This is the exact same pattern of behavior for political hack spokespeople they put on the news channels, styled as Republican/Democratic "strategists." Look good, spout the line, get invited to fundraisers and campaign events, write some op-eds. Then once you've been branded as a true-blue keeper of the realm, ironically your credibility is shot since viewers know you'll just shill for your side. Then you're done. Better get a job at a think tank ghostwriting political bios and organizing single-issue campaigns on the twitters.

None of them written in her all-caps style, which shows that she won't be writing about novelty-flavored oreos or the misogyny of public toilets that can't accommodate her frame for the magazine. The other day an issue of "Men's Health" arrived on my doorstop. It was addressed to someone else which is weird since I've lived there for 1 1/2 years and never gotten an issue before.

Anyway I figured fuckit, I'll flip through the thing. I shit you not, I couldn't get past the cover.

On the cover was some male model, and his face...his eyebrows were clearly waxed, and he was wearing MAKEUP. Maybe that's always been the case but it was glaringly obvious. He looked like one of the homos I see cruising around West Hollywood on a daily basis. To call him a "pretty boy" would be a massive understatement. The guy looked like he should be modelling for some gay man's magazine.

I've never had a subscription to a men's magazine before but I seem to recall a time when I would pass by magazine racks and see Men's Health with reasonably masculine and rugged looking guys on the cover. Maybe it's my imagination.

Masculine men truly have no mainstream media outlet.

Edit: when I say makeup, I don't mean guyliner, nothing like that. But you could tell there was foundation and all that other weird powdery shit that girls put on to make themselves look younger and prettier.

West brought tons of traffic to Jezebel because so many people loved to hate her. I said on here that constantly putting her name out there would make her a celebrity of sorts and assure she got better writing gigs. Looks like that happened.

GQ doesn't care if you hate Lindy. They care if you click on their Web site. That's what brings in advertising dollars. They know she'll probably enrage men, and her stories will go viral via Facebook and Twitter.

I know because this happened to me when I was a writer and got attacked by a feminist who wrote for one of Gawker's blogs. After her tirades (and links) my articles went from being ignored to getting more hits than anyone on the news site I was writing for. They went from having me write an article a month to asking me to write several a week. It didn't matter that certain readers were calling for my head -- all they cared about was "more people visited our site today than all last week!!"

The moral: if you want to read less of a writer, don't talk about her (or him) in a public forum like this one. Send emails or do it in a private chat room.

This reminds me of an old obscure 10cc song I'm sure know one knows, called "Blackmail." In it, a guy surreptitiously snaps pictures of a woman having sex with the intent of ruining her, but she finds them amusing, sends them to Playboy, and becomes famous ("I made a real blunder...I made her a superstar").

Here's a theory:

Lindy West doesn't have strong convictions one way or another, but will simply pump out whatever her employers require, so I doubt her GQ writing will be ALL CAPS / excessive punctuation, or have a major feminism focus, even for a blue pill mag like GQ.

Most likely she was hired because, as I long ago mentioned on here, the Jezebel page views for her 'celebrity culture' pieces quadrupled the numbers for any of her 'political' pieces.

I guarantee you will read what strikes you as an entirely-different writing persona.

Read GQ briefly in my early 20's. Struck me as nothing but hocking the manufactured desires of their advertisers and any life advice they gave was better served by seeking out real world, obviously-successful, mentor figures.
