Hi, I posted here a long time ago and have finally gotten everything sorted and will be moving to Edmonton shortly (next 10 days) to take up a position. I'm looking for a place to stay downtown or near to it if anyone knows of anything - a room preferably but I'm open to suggestions? I know someone on here rents out their place while they're off working in the sands but I can't quite remember who and there's a lot of pages to search so em, I'll try this first, maybe they'll see this post.

There's a whole section dedicated to room rentals and roommates, also one for short term rentals if you were just looking to get on your feet and move on to something better.

^ yeah edmonton isn't all nisku and oil. much of the city is industrial from warehouses to automotive. I've Been working around a lot of these places and am still seeing lots of hiring signs. get a stack of resumes and go driving around.

like laurifer says there's tons of in town construction going on. drywalling framing roofing etc.

go on kijiji around noon till 4 and you'll see all theSe guys desperate for workers.

make sure you tell them how you're not a fuck up, how you have your own vehicle, CSTS first aid fall protection, get your own set of basic ppe and say you have any trade specific tools, let them know what tools you know how to use etc.

guaranteed you'll get a call back. make it sound like you know somewhat what you're doing. before you work YouTube some videos related to the trade so you know at least something about it.

The author makes some pretty good points and overall I agree with what he writes but even if Alberta has slowed down substantially, I think that the local economies in Edmonton or Fort McMurray are still much better off than a place like Montreal or Halifax.

Interesting article scotian. That seems to be the reality at the moment - that it's not so easy right now to get a start in the patch without experience.
For any guys that have arrived in Edmonton recently and are struggling to find something, it's worth repeating the advice that was given by many forum members on the thread already : Don't just concentrate your search for camp jobs in Fort McMurray, especially without experience; they'll be as rare as rocking-horse shit at the moment .

Spread your search wider to places like Grand Prairie, Red Deer, Estevan etc. Even BC.
If possible, buy a cheap set of wheels for about $1500-$2500 and hit the highway man. A 10-15 yr old Toyota or Honda would be my personal pick. My 2003 Toyota has 250k on the clock and is still going like a champion, reckon it's good for at least another 200.

Well, I've been here nearly 2 years now. I have absolutely no regrets about making the move here and buying a house regardless of recent developments.
It's been pretty quiet for me workwise for the last couple of months - just the straight 40 hours most week, not much overtime or other work. My 2 year 'contract' with my employer is nearly up now. They've offered to keep me on if I want to stay, but am considering finally heading up to the patch for some shutdown work, or something anywhere with big hours like a 21-7. I'm glad I stayed and saw out the contract; future employers value loyalty. But now I think it's time to fuck off and get something better with longer hours.

I have good Canadian experience now in a semi-oil and gas related field and in a multi-trade industrial environment so that will look good on my resume along with my previous stuff from back home in Ireland and elsewhere. So if any of the forum big dogs hears of something, maybe you'd shoot me a pm - would be much appreciated. In the meantime I'm going to start contacting all the big and medium sized operators to start the ball rolling.

Those poor, hard up oil companies have managed to use the situation to cut their contractors out & even their own staff have been reduced by 10%. Those still lucky enough to have a job are being told they need to take a 10% cut to their salaries, the proverbial gun to the head! Shit seems very familiar to the Banking crisis of a few years back, those at the top still making their jacked up bonuses!

There's some weird shit going on in the oil market. A couple weeks ago WTI and Brent were nearly equal. Today WTI is at 52.81 and Brent is at 61.57. I wonder why that is. I guess local factors and transportation and such are bigger than I thought.

Anyone here been looking at Mining companies for work? I have a lot of geology buddies who have been getting hired like crazy lately in BC, Ontario and Sask. Even a girl I know just lined up work on Baffin Island! Mining must be humming along now because operating costs went down with the oil prices. Caterpillar hasn't seen a massive crash in their stock price which I would expect when oil prices fall (cat is a great index stock for industry, if people Are buying cats then mining and oil must be good!) so maybe mining is sustaining it?

anyone have any data on car insurance companies and how to get a good deal

I got a couple quotes and its 3500 bucks a year to insure my car. That's half what I paid for the thing. I thought I was getting fucked in BC at 2500 for the year. Including driving 1000km to Edmonton I only put on 6000km in a year that shit is absurd

If your car is worth only 7000$. I would go with 1 or 2 million $ liability only. I pay a bit more than 1000$ per year for my truck.

When I moved out here, I rolled solo to the clubs 4 times a week, in addition to day game and online game. And a 21-7 rotational shift out of town. Shit isn't easy, and quite frankly not for everyone, but it was well worth it and sets you up nicely going into your job, trade, rotation or unemployed on couch gig. Pussy is a great motivator.

The one on Jasper is walk-in only though. You could also go to a GP when you get back and get everything done in one fell swoop. You still would have to wait for your results from the STI clinic so it wouldn't make much difference aside from the insta-HIV tests that the clinic do.
