I have several family friends that lived in the Gulf for a decade before immigrating to the US and Canada and to a person they all despise that part of the world with every fiber of their being. The huge, exploited, slave-like foreign labour force that built the city, the slothful local population that considers itself above the law and is truly more or less above it, the religiosity of the area undercut by the huge strain of hypocrisy, the lack of culture, the rampant materialism, etc...

This is a place that doesn't produce anything, not even lightbulbs. A place like Dubai is really a third wold place with first world packaging.

The family friends would talk about third world maids (Filipinas and others) that would get hurt and killed if overspoiled local children fell or got themselves into accidents the way that children normally do. Forget the rape and sexual harassment these maids suffered in the homes of the locals. It's not like they would actually get listened to...and often their passports would be confiscated by their employers.

I believe Indonesia, Ethiopia, India and the Philippines banned or placed restrictions on their women going to work in the UAE, mainly as nannies and domestic workers, after decades of abuse suffered by their women. Imagine how bad the abuse can be for poor countries to actually ban/restrict their people from going to work there.

Our family friends would talk about the local men travelling to places like Yemen, Thailand, India and other poor places to buy the sexual services of little children (under 10 years old). And unlike in the West where are these severe repercussions for indulging in the harm of children, there are absolutely no restraints or consequences for these people.

To be fair, I also heard of US servicemen having sex with children, including toddlers, in places like the Philippines due to poverty and lack of consequences (let me put in this disclaimer: obviously not all US servicemen, and to be fair I heard of this happening in decades past).

Friends from uni who were involved in human rights groups moved to Dubai, a place that doesn't really know the meaning of the term, without a blink of an eye in order to make money. The domestic workers and labour workers, despite the horrendous conditions under which they would work, still want to go to places like Dubai in order to make money. All sorts of women, including Russian, Chinese, Ethiopian and all flavours of the world, go to places like Dubai to sell the asset between their legs and make money.

A couple of the wives of our family friends ventured to work while they were living there in the 80s and 90s and the level of real sexual harassment, including offers of gifts and money if they slept with their bosses, was so high that they dropped out of the workforce to stay home because they had no other recourse. The husbands' inclination to kick the shit out of the bosses could never be indulged as the laws are structured to always favour the locals.

I never really thought of myself as jaded but I must be because the concept of people doing degrading things for money doesn't really shock me, including young, pretty white women doing nasty things with wealthy Arabs for a payday. This. The thing that terrifies me the most that this news not even surprised me. I reached the point where nothing shock me about people. Reading a lot of books about history helped to reach this point also.

Met with a friend of mine who works for an Arab airline yesterday, she was in town and I brought this up.

According to her at least 30% of the air-hostesses are involved. They do it for the gifts, the money and materials and they have all these inside jokes regarding this. A while back someone I knew went to visit Dubai. He described it as a Lego set built on a sand. It is all artificial. He also made it seem like they wouldn't last forever due to the elements and rushed construction. Not sure about that part.

In the Arab world, the Gulf states have a bad reputation. I can tell you this for sure. Egyptians, Palestinians, and Syrians go there to work and make money, but that's about it.
