Whether it's the young gentleman who was in your employ or one of those "Pasco County Husband Comes Home to Wife Getting Gangbanged by German Shepherds"-stories, anything that takes place Florida needs an asterisk and a notation saying, "This event took place in Florida."

In short, Florida work-ethic / stupidity is an outlier when compared to the rest of the country. So yeah, the mop-breaker was lazy/stupid, but it's Florida; so one needs to consider the state itself in addition to the kid's age.

Coming from the mid-atlantic and midwest, just getting a fucking pool serviced in Florida - I mean, just getting the pool guy to show up - is like to solving a rubik's cube. The pool guy was referred by the boomer real estate agent who cried at lunch one day because creditors are closing in on her (a woman, I know...) "baller" southwest Florida lifestyle. She was the best of like 5 real estate agents.

Then when the pool guy shows up, claims to fix it, and the pool heater remains untouched... man, I think you've been in the Sunshine State for too long and are beginning to think that this fuckery is normal.

Never mind that the pool guy in question was anywhere from aged 40-60 (hard to tell on account of sun-damaged skin), but you don't see me going on about how all boomers/gen x are worthless. Why? Again, because it's Florida.

Now that Florida has passed New York in population, the Sunshine State is without question the number one destination for northerners to run away from their problems. The state is just a magnet for this type of shit, ergo any story about idiot millennials (as well as boomers or gen x) in Florida needs to be taking with a grain of salt.

You want to treat me like one, you can find someone else.
It's not that the work's beneath me; I've cleaned up my share of vomit, filthy bathrooms, and all that other nasty stuff and it's never bothered me. I've frozen my ass off spending hours in below-freezing storage lockers, and I still have a scar on my hand from where I ripped it open on a piece of jagged metal attached to a poorly maintained food prep machine. Didn't bitch about that, either.

I just hate the idea that the 6 or 7 bucks an hour you're paying me makes me obligated to be your personal bitch. I'd rather go find another job.

Being an employer one of the things that I like to do is give menial or laborious tasks that are obviously "beneath" some employees skill level to see how they handle it. It's not because they are my bitch it's because I just want to see how responsible they are and what their attitude is like before I retain them or give them more things to do.

I heard they do similar things in parts of the military to weed out people with poor attitudes. I see the principle in it because it works to figure out who is trustworthy or reliable when things get hectic. Since i'm an absentee owner it's important to find people who are trustworthy in this way.

Trustworthy people, as you would expect in this day and age, are not that easy to find.

Do you think it applies in general to members of this forum as well?

I am curious because I am at the tail end of the boomer generation, and generally try to relate to others as I find them rather than based on their age.

When I get frustrated with Millennials as a group from time to time it is not because of specific qualities they have, but because of how they act towards me in my dealings with them.

It seems like they have assigned a role for me in any situation and aren't particularly interested in who I am or what I have to say. If I don't identify the role they have assigned me, and immediately accommodate myself to it, they freak out or get angry or dismissive.

Consequently, my frustration with Millennials doesn't come from feeling superior because I am older, or somehow wiser. It comes when my patience and good will is exhausted, and I am just tired of trying.

Funnily enough, it reminds me of when I was a kid and tried to talk with my parents friends, only to find myself ignored, dismissed, or corrected by someone who didn't know what they were talking about.

Sometimes, joking around with myself, I think:

"I hate old people, and young people are the new old people."

I am only at the beginning stages of working this idea out, but it seems to me that Boomers and Millennials have a lot more in common as demographic groups than either would like to admit, and that a Millennial is kind of a Boomer 2.0.

Anyone feeling me here?

You got the wrong end of the stick mate, El Mech deals motors. Washing and waxing would be the first item on the job description.

I see where you're coming from though. But to my mind, if you've that sort of attitude then you'd better be prepared to put your money where your mouth is and go self employed. Also, ever consider that if you showed willing the boss might treat you a little better? At least give him the chance before you bail. My guys do personal errands for me, they do it without bitching and if they do a good job they get a little extra cash.

For what it's worth, I'm a Millenial (I guess, 1988) and I employ millenials. El Mech's experiences are by no means atypical. My buddy in foresty has the same problem. Many haven't got the brains or the brawn to be any good.

I'll disagree here. Whilst what you're doing sounds great in theory, I was so grateful enough to even have a job as a teenager is an economic downturn that I would constantly end up being taken advantage of in this manner, because the simple truth of the matter is most bosses aren't noble in action.

If you accept the added personal duties without complaint, with the notion proving yourself a hard worker expecting to be humanised and respected for going the extra mile for your employers, it's unlikely to happen. I was never once given respect back. All that ever happened is that I was exploited, and every promise of advancement would evaporate when it came time for it to happen: why would they want to get rid of a worker who doesn't complain about being exploited beyond their job description? They're more valuable right where they are.

Think of it this way: do girls respect nice guys?

Once I became a man who had the self-respect to say no, I'm not doing that, I started going places. Go figure.

If people want fucking personal assistants, have the honesty to hire them. Don't try and turn worker's duties into both their job description and being a personal Bitch. Given the current climate, if I was a Millennial, I wouldn't expect my boss to be operating from a place of honour and nobility either. Most people simply abuse power.

It cuts both ways. Some bosses are great guys who will occasionally need you to do menial and stupid shit. I've been that guy a Few times before not because I wanted to but Because i couldn't make a deadline without Getting Some help. Other bosses actually are shitty people and others Will want to test your attitude.

You just need the EQ and the street smarts to recognize the difference.
