The Best Songwiter in Spanish
In English, it would be the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, etc and too many others to argue.
In Spanish, the lead singer from Mana is the best, and no one even close.

Maná is the best you got?

Idk who the "best" is I don't think there is any real equivalent of the Beatles in Spanish music.

Marco Antonio Solis

He writes his own songs and could sing good too.

Also Luis Miguel writes and sings his own songs

Love this song. Always heard at this Salsa Spanish bar I would go to and never knew the name.

I do not know if there is a 'best' Spanish songwriter of all time, say, as The Beetles or something. But for me, Spanish music has always had more flavor, passion, and emotion than English music.

One example is Paco de Lucia. I think more of a master of the Spanish tradition of Flamenco rather than more of a songwriter, but a songwriter, nonetheless.

Salsa music often has the best lyrics for me. It's weird from an Anglo perspective that this dance music often talks about such heavy themes, like this one.

RE: The Best Songwiter in Spanish
There was a similar thread to this a while back asking for your favorite Spanish music.

Maná does have a bunch of hits, but their music is so damn soft and inoffensive. Not exactly nuanced either, I don't know, something about Maná just makes me not like them. Labios Compartidos probably has something to do with it.

Anyway, it depends on the genre. Props on that Fruko reference, I think their music is danceable as fuck. They come a close second at salsa for me. First place is Héctor Lavoe:

https://soundcloud.com/ebastiananchezanc...co-de-ayer

With Periódico de ayer, El cantante, Mi gente, Calle luna calle sol, Juanito Alimaña, etc... respectable. Although I choose him just because they're also danceable, he has a good voice, and I'm... biased. Because if we were being honest, lyrically, no one tops Rubén Blades, it's not even close.

http://grooveshark.com/#!/s/Amor+Y+Control/4loNjK?src=5

Amor y control, Plástico, Patria, Maestra vida, Privilegio. Lyrically, absolutely no contest.

If we move to bachata and merengue, Juan Luis Guerra takes it by landslide:

http://grooveshark.com/#!/s/Ni+gara+En+B...OG5U?src=5

Great combination of lyrical meaning and actual flow. Dude was a genius, Niágara en bicicleta, Palomita blanca, Me enamoro de ella, El costo de la vida, Burbujas de amor, Frío frío.

In hip-hop, I have to go with Calle 13. Cumbia de los aburridos, Baile de los pobres, Tango del pecado, Atrévete-te-te.

In spanish rock, I have to go with Gustavo Cerati/Soda Stereo: Verbo carne, Rio Babel, Corazón delator, Ángel eléctrico, En la ciudad de la furia.

One last shout out to Buena Vista Social Club, specifically Candela, which features this gem of a lyric especially relevant to the forum:

BVSC Wrote:La mujer cuando se agacha
Se le abre el entendimiento
La mujer cuando se agacha
Se le abre el entendimiento
Y el hombre cuando la mira
Se le para el pensamiento
De ti me gusta una cosa
Sin que me cueste trabajo

Who can relate... basically the guy's saying, discretely and creatively: "When the woman leans over, she opens up. The man stops thinking. I like one thing about you, and it doesn't cost me any work."

In your player days, sometimes you'll come across unfortunate girls you have trouble getting it up for. It truly feels like work just to get your nut off. This song reminds me of both the times I've had to coax my dick to finish inside some fugly chick, and also the other times where I've had a glass cutting boner resulting in me launching my seed to the other side of the room. All said poetically, to the point where it's impossible to translate to English without losing the meaning. Now that's a song, mothafuckas.

Mana is like the McDonalds of Mexican Music, Mexicans think they're a joke.

I would go with Arjona or El Komander Anthrax.

Hahaha, just fucking around.

I second Luis Miguel too. A lot of eurasian bitches ask me about him.

Juan Luis Guerra, Ruben Blades, Robi Draco Rosa, Ricardo Arjona, etc.

Most singers don't write their own songs, so most songwriters (even if they have a few hits) remain anonymous.

RE: The Best Songwiter in Spanish
The late Chilean folksinger Victor Jara produced some really great folk music that can make its point even if you can't understand the lyrics.

Jara was murdered for political reasons in '73 -- he was a left-winger and when America backed a right wing coup in Chile, soldiers from the new regime killed him and hundreds others. It's unjust incidents like this, by the way, that remain lodged in the consciousness of people, which is why they'll often distrust anything right wing-related.

I learned about Jara through a Clash song, "Washington Bullets," which is from the "Sandinista!" album. He was sort of a Spanish-language Phil Ochs from what I gather.

Overall in Mexican music Id Say Marco Antonio Solis

There's also this guy named Fato who writes songs for Pepe Aguilar

And I think Mi Compa Regulo Caro has potential to become a pretty good songwriter not just in the regional mexican music world

And cannot leave this without mentioning

Ill add more later.. theres a lot of colombians and argentinians..
