Mon Frere , congrats !!Very sound advice , but I can't stay here . My plan is to leave end of month . I'll have enough for a week's stay at the YMCA. The 1st proratity is a cash paid daily job, then the rest will fall into place. I know I'm pulling a cirque du soliel highwire act , yet lots of safety nets there. Here in Hammer town lots of rocks and hard places. People here expect me to fail . I

Hey man I'm in Hamilton right now too!

just getting some uni credits upgrades right now, let me know if you (or anyone else who may be reading this thread from Hamilton) wants to meet up! "Veteran" here of the patch with some real experience and knowledge to kick if you want. First year in AB but have made some serious career progression, don't let my age fool ya Wink

OT:
I just found by fluke the biggest and best sports bar in all of Edmonton. It's called Shanks, not far from the West Edmonton Mall. At least a dozen huge screens and great stereo sound. Not to mention there's a casino inside along betting tables for anything sports related as well as horse racing! This place would give any of the big Vegas big sports bar/ sports betting place a run!

Shanks, on 9927 178 street.

For any sports game this is where I'm going to be!

Hey,
Good to hear you'll make the move soon. Remember what I and many others who have made the move been writing here repeatedly : come prepared. That means have a place to stay at lined up. Yes the Hi Hostel on Whyte is where everyone stayed at but it's best to get a room ASAP. Make that your first priority here. Then, get your main and basic tickets ASAP! These are H2S, First Aid and CSTS/PST. Heck you could even go to the Bissell Centre and have them pay for your tickets, this saving about 400$!

http://bissellcentre.org/programs/employment-services/

Then once you have these done go pound the pavement. Go in person to every company in Nisku and Sherwood Park, resume and your tickets in hand and ask to speak to the hiring manager.

Yeah there are daily jobs like Labour Ready but best is to oh straight to Nisku and Sherwood Park.

Let me know when you get here. We'll have drinks. A+.
All the best!

P.S. T'es Qu茅b茅cois ou Francais?

Lol why would a US student visa get you a right to work in Canada? You know they are two separate countries? Have you even read this thread?

Just to update what Im up to. Im sticking with mwding and about to become a lead hand in the next few weeks.

Should be switching to directional within 1-2 years. Might also consider an online Oil and Gas MBA at the same time too (thanks to some advice from forum members).

Thanks to everyone who PMed me advice while I was considering quiting. It can be hard to get prospective sometimes when you are so isolated career wise.

I think I missed that.

Why were you considering quitting it? Is the job too tough?

^ I always been used to social jobs and get promoted fast. I always switched jobs a lot too. As my first slower paced technical job its taken some getting used to although the job itself is all good.

The lack of hussle gets to me sometimes and I hate being a slave wage so thats something Ill have to address down the line. I do eventually want to have my own company/revenue stream.

Yeah MiddleEastern how was that career fair?
[/quote]

The fair was great. Lot of actual recruiters were on site and not receptionists kicking you around. I've met with couple recruiters and passed around 25 resumes for several energy companies. Got a couple of business cards as well. All in all, it was worth the drive and the fare fee. I am hoping to hear from them soon.

First bit back in the oilfield is going good. Signed myself up to fill in for someone next week during my week off, gonna be out here for 4 weeks total. Pull in 5 figure$ then i'm off for the calgary stampede to blow it all Tongue missed eating good and not having to make my bed! Rained all night while I was working, mud everywhere... went and found a couple massive mud pits and got some 4x4ing in. Can't tell what colour my truck is anymore. No shortage of excitement out here, grizzly bear walked into camp yesterday morning. Fingers crossed we don't come face to face!

I'll be heading down to Calgary sometime in the first week of July to do some Stampeding, my 8th year in a row! I"m thinking the 3rd til 6th or something like that, one solid weekend of hardcore boozing and partying. Should we try to organize an RVF meet up down there? I'll have room in my truck if anyone needs a lift there but I can't help you out with places to stay as I'll be crashing with friends.

Who dropped this great post over at MikeCFs blog Dangerandplay.com about their move to the Oil Sands?

Its a cool story and congrats on progressing so far. Im on my phone or Id link it (maybe someone can put it up).

If you want to keep it a secret off this thread maybe just shoot me a PM. I get all emotional seeing people succeed out here haha!

Well done and 1 rep point when I figure out who you are.

Edit - got it.

The Northern Gateway pipeline was approved. Good news for all of the patch. Now lets hope the natives and hippies don't fuck it up for everyone.

Well it looks like I won't be making it down to Stampede this year, the first time I've missed it since I moved out here eight years ago, almost to the day. My hitch ended yesterday, a week earlier than expected, which is why my current job is a bit annoying because I can never make any solid plans. So I'm heading south on 63 tomorrow and should be in Etown in the early afternoon, I'm thinking we should have an RVF meet up sometime this week, maybe Thursday night somewhere on Whyte. The Pint on 81st and 104th seemed decent last time so lets meet there again, just PM me or post on here and we'll figure out what time to meet.

Hey guys, I just had a quick question regarding lifestyle and wanted to get everyone's perspective on it. For those who have moved across country or overseas, do you find yourself wanting to visit home very often? Would you guys ever leave during the heavy season for a week or two, or do you generally wait for spring break-up?

I imagine a lot of you are there with little to no family (like I will be), so I just wanted to get your thoughts. Also, is there a point in time after being out there for a while that the desire to go home lessens? I'm not very worried about missing family as I have lived on my own for the past five years but they were always just a quick drive away.

And finally did any of you leave with a girlfriend back home? I've already talked to mine and we have been moving towards an amicable break when the time comes, if only because I'm not interested in the long distance stuff. I'd be thankful for any thoughts you guys have. (PS, I changed my name from mauds)

Na I don't think about home too much. I call every week or two to catch up but that's about it. I enjoy it out here and am always busy with work or play.

I've gone home once since I've been here for about two weeks. Honestly I missed Canada more when I was in Ireland then I've ever missed Ireland being here. I like Edmonton and the Canadian way of life.

Most people who I have meet like it here and don't get homesick.

And no I didn't have a girlfriend.
