Your post is making me think in general about the airbnb market, which has been very good to me as a tenant. My only observation is that I would suspect 95% of sudden cancellations are done by the tenant and not the host.

I think this kind of thing is exactly what the reputation system is for. Leave a note on her page saying "Broke the booking contract with a demonstrably false lie"

I could be wrong, but I'm under the impression feedback/reviews are now only published when both have left one about the other.

If that's true, you won't have to worry about negative feedback being posted about you.

That's not the case. If one has left a review but the other hasn't, the only thing that happens is that the left review gets published once it's too late for the other to write a review. That way you can't read the other party's review before writing theirs.

I asked the other host if she contacted him and he said no but its a pretty big coincidence that he would contact me out of the blue like that. Nothing else has happened and I haven't heard from her or Airbnb, I will likely call them tomorrow and see if I can get my money back.

After not using Airbnb for nearly three years because I haven’t really traveled to new places, I recently found myself in a new city and wanted to book a private rental. So I logged onto the Airbnb app, tried to book a place but it wasn’t going through so I contacted Airbnb admin to resolve the problem. Within a couple of days I was informed that I was banned for lfe from the site and that there was no way I can ever become a member again and that Airbnb owes me no explanation.


So that’s the end of this story, I’m banned from one of the most useful websites for a traveller in the world and I assume it’s because of that crazy bitch in Bogota, although I haven’t contacted the site because it seems futile and fuck them anyway.

Nothing is scarier than this. One allegation, one scam, one bad host and it's all over in terms of having easy access to apartments all over the world. This is the dark side of the "sharing economy", also scary is that these services are all basically having economies of scale and monopolies because of how big they are. The thought of this scares me to death because of my political beliefs and frequenting this forum. There's no due process when sites like this accuse you of something. Just an immediate banhammer.

Definitely should fight it man. AirBnB is just too useful. Can't say that you'll get very far fighting it, bc all these Silicon Valley firms have horrible customer service...

Mental note to keep all host-renter communications within AirBnB, no whatsapp no viber whatsoever. That way AirBNB has a record of all communication so no one can falsely accuse you of anything.

You don't need a VPN... do you need your ID even, I thought you can just link a facebook for ID verification....

Anyway, on my first hosting account, I had this gay dude complain about no AC even though the apartment didn't advertise AC. So airbnb refunded him his $400, but I'd already been paid by them, and my account just showed a negative balance. So in my mind, if I continued with that account, I thought I'd be letting the next tenant live in my place and fuck my shit up for free. So instead I created another account. Same name and hosted the same apartment (but changed the pics up a bit), and it was never a problem.

I'd assume there's more scrutiny with hosting accounts than buyer accounts since the hosting ones are more susceptible to fraud and scams. So if I were you I'd just make a new account, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Yeah you'll not have your reviews, but whatever. Interesting fact about me, I've stayed in at least 30 airbnbs over the years and I've never been given a review

AirBNB has become more and more aggressive about ID checks. I can't remember for sure, but I think my account has been locked once or twice pending ID image submissions and I don't think completing Facebook verification would have been acceptable enough.

This is a valuable lesson in why you should never leave something like this unresolved and should chase it until a favourable conclusion is reached.

That really sucks though, as entertaining as this thread is, the lack of happy ending is a bummer.
