Actually talked to the medic today, she is on dayrate! She is the first there (probably around 6) and last one of site because she has to sign everyone out. (probably leaves around 7pm) So she is easily doing 14 hour days for maybe 500$/day.

500 a day would be the highest I've ever heard of a medic making. I've met ones making 250-400 max

I don't have a class 1, but I've often thought about what it would take to start an oilfield hauling company. I'm no expert in entrepreneurship, but I did some quick math and figured you can start off at a decent size with $500,000. With that you could buy a fleet of used trucks. A lot of truckers also own their own truck and contract out to companies.
I figured if you could secure roughly $1 million you could probably also staff your own mechanics with a garage, office staff (dispatch, coordinator, safety, reception etc.) and start your business from there. I'd just make an office/HQ out of modular c-cans like this.
I can't imagine it would be too difficult getting a bunch of experienced truckers to come haul for your company provided the compensation is attractive. Of course, you can also start out very small if you wanted (just you, a class 1 licence, and a truck) and build a company from there.

The Canadian gov't subsidizes small business loans up to 500,000 requiring only 10% down so that shouldn't be an issue.
I personally know drivers who were making 20,000cad/month last year as staff for oil field hauling. I am thinking about moving to Alberta ( first to Edmonton or Calgary and later maybe even north to oilsands, Fort Mcmurray ? ). Couple of words about me. I am canadian citizen ( by naturalization not by birth / lived in Canada 1990-94 / Toronto, Ontario ). Haven't been to Canada for the last 20 years. For the last 20 years I run ( as a manager ) big warehouses/logistic centers in Poland. Had under my supervision several dozen staff, I am professional user of SAP software for Supply Chain Management ( by the way software products of this german company are also used in warehouses in Canada, so far I know ). In other words I am professional warehouse manager.
Can anybody tell me if I had a chance to get a job in Alberta ( or in the oilsands ) in my field.
my adventages:
- I am canadian citizen ( so do not need to worry about work permit, visa and so on )
- have 20 years experience in my profession
- at the beginning I could accept any job, below my qualifications ( you must not to be picky from the start ), I am used also to hard physical work
my disadvantages:
- I don't have canadian experience in my profession

- I am over 40

Hey guys there is a big job fair taking place in Calgary this Wednesday & Thursday. Most of the heavyweights in the oil&gas industry are coming. There is a $25 signing up fee to attend the event. There is also a credential check to make sure you qualify to meet with the employers. If anyone in Edmonton wants to join the ride to Calgary PM me. I am planning to take off on Thursday first thing the morning (The fair is from 10-4).

Best way to find out is to just come here, as you've probably seen by reading the thread, there's a lot of opportunity out here and unskilled guys are getting good jobs and making good money just by showing up. Since you're experienced in a field that is surely in demand in Alberta, I don't see why you wouldn't get work and your age shouldn't be a problem since you have tons of experience, good luck.

An update on my end:
After almost 2 months here with no luck job wise, finally got 3 offers last week. 2 of which in my field. Started my job last week and for the past 10 days, it's been long days, waking up at 4:30am putting in 12-13 hour days and coming home past 7pm totally exhausted. Today had cramps in my legs as soon as I got home. I've never worked so hard in my life.
Despite this, I'm very happy as I got a job with a great company, in my field. I'm learning a ton each day. It's infinitely more interesting and fulfilling than being in a cubicle in the corporate world!
Yeah the money is good and will get REAL good once get my first ticket but I'm excited as this is not just a J.O.B. but a very lucrative career. It took me 2 months but at the end, persistence paid off and I'm glad I came here in the spring as opposed to going to the Phils for a while and then come back at square one needing to work here. Much better and wiser to be here, work and learn a trade and skill, build a career and then take off with peace of mind and money in the bank.
I will post this weekend, a more detailed post on my 2 months here leading to getting the job I had in mind when I first made the move here.
One piece of advice to anyone new here or looking to make the move:
Come prepared! That means, read this entire thread, at least once, preferably twice, take notes and take action on the golden advices in here. Bring enough $ to last you at least 2 months, ideally 3 months. And above all, be PATIENT!!!

Hey I know this post is already over two years old but I wanted to know if getting a job there is still easy. I'm 19 years old, I'm not a US citizen but I am am studying in California under a student visa. I'm thinking of completing a training as a pipe fitter and then see if I'm lucky enough to land a job there. Any suggestions on what I should do?
