By the way, the girl who wrote that article is a Millennial, and pretty cute.

Seems like the comments are turned off on her blog post. I am curious what people were bitching about in the comments.

I can agree with that but that doesn't stop a Millenial from trying to be different than other Millenials. What's done is done as far as the parenting part, like all of us of any age or generation, we choose how we go forward.

Edit1: I get it, some parents are absolute shit. I know this sounds weird, but I do think parents do the best they can for their children. Now the best they can do, may not be, from an outsiders perspective, very good at all. It is just that in their minds it is the optimal choice in that moment/each moment.

Edit2: Yes, parents raised these Millenials but there is a lot of feedback from society about behavior, it is now up to Millenials, like each of us regardless of age and generation, to take feedback and do something with it. Doing nothing with it, is action also. But at some point when a realization is made "oh I am very sensitive", "oh I am passive aggressive" "oh I am entitled, I think I deserve everything without doing any work", then in a way, the problem is no longer your parents it is you. It is like when a person recognizes they have an addiction, at that point they can continue to be an addict or they can seek help. Yes, I am imagine it is hard. But is life meant to be easy? Or a person can just dig in and double down on victimhood, but man, what life is that?

We all have some journey/some struggle we are on. What may seem on the outside is an easy life, I am sure on the inside that person has struggle. What we must not do as men, is bog ourselves down with the negative energy. When most of our energy is caught up with negative, we have less energy to work on the good stuff in our lives.

What is the motivation for this opinion?

Do you think it applies in general to members of this forum as well?

I am curious because I am at the tail end of the boomer generation, and generally try to relate to others as I find them rather than based on their age.

When I get frustrated with Millennials as a group from time to time it is not because of specific qualities they have, but because of how they act towards me in my dealings with them.

It seems like they have assigned a role for me in any situation and aren't particularly interested in who I am or what I have to say. If I don't identify the role they have assigned me, and immediately accommodate myself to it, they freak out or get angry or dismissive.

Consequently, my frustration with Millennials doesn't come from feeling superior because I am older, or somehow wiser. It comes when my patience and good will is exhausted, and I am just tired of trying.

Funnily enough, it reminds me of when I was a kid and tried to talk with my parents friends, only to find myself ignored, dismissed, or corrected by someone who didn't know what they were talking about.

Sometimes, joking around with myself, I think:

"I hate old people, and young people are the new old people."

I am only at the beginning stages of working this idea out, but it seems to me that Boomers and Millennials have a lot more in common as demographic groups than either would like to admit, and that a Millennial is kind of a Boomer 2.0.

Anyone feeling me here?
Both groups were spoiled brats.
The difference now is the boomers grew in an era of endless opportunities. Those opportunities are fucking over. DONE. I interviewed along side 12+ people for my job and it was an interview for 1 slot. This is the norm. The millennials cannot compete. It is against their worldview. They must be handed the best opportunities right now or the world needs to change. Our economy is musical chairs and the chairs are getting pulled out every year. It is going to get much more shittier as time goes on. The current generation of school age children is gonna be really fucked when they hit their 20's!!

Hang in there, Sooth. For the record, I thought the majority of my Gen X peers were losers too.

However, identifying stereotypical perceptions of your generation gives you a huge advantage over the herd, so I suggest you dispassionately read criticisms without feeling personally attacked. Identify the stereotypes associated with your generation, then be the opposite. When Gen X was labelled lazy and apathetic, I made sure to be driven and passionate. If they actually nail one of your weak points, you know what to work on to rise above the crowd.

That being said, the current waves of Feminism and Social Justice have too much in common with 90's Gen X Political Correctness and Social Activism for my generation not to be equally-culpable. Note this previous post of mine:

80's - 90's Progressive Culture

I was at the front line of the 80's Punk Inclusivity Wars, so Anita Sarkeesian and Leigh Alexander are familiar Agents of Change spouting the same old dreary arguments. As such, this crap isn't unique to Millennials: I think the difference is more Social Media has amplified the whining.

You'll be fine, mate. You'll work towards your goals so in 20 years you'll be complaining about 'kids these days!' yourself - no matter how much you swear you won't.

I knew he was going to do this because I told him I was going to have him wash and wax an old classic car that's been sitting under trees for a year today. Fear of having to work was just too much for him.

Maybe this is just my Millenial blood speaking, but if I was at a low end job and my boss started asking me to do personal errands like wash and wax his hobby car, I'd probably bail out too. I hated that shit when I was working hourly jobs. I'm an employee, I'm there to man cash registers or clean tables or whatever, and I'm not there to be the boss's personal servant. You want to treat me like one, you can find someone else.
It's not that the work's beneath me; I've cleaned up my share of vomit, filthy bathrooms, and all that other nasty stuff and it's never bothered me. I've frozen my ass off spending hours in below-freezing storage lockers, and I still have a scar on my hand from where I ripped it open on a piece of jagged metal attached to a poorly maintained food prep machine. Didn't bitch about that, either.

I just hate the idea that the 6 or 7 bucks an hour you're paying me makes me obligated to be your personal bitch. I'd rather go find another job.

You got the wrong end of the stick mate, El Mech deals motors. Washing and waxing would be the first item on the job description.

I see where you're coming from though. But to my mind, if you've that sort of attitude then you'd better be prepared to put your money where your mouth is and go self employed. Also, ever consider that if you showed willing the boss might treat you a little better? At least give him the chance before you bail. My guys do personal errands for me, they do it without bitching and if they do a good job they get a little extra cash.

For what it's worth, I'm a Millenial (I guess, 1988) and I employ millenials. El Mech's experiences are by no means atypical. My buddy in foresty has the same problem. Many haven't got the brains or the brawn to be any good.

I was born in 1987. With only my most current boss being a fellow millennial, I have to say that I think assuming the best intention out of employers is for suckers. Only three out of my (around 12) jobs have given me dignified treatment after laboring for each vigorously. As a millennial, I've come to expect every jobs to either pay a fixed rate well below the quality of labor given(just look at the pay rate for medics) or to be treated like a dog to keep my job because they'll give it to illegal immigrants/a temp service with immediacy.

I'll throw in a disclaimer that many of my jobs were taken for sake of trying out new careers to see what I could learn while being paid. I didn't have any concerns or children at the time. For the lower jobs that I work between college now, it's always like they're trying to squeeze as much life as they can for the smallest amount in return.

I'm not a sissy who's allergic to work either. Anyone familiar with my background knows this. The common situation for most 'hard-charging' millennials' is that they can't find work that rewards industriousness and no opportunities or are forced to labor in a politically correct white collar job with no bonus incentives that don't require selling your dignity. Self-employment is the most liberating path from the looks of things. I'm aiming for that now, but even that seems to have its drawbacks. That's the reason I've taken so long to settle on a major; you never know what drudgeries await you if you chose an entrepreneurship you can't live with after all.

When I said old people I meant the 50+ shitty parents to the millennials.

Yes I hear ya, and I've been doing that since high school - which is why I'm now in a position of management in a workshop of around 20 guys, all but two are older than I am.

Yet you will still find me emptying bins and sweeping the floor if it needs doing and everyone is busy. Went in today (Sunday) to help boss with rearranging the workshop while everyone is away which I won't ask to be paid for.

RE: The Butthurt Chronicles: Millenial edition
I think the focus on the Millennial Man is actually a little harsh here. I also found whatever this guy is posting to generally be some sort of psychotic rambling, but on the other hand I've seen some really shitty stuff.

Quote:Truth:

Generation Cry Baby: Why Millennials Are a F**king Joke

Here is something I saw today which resonated with me.

Quote:It would be absurd to expect the lone common worker to be capable of facing his employer alone on any issue. The employer has much greater resources at his disposal and without proper regulations, has nothing stopping him from abusing these resources to simply crush any demand coming his way, legitimate or not. His relationship to his employees becomes one of pseudo-slavery: Though the employees can quit at any time, they do so at the cost of their revenue, and thus of their food, clothing and housing. The only difference between such an individual and a slave is that he gets to pick his master, and even then that is a presumptuous assumption: He does not always have another master to pick.

Lets face it though, that article is just meant to be pure click bait and advertising. Just like that new South Park episode, I can't tell whether you are a real person or just a shitty advert.

I feeel ya. I'd agree with the consensus that the Millenials have been dealt something of a shitty hand. But a man can only play the cards he has. Sure, some will fold- these are the millenials that el Mech and others are so scathing about. I'm sure there was similar in the previous generation.

Sticking with the cards anology, self employment is that joker to turn a shitty hand into a winning one. I've been self employed since I left school. I've worked some crazy hours, but been rewarded far more than I would have been in a dead end job. I'd take issue with your closing sentence- there's no such thing as an entrepreneurship that you can't like with. You can just change it. That's the beauty of self employment.

Go for it mate, you won't look back.

They who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety- Benjamin Franklin, as if you didn't know...

At least she grasps irony, beyond the scope of most Millennials

I laughed at the part where she had to throw in an excuse for mental issues:

Quote:SIDE NOTE PART 2: Alright, I will take this time to clarify the counseling statement. Nowhere did I state I am against mental illness, though that’s how many are perceiving it. My issue lies in people either a) abusing resources made available to people who struggle with mental illness because they’re overly sensitive and b) people with mental illness using their illness as a shield and justification for actions. I do not attack those who do their best to cope with mental illness on a day to day basis. Rather, those who fall back on mental illness or emotional turmoil as an excuse and crutch, or a bargain for special treatment.

So it sounds like the new Millennial thing is to say "You're not allowed to offend me because I have a mental disorder of being easily offended"?

Lolwtf

Teacher: You got an F.
Student: I'm offended, you should be fired.
Teacher: Grow up, pussy.
Student: I can't because I'm mentally disabled from receiving an F gracefully and learning from it.
Teacher: Oh, I'm sorry, here's an A.

The new education system.

SJW's emerged with Millenials, Millenials will also finish with SJW's. Just wait. After dealing with SJW's we'll have to deal with real fascists.

At least it is a more honest and less post-modern ideology, non-facetious too.

In short, Millenials are more polarized. You will find many SJW pussies but you will also find a more prevalence of Red Pill men comparing to before, also because this is a more auspicious time to be aware and RP.

Exactly. The Millenials aren't like 60's radicals opposing the values of their parents. They are angry because they don't get to have the same lives as their parents.

That is why the whole thing is so shrill. Undoubtedly Boomers had it easier, and they are soft, and raised soft children.

Unfortunately, those soft kids are being launched into a hard world of steep learning curves and small margins of error.

I just wish it didn't lead different generations of the same culture to turn on each other. It is just more divide and conquer and ultimately pointless.

Pretty soon all the Boomers will be dead, and all the problems of moving civilization forward will still be there, and it might make sense to get on with tackling them now.

Certainly, AB, but the previous expression was not as significant as it is now, mostly because of that amplifying power, indeed.

And this is precisely why they are more of a nuisance nowadays. That, coupled with the narcissism and the emotional fragility create a certain group dynamic where people can go to feel accepted. A bit like Daesh...

You can't even compare activists of the past with SJWs. I have known many liberal political activists in the 80's and 90's and I can tell you that they were a different animal. What is missing today is civility.

A modern day SJW, sent back in the past, would just be a crazy person, shunned by any political activist who wanted to be taken seriously. Even the idea of having a label for yourself like Social Justice Warrior would have been met with embarrassed silence.

As many have pointed out repeatedly on this forum, much of the purported activism today is just status signalling, which, as you point out, has become amplified and, to use one of their words, normalized.

When personality disorders, which are extremely emotionally satisfying to those that have them, become accepted as normal behavior, the floodgates open, emotions rise, and issues are left in the dust.

GenX had time to get their shit together. The ones that utterly refused either died of a drug overdose, AIDS, or are doing hard time in prison. Millenials are not getting time to put it together, tweak their careers or try stuff out while making a good wage.
Gen X were shit on until we proved we can fight and win wars. We kicked ass all over the globe. Sad that many didnt come back. We also are the middle management now getting shit done.
Millenials better hope they are written into some old farts will cuz they will need all the inheritance they can get.

I don't see it myself. The suffragettes were throwing themselves under horses. BLM just seems like the Black Panthers again. My uncle was spat on returning from Vietnam by anti-war protestors. I've seen Feminists fight police and talk about killing all men in the 70's, Greenpeace was vandalising ships in the 1980's, and the anti-nuclear protests of the 80's meant many violent clashes between protestors and police. The Uni Communists idiolised mass killers. The Land Rights and Stolen Generation protests of the 80's and 90's weren't civil either. The tranny rights protestors I met in the 90's were batshit insane, and the riot grrls were pulling out their tampons on stage and talking about using chainsaws to end the patriarchy violently. The tendency to violent thought and action is always there and emotions always run high.

Not really: Radfem. Riot grrl. Fat activist. Agent of Change. Greenie. SHARPs (anti-racist skinheads) are just some of the self-identifying labels from the 80's and 90's I can remember off-hand.

You can't understand Millennials without Context.

It's too easy to always point the finger of blame outwards to ease cognitive dissonance, which offers you no chance of self-reflective growth whatsoever. Learning to realistically-criticise your own failings is a hard skill to learn, but a rewarding one.

I know that will sound sanctimonious in text without the conversational emotional cues to offer greater context: I'm not judging or lecturing, simply stating a useful tool exists for self-improvement.

I do know that when I meet up with other forum members, age and generational affiliation is completely irrelevant. I don't really understand this need that (some) older dudes have to malign younger generations as being generally of a lower quality...

Actually I take that back: It's coming from insecurity and fear and it's dumb.

The whole "my generation is better than yours" debate is petty, reductive as hell, and seems like a total waste of time.

And just so I'm being clear: Lookin' at you here rpg, debeguiled.

Fair enough. I was speaking mainly about personal experiences with activists I knew and worked with, and perhaps extrapolated too widely.

That being said, I was on the west coast of the U.S., and you were in Australia(?), which may account for the differences to some degree. It just didn't feel so adversarial to me, and the issue was more important than personalities, branding, or careers in activism.

It was my experience that the people who were getting things done, and not the outliers, were mostly mature and reasonable people. It wasn't until Rush Limbaugh came along that the idea that insult could replace argument really took hold on the right and then bled over to the left.

Most of this was before the internet, and guys I worked with were writing editorials for the New York Times and Christian Science Monitor, and backing up their positions with science and common sense, in addition to their local activism.

I mean yeah, there have always been marginal groups who focused more on their egos and group identities, it's just that I don't remember them being taken seriously. Like the Black Panthers weren't taken as seriously as the Civil Rights movement was. People were scared, but not compelled by their arguments.

Anyway, this is getting a little far afield. In regards to this thread, the point I was trying to make is that the current climate of instant hate all the time is the background against which a young person grows up, and I wanted to show that there are actual instances of people with disagreement on the issues who still show respect for one another, and that it is still possible now. (Though not with the true believer lunatic left.)

I have kids that are millenials. So it is a bit personal. They have taken some good advice I have made through observation and are doing extremely well for their age. I wish millenials the very best and they do have more tools at their disposal, if they can see it. Most cant right now because of inexperience. But I do wish them the best in this fucked up world we have. The career paths and dating world they face is very tough but with some help they can do fine.
