eating sugar and carbs really helps in the Hangover department.....also only drink straight liqours....no sugary mixers....I've def had females respect me and take note when it came to drink orders as well...when you order a whiskey straight with no ice it gets their panties wet.

I've been going out 4-5 nights a week for the last 6 weeks and I haven't had a single drop of alcohol.

Personally, what does it for me is the desire to improve at game. I know that I can be a bit more confident and spontaneous when I drink. But then I don't feel any more powerful, proud of myself or self-actualized at the end of the night. The first few nights not drinking were a little brutal, but once I got past that I just got really used to not drinking.

It helped that I went out with wings for the first few times and was able to feel very comfortable socially even when I wasn't drinking, those first few times. Now, whether I'm out solo or with other people, I have no qualms about asking the bartender for water or when people point at my drink and ask why I'm not drinking.

So, my advice would be to realize what the cost of drinking is, to yourself, then just stop drinking for a week or two. Make sure you keep going out so you build up positive reference experiences that tell you you can go out and not drink and still have a good time. Then, after a couple weeks, you just build up momentum and don't want to go back.

I agree totally on drinking nothing but straight liquor. I'm still at the point where I can drink almost anything without much issue besides some gutrot but my best post-drinking mornings were always whenever I drank nothing but vodka or whiskey. I'm pretty sluggish after a night of beer, wine, or martinis, but I rise from bed like a champion after a night of nothing but vodka or whiskey.

BB's reset approach worked for me.

I had vaguely realized that drinking like a college freshman while in my mid-twenties was self-destructive, but after a month and a half of sobriety and MMA training, it was easy to see my drinking habits in perspective and ask myself what role I wanted alcohol to play in my life. I still drink quite a bit of wine, scotch, vodka, and occasionally beer, but it's in a more relaxed, casual way.

If you really struggle with trying to put a limit on your drinking on a night by night basis though, a longer break might be a good idea.

After hitting 45-50, drinking is almost a total negative except very, very rarely.

What is it you can 't do without alcohol that you can do with it? Conversation? learning?

About the one thing it does is makes being around drunk people less obnoxious-- answer don't be around drunk people.

I find now it takes me at least 4-7 days to really bounce back from drinking say 4-6 shots/glasses of wine etc.

Better more cultured chicks aren't drinking anyway, if that's the type you want.

I do grant ONE exception and that is early in getting to know a good chick that wants to drink also.

Otherwise

1) weight gain or interruption in gaining muscle
2) Dark circles under eyes
3) Depresses mood while the 4 day rebalance of neurotransmitters occurs
4) Memory worse
5) Chance of alienating non-drinking, higher class chicks.

I'm just better off not drinking at all except for very rare occasions- maybe once every 2 months.

I also am starting to shift my social life to people who want to do something. I looked around the last time I was in a bar, and what I saw was people holding cigarets, saying the same things they've said hundreds of times, and getting drunk.

I want to be talking to achievement oriented people in the arts, not wasting time sitting in a cloud of cigaret smoke.

What I do is take a few minutes to really think about my goals of the evening. I would say 95% of the time I am going out, whether it is with friends or alone, my goal is to meet and bang a girl. After six-ish drinks(total), I know that I will:

-Start to get tired without the aid of tons of caffiene
-Become anti-social
-Get a huge pulsating vein in my forehead

After ten, I wouldn't be able to bust a nut during a three-way with Mila Kunis and Alexandra Stan. Unfortunately, I'm more interested in 7-11 chili cheese dogs than pussy at that point anyway.

Obviously, this is counter-productive to my goal. I convince myself I am an IDIOT if I get blasted and then go out to meet girls, and that really helps me keep the optimal pace.

In my opinion, getting shit-dicked can still be worthwhile if the goal is to 1. celebrate something really awesome, 2. drink competively 3. get hammered with grandpa on Thanksgiving. In that case, you need to check out Forget Hangovers.

I don't think they are sold in stores, but HOLY SHIT. If you plan on drinking aggressively any time soon, go buy them online right now. You will feel like you just woke up from a nap all night, even 20 beers deep! and you will be ready to do a triathalon in the morning (just don't take the patch off until late afternoon the following day, or however long it takes you to lose a hangover). The only downside is the patches smell like concentrated piss, which is very noticeable no matter where you stick it on your body. But since your not going out to meet women, who cares??

Damn some of you guys are talking about 4-6 days to recover from a few drinks? Nuerotransmitters and depressed mood? I might feel all that shit after an 8 ball of cocaine but certainly not a night of hard drinking. 1 day resting after a really barn burner drinking bender and Im good to go.
