I don't think he will be back in 6 months.
It's not like he made a one off mistake.
The guy had a history of lying and exaggerating in order to make a story sound better and himself look good.
The only reason he wasn't fired outright is because NBC would be on the hook for paying off his 50 Million USD contract.
Given the amount of money, they are gambling on the long shot that most people won't care about him being a liar. His favorability ratings have taken a dramatic hit, and people will not forget (they will be given plenty of reminders by rivals). If he even gets in front of the camera again on Nightly News, he will be off the air in less than a week if his ratings suck, which they will.

The guy makes $10 million a year or some shit to look good and to be credible. He failed at the latter, which would have been incredibly easy to avoid - just don't make shit up.

It's funny how other high paid members of the MSM are coming to his defense ( see yesterday's David brooks column in the ny times in which he preaches we need to forgive Williams and that his critics are barbarians).

I say fuck that. If any of us normal blokes fuck up on a key aspect of our job we are shown the door. I don't see why these highly paid and connected guys should have lower standards. In fact, given how much they are paid I think their standards should be higher.

Unfortunately for NBC, Brian Williams is a white male so they had no leeway to let him off easy.

Had it been a woman or other minority they could've rationalized the criticism as the old 'patriarchy' piling on to destroy its enemy.

MSNBC's ratings are also at an all-time low. Despite their heavy 'diversity' no one is watching their bullshit. The 11pm replay of O'Reilly factor gets more viewers than any primetime msnbc show

Still, Brian Williams crushes OReilly by like 5 million viewers every night. I did some googling and cannot see any comparisons between NBC and Fox, I guess they only compare pure cable news... MSNBC vs Fox or CNN vs HLN etc...

Then again, OReilly isn't even top dog at Fox anymore, the delightful Megyn Kelly is leading the Roger Ailes Cash Machine now...


Edit- I guess the comparison between Oreilly and Williams is unfair, apparently cable news channels are 'speciality' so people with only basic cable can't watch it?

The whole mainstream NEWS system is a lie. They're highly partisan and 100% US-centric so we never hear "the other side" of the story, only the side that will propogate and support the hegemonic agenda set forth by the elites. The mainstream media is by and large no different than Rollingstone in terms of credibility. Now if this were the Washington Post or NYTimes that be one thing, but Brian Williams is not a representative of what I shall call "truth" and "fact." He's a celebrity that talks about sensationalist and biased bullshit. Celebrities are not the paramount of honesty and truth.

I can't believe that Brian Williams was NOT pressured by many executives to be as sensationalist as possible without going into tabloid territory. Of course he's going to exaggerate. That's what wins viewers, that's what garners sympathy, that's what pulls in the advertising dollars.

Do you think Brian Williams was the only one in on this? Nah...what about the camera man, what about his producer, what about the entire team that is there with him and knows exactly the point of the exagerration. Did they quit out of disappointment with Brian? Hell no! They stayed on because they saw the validation and prestige that came with it.

If we're going to essentially fire a newscaster for embellishing and exaggerating, we should fire our presidents and politicians for lying to us all during their campaigns to get elected and then doing the exact opposite of what they promised. That's a far greater damage to society because those are the ones who really affect change and alter the course of society.

The rest of the media will pile on to try and hurt the NBCNEWS brand. The pressure is coming from media to take down competition, the media will keep this going to keep heat on NBC to can Williams. But likley NBC is in a tough spot as its going to be expensive ($40-$50 million) to make Williams walk away.

But this is all NBCUniversal/COMCAST's own doing. As I noted the two women at the helm have driven the division off a cliff as they attempted to shill and peddle Brian Williams who is a boring news robot into a cross-platform celebrity. The corporate tactic was to shill and crossover many of their entities to push a element of convergence and offer non-strop cross promotion potential. So in attempting to create Brian Williams the Celebrity they left this dude unchecked. Since he is a boring loser dude has to make shit up. He wasn't cut from the same cloth like Dan Rather, Brokaw, Jennings, etc who would of had real stories of hamming it up with old Presidents or a Saudi King back in the day. Williams was always just a news whore, following orders, waiting for Brokaw to leave so he could take over his chair, he never tried to forge his own news resume the old school way and now he is paying for it.

But of course Williams will BS about the Seal Team 6 story because that story was a folly to begin with.

Years ago i was studying photojournalism and the stories i read about even minor photographers were some of the most mindblowing things one could read about. Take "Dispatches" by Michael Herr for example. This Williams shit could come anywhere near to holding a candle to what the media guys back then were doing in way more dangerous situations.
