Your point of water filtration vs. water storage is slightly off base, in the sense that one should not think in terms of just one or the other. One should think of both.

Storing water is not a long term strategy unless you live in a pineapple under the sea.

Storing water is meant to give one a head start. For sure, you need to be able to filter water - but what if sources of water are scarce or hard to read for a time? Having a sizeable store of water will give you time to think about it if you haven't already. In the beginning phase of chaos where people flock to grocery stores to buy up all the wares, having already done so will come in handy.

I haven't been to France, so maybe my perception is wrong, but shouldn't there be a significant amount of infrastructure in place to keep you from resorting to living like it's the goddamn end of the world?

Instead of prepping for the zombie apocalypse, being prepared for real life helps more.
Grab a copy of Robert Young Pelton's "World's Most Dangerous Places"
Take an Urban Escape and Evasion course
Learn a martial art
Stay fit
Learn a language that might come in handy
Maintain your frame
Acquire more wealth
Learn useful skills that would keep you in demand regardless of the situation

Basically every social tool advocated on this forum is more useful than stockpiling MREs and investing in cardboard emergency toilets unless you're seeing direct evidence that the sky is truly falling.

Honestly, you'd be a lot better off with a melee weapon than a crossbow when it comes to home defense.

That crossbow is going to take probably 30 seconds to load or more, especially if you're not extremely familiar with using it. You have to place the end on the ground, put your foot in the support, attach those cables, pull back the chord, unattach the cables, add the arrow, aim and fire.

Meaning you're only going to get one shot on someone who's broken into your house. And you better make sure it's a damn good shot, because it does not have near the stopping or killing power of a gun.

Not saying it would be BAD thing to have, but I would caution guys from thinking they're going to one shot one kill some lunatic in their living room with most crossbows. You'd be a lot better off catching some guy with a baseball bat as he comes through a window or door.

Buy a set of Kitchen knives. A set that has various sizes and have them placed in several strategic areas of your apt. Barricade your door at night and prop something against it that will make a lot of noise if moved so it will wake you up.

Maybe a loud barking dog type of noise that you can turn on. Probably an iPad app for that. People don't like to mess with a loud German Shepard.

Plan an escape route that is something other than your front door. Windows? How will you get out of the window, and where will you go once your out. Have a plan. Maybe have your shoes near the window ready to put on, need some rope?, etc.

Here's my nerd speculation:

In a situation where you would need to draw and release quickly i'd say a regular recurve bow with a low draw weight would be superior to any other ranged option outside of a firearm. The reason why it's better than a crossbow is speed. Crossbows are traditionally used for static defense.

Plus a plain old modern recurve will have plenty of power and a modern crossbow or bow will overpenetrate anyways. It's not like on TV/movies.. that arrow will easily blow through a person in most cases.

You also get historical bonus points for firing an arrow at a rampaging muslim from a recurve bow.

Triple bonus points if you do it on horseback.

Having a bit of knowledge of both, I would say that a recurve bow of around 60-70lbs draw weight would be ideal- we RVFrs all lift, so that kind of draw weight should be fairly easy. A recurve bow certainly scores in repeatability stakes, plus you can get take-down versions for easy concealment.

However a crossbow would also be very useful. Firstly, they are a damn sight more accurate in the hands of most people. You can sight a crossbow- with a recurve bow it's all in the consistency of your stance, draw and release. I shoot a fair bit and if I had to rely upon the bow to feed me I think I'd be pretty hungry.

Secondly, a crossbow 'looks' more threatening than a bow. Think Mad Max.

I agree that this is something of an overreaction to the recent events (and I've already voiced my opinion that the French overreacted given the scale of the threat)

However, I have always worked on the principle that 'it's better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it'.

'Prepping' doesn't make you crazy, you're only crazy if you prep and then go on the Discovery channel to show other preppers with bigger guns where you keep all your guns and food
