(12-01-2014 10:31 PM)Days of Broken Arrows Wrote:  It always bewildered me that the people who purported to care the most about social issues are the rudest to their fellow man. When I started in journalism I was crestfallen to find out the people whose work I admired were ill-mannered and sometimes just nasty.

Conservatives are often the opposite: they'll trash humanity, but show the most humanity when it comes to inter-personal relations.

Progressives loves humanity in the abstract rather then the concrete. That's why they'll endlessly wax poetic about the working class, the black guy getting held down by the man, the pansexual furry even if they would never want any of these people as their neighbor. I think this goes back to how left leaning people tend to be more idealistic about humanity - actually seeing any of these people in the flesh and blood would destroy the pedestal-ized image they have constructed in their mind of what these people should be like as opposed to what they are actually are.

Personally, I've been cut off multiple times by people who while weren't friends were friendly acquaintances over difference in political beliefs and every single time it was always from a progressive. Also, almost every single person was a female which lends credence to how girls take everything personal and are unable to separate an attack on their thinking from an attack on themselves. I've yet to experience the same from any of my more conservative friends.

As for conservatives being more humane when it comes to personal relationships, you know the old cliche about how some some right wing racist when accused of being racist will respond with "Hey I got black friends!". I actually know people who are straight up racist - not in the they'll make un-PC jokes way but in they'll actually come straight out and say they dislike black people - and at the same time they'll have absolutely no problem with hanging out with black people. Compare this to the progressives I know who will have no problem cutting out friends and associates if they just share the wrong article on Facebook or utter the wrong statement in private conversation. I know personally that as much as I'll rail on and on about Tumblr feminists and other batshit people I have never, ever cut let it get in the way of my relationships even though a great deal of the people I know do indeed fall into the demographic.

No. The millennials are hugely passive-aggressive. Social justice is simply mob violence enacted behind the safety of a screen. The potential for social and economic destruction is just as great.

They still use the threat of violence to get their way. This is why they want the state to have more power.

The irony being that the more power the state has, the easier the millennials are driven, like cattle.

I'm not concerned about the great herd mass of millennials who don't think independently and who just follow each other off the cliff. I'm worried about the one or two psychopaths in the mob, of which there have always been a handful throughout human history, who use those lemming tendencies to their own best advantage and often to great bloodshed. Nothing's more important in our constant-spin-cycle world than people who think for themselves, who don't follow the herd. Put another way: slaves have their decisions made for them; free men decide for themselves.

Video does a good job summarizing some of the SJW and second guessing guilt issues discussed in this thread.

I'm sure they didn't plan it this way, but the actors make it even more realistic by having very punchable faces

I agree with the pussiness being related to socioeconomic status. In my personal experience the wealthy kids I knew were afraid of getting dirty or injured. Contrary to the children of the working class who loved to fish, hunt, and box. It took a lot of coaxing to get the wealthy kids to do these same activities. Also as for the passive aggressiveness I have to say what are you supposed to do when your parents are telling you it's ok to fight to defend yourself but at the same time schools are punishing anyone involved in fights there is no good or bad in the schools eyes. Your whole life you are told in order to make good money you have to go to college. You are also told that fights and disciplinary marks will prevent you from being accepted into college. You really gunna risk a fight and settle things "the old fashioned way" after being threatened with no future? If your not an idiot then fuck no. Thats how I used to think but now that I am an adult I've learned to take no disrespect and that violence or at least the threat of it is the quickest problem solver for knuckleheads (most of the time...theres always someone you can't beat physically).

I'm a millenial. I roll with various types of thugs and hoodlums even though I'm not one myself because for the most part they're the only men in my age group around here who aren't some type of faggot or pussy. Other than the athletes (I ball myself.)

Oh and by the way if you know what you're doing millenials are easy to influence. Can't say no for some reason. I had this flaw myself but caught it several years back.

It's got more to do with liking your life and feeling like you have something to lose. A lot of people don't want to end up with life changing injuries from weapons, or in prison, which is why they don't resort to violence over petty disrespect issues.

There's also an element of insecurity, like if you watch the prank videos such as do you even lift, or telling somebody they look stupid, the cool people usually laugh it off, or run with it, whereas the less socially calibrated types get aggressive.

I hope the young kids don't take this advice.

It wasn't meant to be advice just an introspection. I was bullied throughout school and I was pushed to the edge so I started fighting back. In life being bullied by people you see on a daily bases is a shitty way to live. A bully won't respond to being tattled on, they respond to violence. If I am out having a good time and someone decides to be a dick then I ignore it because I will probably never see them again. Try ignoring "petty disrespect" day to day from the same people everyday and see if it doesn't add on each day. It's easy to brush off a stranger but not coworkers or classmates.

As a parent I can suggest one reason for Millennial behavior: a generation of parents attempting to use only positive reinforcement.

Positive reinforcement is fine, but it must be provided intermittently.

Bad behaviors are quickly eliminated with consistently applied negative reinforcement.

I've had parents tell me that they feel bad for even yelling at their kids. They are afraid their kids will reject them. It boggles my mind the weakness the parents project. No wonder the kids come out so insecure.

RE: The Butthurt Chronicles: Millenial edition
I was talking with a Marine Corps Staff Sergeant for my OCS interview and I think he summed up my millennial generation perfectly. He said, "Son, your generation lacks resilience."

I told him I honestly couldn't disagree at all. I think the word resilience sums everything that has been said here perfectly. If something goes wrong, we aren't taught to change it. We aren't taught to fight back. We just cry about it until mommy and daddy make the bad things go away. We roll over and cry in the face of adversity. We have no struggles. Our country isn't wartorn; most of us don' t live in poverty. We are two generations away from the frugal and determined "Greatest Generation" and have decayed accordingly. As a direct result, we don't know the most basic of survival skills, have shitty bonds with our siblings since we have little hardships to share as a family, and can't cope with the most basic of setbacks. Millennials are not taught to persevere. We are the first generation to have access to tools of mass narcissism. We can catch our entire lives on camera and gain validation from thousands of people we barely know. Me, My, I. Everything revolves around us. Thus, we have no resilience.

RE: The Butthurt Chronicles: Millenial edition
It's not just a Marine Corps Staff Sergeant saying it. Plenty of child psychologists -- Michael Carr-Gregg among them -- say so as well. It derives fundamentally from parents wanting to remove all obstacles from their kids' lives, make their worlds entirely "safe" both physically and psychologically. You're never given any challenges, never allowed to fail, never given an objective standard of right versus wrong or pass versus fail. And this desire for "safety", rather like underarm deodorant, is to a large extent created and driven by corporations.

...Yes, underarm deodorant. The only reason it exists is because the company that made the first one literally created and publicised a problem that did not exist: ads began to appear asking if people "suffered" from "body odour." Before then, nobody gave a fuck and nobody noticed whether your armpits smelled. The entire "problem" was created in order to sell deodorant.

A similar thing drives child "safety". To which generation except hyper-paranoid parents of the 21st century could you sell kneepads for babies to wear while they're crawling around the floor before they can walk?

RE: The Butthurt Chronicles: Millenial edition
I am pretty shocked how emotionally weak these guys are. I think being raised without a strong male influence also adds to it.

But man they are such pussies. Guys just 10 years younger seem to melt so fast. They talk all badass because they were raised to think they were perfect their whole lives. But sometimes I do want them to taste their own blood so they can learn some humility and how to shut the fuck up.

Out of nowhere they will tell you stuff like what they think you should do or behave but you say one joke to them about themselves and they fold.

I think what is worse though is they may go around projecting how badass they are but deep inside they know they are weak. Which I think is petty funny.

They spend more time talking about life than living it. And without tough experiences and the ability to handle crisis and pain, how can you form deeper meaningful friendships? I laugh at the fuckers who wake up one day and realize they have no friends because they never sacrificed for anyone else. Because all they did was leech off others and rambled about their lives without taking much interest in others.

Edit: Also I sense that they are constantly seeking emotional validation. It is like a drug. They need more and more of it to get the same happy feeling. So even the most minor negative event can really throw them into a tailspin.

This guy does not know how to do anything and I mean any-fucking-thing. I've been teaching him how to use a broom and mop but after two weeks he still can't do it for some reason. Now it's turned into entertainment..

18 y.o. son of a friend of mine. Wanted help with surfboard racks. I showed him a design. Told him what items to get from Home Depot. He went, got confused, and left without getting anything.

His mother went to the store and got the stuff for him.

No wonder he couldn't do anything for himself.

Oh fucking christ i've had the same experience. Like having to be handling things in a "Step 1-This is a broom, you hold it like this and sweep" "Step 2-This is called a dustpan" etc, etc. You know you are in trouble when you have to go step by step to instruct someone in the proper use of a mop and how to go about changing the water.

This is not rocket science but goddamn imight as well be MIT physics the way i've had to teach a lot of youngsters recently.

Using things like a broom or a mop should be completely intuitive. Nobody should need to show one how to use them unless they've got some kind of mental disability.

You would think so but it's not the case any more.

Also the dude broke the mop. How you ask? The tard was taking the mop head off to clean it and broke the plastic screw that tightens the mop insert by tightening it the wrong way.

Are you sure he wasn't just being lazy and lied to get her in there to do his job for nothing? He's either clever or a complete retard.

Anyway, I don't work with many fellow millennials at the moment but I did when I worked at Target years ago. Most of the people I worked with there were pretty productive but they came from poor backgrounds. My coworkers were mostly poor latinos, poor blacks, and poor whites. They worked pretty hard and we all put up with a lot of shit from older customers. If you ever want to work on your inner game and learn how to let shit roll off your back then I suggest working at a job where you're the general public's bitch. You either toughen up or you lose your job. I've been threatened by psychotic homeless dudes, cursed at by the demented elderly, shit on by boomers, and I wouldn't trade any of those experiences for anything.

In truth, the most assholish customers were typically middle and upper class boomers. I don't know what it is about some from that generation but they always felt the need to rub how much better they think they are in your face. I think it might have to do with them growing up pampered in a post-WWII America.

I think it just depends on what the person's background is. Someone who's working poor and trying (legally) to get out of that situation will probably be a pretty hard worker. Someone who is comfortably middle class or upper middle class is probably not going to work as hard unless they were raised right.
