Shit, I hope he didn't get on that flight.

It's looking like a real possibility that my friend was on that flight. I have made several calls and sent a few emails. There is no response so far. He should have been home by now.

So far I have looked through some of the ethnic German victims on the plane. His name hasn't shown up which is a good sign so far but 72 Germans were on that plane and I've only seen at least 20.

I will wait a few more days to see what happens.

Some good news. It turns out he wasn't on that flight. He just gave me a call.

Huge relief.

RE: No Survivors as Germanwings Airbus Carrying 150 Crashes in French Alps
An excerpt from the news saying that a cell phone video, found in the wreckage, captured the final moments of the flight (no actual video was released, only described):

Quote:Paris Match and Bild obtained a video taken during the final seconds of the fated Germanwings flight 4U9525 and found among the wreckage by a source close to the investigation. Its origin – a cell phone – was clear. The scene was so chaotic that it was hard to identify people, but the sounds of the screaming passengers made it perfectly clear that they were aware of what was about to happen to them. One can hear cries of “My God” in several languages. Metallic banging can also be heard more than three times, perhaps of the pilot trying to open the cockpit door with a heavy object. Towards the end, after a heavy shake, stronger than the others, the screaming intensifies. Then nothing.

Heart wrenching and stomach churning.

That is pretty sad. I don't want to be a dick, but maybe I have become too jaded. But the thought "I wonder if someone took a selfie" popped in my head. I feel like I need to defend myself and say I make a lot of positive and supportive posts also. A little ashamed it popped in my head.

Agree with this. Hopefully they'd be able to get something useful out of the evidence. If it were me though, the only thing on my mind would be trying to send a last goodbye text to my mother.

When you think about it, the initial supposition that the passengers only knew about their fate during the last seconds was always bullshit. A320, low cost carrier means single class no partitions, less than half the cabin length of a 747-400. On a plane of that size how do you expect a pilot yelling and banging on the cockpit door for almost 10 minutes to escape notice?

A terrible way to go. I hope any footage aboard that flight never gets leaked.

RE: No Survivors as Germanwings Airbus Carrying 150 Crashes in French Alps
I never knew this until today, but last year the co-pilot of an Ethiopian Airlines flight pulled the same stunt, except without crashing into a mountain. The co-pilot locked the cockpit and hijacked the airplane when the captain left to use the toilet. He seemingly was looking to take asylum in Switzerland and this was his way of having his demands met.

I don't recall ever hearing about this in the media when it occurred. And I'm still not seeing any mention of it as the Germanwings crash is discussed.

It's a shame this incident didn't spark talks among the airlines of ensuring at all times there's two people inside of the cockpit. Link below.

I am truly amazed that anything in that cell phone survived the impact at 700 Km per hour against a granite mountain. Must be a Nokia!

Quote:The Germanwings co-pilot suspected of deliberately crashing his plane into the Alps had disclosed an earlier bout of depression, Lufthansa has said.

The airline, which owns Germanwings, said last week that Andreas Lubitz had taken a break from flight school training, but refused to say why.

It has now shared emails from 2009 which show Lubitz told instructors he had suffered from "severe depression".

Quote:Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr previously said that the company was not aware of anything that could have driven the co-pilot to crash the Airbus A320.

"He was 100% fit to fly without any restrictions or conditions," he told reporters.

Quote:It has now emerged, as part of the airline's internal research, that Lubitz had sent information about his depressive episode to the Lufthansa flight school in Bremen, when he resumed training after an interruption of several months.

RE: No Survivors as Germanwings Airbus Carrying 150 Crashes in French Alps
Quote:Black Box Data Confirms Alps Crash Deliberate
The news comes after it emerged co-pilot Andreas Lubitz had searched online for information about suicide and cockpit doors.Data from the second black box recovered from the Germanwings plane wreckage has confirmed the co-pilot crashed the jet deliberately.

"A first reading shows that the pilot in the cockpit used the automatic pilot to descend the plane towards an altitude of 100ft (30m)," said the French BEA crash investigation office in a statement.

"Then, several times during the descent, the pilot changed the automatic pilot settings to increase the aircraft's speed."The latest information appears to confirm the theory that co-pilot Andreas Lubitz intentionally flew into the French Alps, killing all 150 people on board.

Authorities found the second black box, which contains technical flight data, on Thursday after a nine-day search in difficult mountain terrain.

Data from the first black box, which records conversations in the cockpit, suggested Lubitz, 27, locked the captain out and then set the Airbus A320 on a collision course.

It smashed into the mountains at 430mph, instantly killing everyone on board. Half were German and more than 50 from Spain.

It emerged on Thursday that Lubitz had searched online for information about suicide and cockpit doors.

At this point there's still a few remaining parties in denial/conspiracy theorists trying to make the data set fit their narrative, but they are irrelevant. It's actually embarrassing watching flight professionals and other well read individuals on airliners.net or pprune try to hamster the history to fit their emotions. The facts surrounding the flight were suspicious from the start and the raw data from flightradar24 publicly available on day 2 strongly suggested a deliberate act on the flight deck. It was and still is improbable to suggest some sort of accidental circumstance/freak mechanical failure was responsible for this:

FlightRadar24 Wrote:[Image: CBBkayoUcAAIahq.png]

Between 09:30:52 and 09:30:55 we can see that the autopilot was manually changed from 38,000 feet to 100 feet and 9 seconds later the aircraft started to descend, probably with the "open descent" autopilot setting.
The reason why the selected altitude is 96ft is that least significant bit for altitude setting equals 16 ft, and we suspect that you can’t set autopilot to 0000 altitude, so the minimum would be 100ft down rounded to 96ft in binary representation in BDS40h register.
Any comments or thoughts about this?

Playback: http://www.flightradar24.com/data/flight...5/#5d42675

This data has also been handled over to BEA 2 days ago.

Some have clutch their pearls about the fact that information was released quickly, as opposed to typical accident investigations which can take many months just to release a preliminary report. Besides the fact that this was no typical accident and incriminating information was publicly available almost from the start, who here thinks it would have been a good idea for officials to keep mum on what they knew to be true? Does the transponder interrogative data and the CVR recording somehow become admissible evidence six months, a year or two in the future, but not right now? Should we wait until then to change flight deck procedures or modify them as soon as we're aware there is a probable vulnerability? Imagine if it became known that investigators knew this was deliberate for months and withheld vital information from the public, airlines and pilots, information that could prevent a repeat crash. As soon as the CVR readout matched the other available facts, it would have been criminally irresponsible for them to keep the findings to themselves.

RE: No Survivors as Germanwings Airbus Carrying 150 Crashes in French Alps
Quote:With reports that Lubitz apparently ignored those warnings, there are new calls from aviation experts to develop and deploy enhanced crash avoidance software that could take control of an aircraft away from a pilot and steer the plane to a safe altitude.

The technology would work in a fashion similar to crash avoidance technology already used in automobiles. If a pilot is incapacitated or ignores audible warnings, the plane's flight guidance software could take over and plot a course to a safe altitude‎. In cars, these avoidance systems sometimes deploy brakes or slow a car down to a safer speed, and help maintain safe distances from other vehicles.

Former Department of Transportation Inspector General Mary Schiavo says pilots, regulators and the traveling public have, so far, not bought into claims that computers can do it better. "For any situation where you are relieving the pilot's control of their plane, there has been pushback not only from the pilots, but from airlines. There are some sectors that believe that ultimately the pilot must maintain overall control of the plane and that that is your best bet for a safe flight."

However, she adds, in the case of the Germanwings crash, "this technology, I believe, would have saved the flight. Not only would it have saved this flight and the Germanwings passengers, it would also save lives in situations where it is not a suicidal, homicidal pilot. It has implications literally for safer flight across the industry."

http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/02/europe/fra...f=obinsite

You gotta love these idiots who sit at desks for a living trying to promote knee-jerk reaction-induced ideas. Software that could prevent a pilot from drilling an airplane into the ground??? What happens when he turns the engines off? The plane will use magic and sunshine to pull up and avoid the mountain?
