Reggae bar in chinatown deserves a mention too.

Lots of backpackers but cute local non pro girls go there to. Party atmos. Thankfully they play different kinds of music, not just reggae and they have pool tables too.

Reggae bar is alight, but it's a bit of a rip off.. €3 for a glass of beer. That said, you're right - it does attract a decent crowd. For anti-malaria a spray works fine, no matter where you are. Glad to see you got your flag Where are you from by the way? Lumiere sounds French...

kindredspirit: the island has some great beauty (especially Bako). As for seafood, it's pretty cheap. It's decent quality, but it ranks poorly compared to somewhere like Zanzibar in Tanzania. Borneo is just incredible in so many other respects however, it's just got a great vibe; there's something in the air.

Anybody know any good budget hotels in which to stay for a couple of nights?

Kuala Lumpur seems like a pretty tame and somewhat boring city. I might be wrong though.

I'd like to bang another Norwegian tourist or two while I'm in SE Asia. What's the situation like with Scandies in KL?

Budget hotels, not really. I would do your best to stay at the Hilton in KL (last time I stayed for less then 100 USD a night) or for a slightly cheaper alternative I would check here

As for hostels, I never ventured into any of them as KL is cheap as is however I constantly hung out at some around petaling street. This is where I would search for the Scandi's if I were you, it is the main backpacker hideout.

As for the Malay flag, the best place I found to do it was around KL Sentral, I wish I could remember the name but they had an after hours club that was packed with locals (pros and the not).

Ask around to see if it still exists, was located on the south end of the train station a year ago.

I don´t naughty nomad is still active on this forum. I also have been to all the places above : Kinabalu,brunei,miri,kuching, KL. Beautiful siteseeing but no bang in these places, its very muslim overthere.

I was asking about his comparison of Borneo specifically to Phils....not overall Malaysia to Phils.

Anyhow, I just don't assume that everyone uses that as their criteria for picking one place over another - personally, when it comes to SouthEast Asian countries that wouldn't factor in for me anyways because with the ultra- easy puss comes a lot of other bullshit, and you can get laid pretty much anywhere in the world. Not to mention that there are plenty of other negatives to Phils that would seem to drag down it's appeal even if was a bonus for you.

Guess I should have paid attention to the poster's username and I would have picked up on his reasoning though.

Anyhow, if you've been to Borneo, would love to hear more about it.

Malaysia is not that Muslim. Women can wear whatever the hell the want. You can get a beer almost anywhere (at least in the tourist areas). There are huge clubs open all night in the big cities. The Chinese and Indian girls all go to clubs, as do some of the liberal Malays.

Honestly, the reason it is a bit harder to get laid here is that it's richer than most of the rest of SE Asia. People don't need to go looking for some western guy to try to have a stable life like in other SE Asia destinations.

Hmm... not sure about that. True, Malaysia not hardcore like Saudi Arabia but... still, religion taken quite seriously there. Islam is state religion. A Malay is legally defined as Muslim... if he/she converts away from Islam, he/she no longer legally Malay...

I don't think Malay women can wear whatever they want if they are true Muslims... maybe some who convert away from Islam can, but I think that is rare exception... go to Kuala Lumpur... very cosmopolitan, modern city... you will see everywhere Malay women wearing hijab covering hair and around faces... they can wear western clothing but must cover arms and legs, even during hot weather...

Yes, Malaysia is quite liberal and not so strict, probably due to large Chinese minority (25%) who are not bound by Muslim customs, and are responsible for wealth in that country... non-Malay Malaysian women can wear what they want and drink alcohol...

YMG, malaysia is not a popular destination among Scandinavians. You'll be 100x more likely bumping into one in Thailand.

Hope I'm not digging up an ancient thread, but anyway...

Spent a week in Kuala Lumpur (KL) last month as I had to do a visa run to get my Thai ED visa.

Malaysia is definitely underestimated.

KL was awash with attractive Chinese women. For a long term thing I'd prefer to marry a Malaysian-Chinese, as they've not been brainwashed by living in the mainland. Mainland women are hot, but they're often completely empty inside.

Saw some hot Malay women, but Western dudes will probably only be interested in the Chinese women.

Malaysia is muslim, but not everyone there is muslim! And other things are tolerated. You can buy alcohol and pork. Alcohol is very expensive though. A 330ml can of beer was about £1 in UK money. Could be a good place to go if you want to quit beer!

KL could be good place to find a well paying expat job. Living costs are about the same as Thailand. There's a brain drain of talent to Singapore, so KL should be quite welcoming of foreigners.

Despite being muslim, sex for sale was quite common - just walk around a Chinese area and you'll get hustled, especially if you're white.

Many people speak English in Malaysia. But even if they don't, Malay has enough English sounding words that the locals can understand you. For example, a "bus" is a "bas".

Malaysian food is good, although I was put off by all the Indians eating with their hands.

KLIA is a great airport - it even has a miniature rainforest in the terminal building. It's definitely a good place to stopover for a week. If you want to see some sights, go to the Petronas Towers at sundown, and get the train to Batu Caves (but avoid weekends).

Finally, beware of monkeys!!!

Met two Malaysian chicks yesterday here in Bali. They were the hottest Asian chicks I met so far. Now I am thinking about visiting Malaysia. Is Kuala Lumpur the only place to visit? Has anyone been to other cities?

I think Penang is great, you can go to the beach and lots of clubs in Georgetown.

Since we're on the topic, I'm interested in the differences between Penang vs. KL. My friend says Penang is a better party city, and it's probably cheaper too + beaches, makes me not want to waste my time with KL. Any thoughts? (I live in Singapore)

Penang is actually a smaller city and much easier accessible as most places are within 20 minutes walking distance. For partying, it might be cheaper to roll in Penang but KL girls are much more liberated.

Basically, geography wise:

Penang - island, resorts, (almost) clean beaches, historical monuments, lots of expats and tourists. However, Family friendly.

KL - city, traffic jams, lots of expats and tourists, Not (THAT) family friendly, Huge ass clubs in Bukit Bintang, better shopping venue compared to Penang though.

As far as beach holidays go, I think Thailand is a better destination. KL for gaming is definitely better, especially if you got a huge bankroll (upwards of USD 500 per day).

I have also seen quite a few postings on this forum to suggest that the cost of living in KL is very similar to BKK.
