I am currently packing up my stuff, planning to do the drive in 3 days 2 nights with the 3rd night arriving at Edmonton. Excited and nervous at the same time lol. It is too late to turn back now haha so I am just going to go with full force and never look back.

Suncor is laying off 1000 people by the end of this year. I heard that they have someone going around Fort Mc interviewing people lol.

Most of these layoffs at shell, cnrl or suncor will be construction guys or laborers.

Rig count is looking pretty bad though for this time of the year. But still plenty of green hands on the rigs. So companies are definitely hiring. Just less than in the last years probably.

I lived through many of these cycles during my 45 year career in the oil patch trades. After my first layoff in the late 1960s I learned to save my money during the boom times so that I could survive the busts. I also expanded the range of my marketable skills and I was willing to travel outside of Canada for employment when the Canadian oil patch dried up for one of the busts. Happily, I experienced no other layoffs after that shock in the late 1960s. My oil patch savings have funded a very comfortable retirement for me.

I moved to the oil patch in 1974. Found my wife, raised 4 kids, retired at 53 and am enjoying life. We had a few busts...at the time it seemed the world was ending but we always bounced back quickly. There's still no better place for a young man to go and make his fortune.

As it has been stated already except for the naysayers this has happened 4 times in the past if you were born in Alberta in the 60s. This time it's elimination of the Foreign works program, belt tightening & layoffs, especially in & around Edmonton & Calgary. It's a normal but larger event in McMurray this time.

I was in Alberta in 1980, and saw bumper stickers that said "Please don't let me blow this oil boom, like I did the last one." Yes, the oil business is cyclical, but this time,it's different. The tide is starting to turn, especially in Ontario, with their announcement of a carbon tax this morning.

MY FAVOURITE: OK folks: I’m selling two ridiculous-looking jacked-up trucks (Newfoundland flag decals, of course), a Mustang, jet-ski, two quads, a side-by-side, my cabin, motor-home, and trailer. Need to sell ASAP as I don’t have my high school diploma and I was living paycheck to paycheck driving a bus on site for $140,000 a year, and the mortgage payment on my $3 million home is coming up!

I wonder if there is a business opportunity here...either for the guys on the patch who saved their money or outsiders with a good amount of capital. Maybe buy up assets(trucks, toys, etc) on the cheap and resell later on or in a different province/country? Maybe invest in one of those companies that does repo work? Probably an uptick in that is coming.

you're right. thank fuck i have a decent amount of change saved up in the bank. i dont have to worry about being short of money for some time

Room for rent

I am probably bouncing out of Canada for a few months come spring break up. As such my place is up for rent.

Its super close to U of A, Whyte Ave and has a cool balcony overlooking the river valley. One other flatmate (really cool chill guy) who is a good buddy for years. He has lots of info on the oilsands and works a 5/9 rotation (days not weeks ha).

Rent is around 780 a month which includes a park spacing. We had free internet for the first year but I think that is up so maybe 820 including bills a month.

If you are interested send me a PM and ill give you a call/Skype. You can move in March 1st. Maybe sooner. Our lease contract is up so I can leave at anytime but my buddy likes the place a lot so wants to stay put hence this post.

^^^The location of your apartment is probably one of the best in the entire city, not only for the great view of the river valley (arguably Edmonton's only nice view) but also the great logistics.

Honestly this whole situation is an absolute cunt, I left a country in one it's deepest recessions to come to a place that is booming with the sole purpose of stacking a few shekels. I'm here three months and the fucking ship is sinking. It's cold as fuck, it's an ugly city and now the work is drying up and I think it's hilarious. This is the comedy of life, ride it out, enjoy it, fuck it.

In retrospect I suppose I can find it easy to say this as I've all ready been through a recession, a pretty bad one at that. What I've learned is that talking about how shit everything has gotten doesn't help but laughing about shit everything has gotten most certainly helps. I'm on the front line as far as being cut goes, a greenhand with no experience, I could be cut tomorrow. I wouldn't like it but it's not as if tripping pipe is my goal in life, pulling slips does not get me hard. It's all beyond my control.

Anyway, if anyone wants to learn a bit of archery, give me a shout. I bought my first compound bow, it's fun as fuck, very zen

Still really easy to find a job, especially in the city. If you have some extra money pick up class 1 license. You won't have to worry about work again until Google manages to replace all drivers.

I concur, at least as far as city jobs are concerned, there is still a lot of hiring signs around, but most people don't see it that way. It's all relative right, if people are used to seeing 100 hiring signs in an industrial park and now they're only seeing 10 they think 'Shit's going downhill'. Definitely lots of in town work still. I got nothing for a week and today got 5 offers, but I'm skeptical they're actually going to go through.

I had a guy phone me yesterday saying I could come in today and see how it goes. He phones me 30 mins before I'm supposed to show up and says that the job is canceled and there might be one later in the day... nothing since then.

Guy just phoned me saying theres tons of work etc. We talk for a bit, I kinda just say yep I'm ready to work whenever. Says he'll call me tomorrow to confirm I'm coming in on Monday.

The other jobs are thru email and construction trades for contractors.

They get knocked up by 19-25y/o dudes working in the rigs. Have no idea how do the whole family thing actually works. They break up with their 19-25yr/o boyfriend baby daddy after a few arguments, drinks, and rips of coke, and voila...Tinder mom looking for a man to support her and her new daughter.

Bobby welder would support her, but he's got a coke habit to support, and truck payments, he even financed his lift kit and KC Lights and RBC wants it's money first.

So many of these simple ass girls drink, party, and do drugs months into their pregnancy (because they usually don't even know they're knocked up for a while). Half these kids come out with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. I'd wager a bet many of these young moms are FAS kids themselves. How many times you talk to a girl who can't make the connection between consequences and her actions? Like a deer in the headlights. All the time in Edmonton! FAS, it's an Alberta oil-field special.

Word of advise, don't jizz in these chicks. Stay strapped.

Man every time I read this thread it scares the shit out of me!!! From oil collapsing to dumb sluts who don't understand birth control I'm surprised I made it this far.

A good trick to avoid getting an Albertan girl knocked up is to only fuck girls in University. I think once you venture into secretaries and assistants you are in the danger zone. I also always ask if many of their friends have babies - more then a few and you're in trouble. Girls out here are so dizzy remembering to taking birth control pills too. At least three girls have left them at my place and texted me later saying they need them/didnt take them. I have found a few packs working in the cafe as well just left on tables ha.

I have also ended two tinder dates cause the girl had a kid and somehow expected me to put in MORE effort to get here 'I need to look after my kid so I don't do hook-ups anymore'. Too little too late baby.

Job wise I am maybe getting one more project but I am planning on taking time off till end of summer. I think I will be hitting up western Europe (Sourcecodes Budapest datasheet). If it picks back up I will come back early but it looks quiet for the next few months. Its cheaper to travel and party in Europe than sit on your ass in Edmonton.

I just worked a job in nisku and still saw a bunch of hiring signs. mostly for Labour. kijiji also has tons of shit for framing (if you want I have a few numbers of guys who offered me a job thru kijiji) and a lot of retail/serving jobs have signs up

also anyone size 9.5 shoes. The old tenants here left a closet full of shoes and my roommate said I could sell em. A pair of almost new Nike 5.0s, golf shoes and some beat up red wings
