What about his work rate (the amount of punches he throws)? His physical conditioning? His athleticism? His combination of speed, power, and balance?
The grace and class that he carries himself with?
None of those things have impressed you?
Just curious..
What current fighters have impressed you and why?
(excluding Mayweather -- he is impressive for many obvious reasons)

Tactically speaking, what specifically do you think Khan will be able to do that other fighters have not been able to do?
I'll give my views. Firstly, I have to say that I respect him massively for what he did earlier in his career against the likes of Morales and Barrera, but from what I see, Pacquiao's work rate has declined massively since the drugs allegations. I'm not accusing him of anything, it may just be that age caught up with him, but he fought at a pretty slow pace in the Mosley fight, and in the Bradley fight he took the majority of each round off and thought he could win it with late round rallies (I had that fight a lot closer than most people actually, largely for this reason). Before the allegations, he looked almost superhuman and seemed to get stronger as the fights went on, but the last few years he's looked a lot more beatable.
I do think that he has very impressive power, and his footwork to create angles was amazing at his peak, but recently he's been a lot more flat footed, and he hasn't had a stoppage in several fights now. I guess he was always bound to have a fairly short shelf life being the type of fighter that he is, and I think we might just see Bradley edge a decision in this one.
For me current fighters that have impressed me are obviously Mayweather, but also Rigondeaux who I would say is one of the top pound for pound guys today - really can't see anybody around his weight division beating him. I also really like Erislandy Lara, but he probably won't ever be given a fair crack of the whip being Cuban (the Paul Williams decisions is one of the worst I've ever seen). I've also been very impressed with the up and coming Terrence Crawford, who I can see going on to big things as long as Arum will give him the fights.
As for Khan, I can't see him giving Mayweather any trouble. As I said before the only guys I see really giving him problems are Erislandy Lara or Pacquiao. I suppose any big puncher like Thurman has always got a puncher's chance, but then we've already seen Mayweather deal with fighters like that in Corrales.

You just "sense" that Mayweather is due for an upset..
Interesting mathematical approach.
I also like to consider the law of averages sometimes.

Pacquiao has great footwork and conditioning, fast hands, and in many of his fights throws a lot of punches. Here's the problem: he is prone to getting hit and has high cheekbones, which make him susceptible to being cut. Now, you might say, "He's won 55 fights against some pretty solid boxers. Obviously his attributes make up for his weaknesses." The problem is when he faces A-level competition (Marquez, a prime Erik Morales), he often struggles or even loses. The De La Hoya who stepped in the ring with Pacquiao was not an A-level fighter or even a B-level fighter. The main problem with De La Hoya when he fought Pacquiao wasn't that he was past his prime. It was more that he had to cut some serious weight to make 144 or whatever it was, was hooked up to an i.v. before the fight, and was in no condition to be anywhere near a boxing ring. Pacquiao therefore won every round or almost every round then eventually stopped him. Despite all this, Pacquiao's style gave Bradley some serious problems and I expect it to again give him problems come April. If you guys truly believe that Pacquiao is the best or one of the best guys in the sport, I encourage you to bet everything you have on Pacquiao if and when he fights Mayweather and it will only make the odds more favorable to me when Mayweather ends winning almost every round and/or stops him.
Guys who are better pound for pound than Pacquiao are Mayweather, Andre Ward, Gennady Golovkin, arguably Sergio Martinez (I think he's on the way out), and Mikey Garcia, among others. Danny Garcia, Juan Manuel Marquez, Marcos Maidana, Lucas Matthyse, and Keith Thurman could possibly beat him right now at 147. Thurman is a really good offensive boxer, but he showed in his last fight that he is pretty prone to getting hit when he fights better competition.
I think we need either a confirmation or denial that "Dexter Moser" is that Dexter Morgan guy who used to post in the boxing threads and was banned after having something of a meltdown. I suspect that they are the same guy, but who knows.

No denying the Marquez KO, but bringing up Morales is both cherry picking and not a good example. Pac was very clearly a limited fighter in their 1st fight. He improved a bit and made Erik Morales, one of the greatest warriors in boxing history, quit on his ass in the 3rd fight. To me, one of the most sublime moments in boxing history.

Agree on Mayweather, Ward, Golovkin on the P4P rankings, currently. Pac isn't what he used to be, and he's definitely more of an instinctual fighter than the more cerebral types you seem to favor. I guess father time, and his style, have taken its toll, because 3-4 years ago, Garcia, Maidana, Matthysse, and Thurman wouldn't stand a chance against Pac, when he was 2nd to only Mayweather p4p.

*Possibly* beating someone isn't saying much. Most fighters have at least a puncher's chance, so to speak, against anyone else.
At 147 right now, the only guy who'd be solidly favored over Pacquiao is Mayweather, and rightly so. JMM basically a toss-up (as they've proven 4x) and we'll see with Bradley, although I think Pac will be about -160 or so when lines come out. There's no way any of Garcia, Maidana, Matthysse, or Thurman are favored right now in a hypothetical matchup.

I'm not sure whether I believe it, but I was told by someone in 2011, someone with strong connections to the industry, that Pac was definitely on PED's for a while. I'm guessing the period when he looked unstoppable, circa 2008-10. Could be bullshit, but this person had no reason to lie to me. It could just be industry speculation, but he was very certain!
If you've never met a forum member - I'll assume you're lying

George Zimmerman signs up for a celeb boxing match against whoever. The Game offers to fight him.
Quote:George Zimmerman – the man acquitted of murdering unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin in July 2013 – has signed up to take part in a celebrity boxing match.
Damon Feldman, the promoter organising the bout with the star, has confirmed that the fight will take place on 1 March, and that Zimmerman, who is, according to TMZ ‘open to fighting anyone… Even black people’, will donate any earnings he makes from the bout to charity.
George Zimmerman Found Not Guilty Of Trayvon Martin
Feldman is yet to find an opponent, but said he wasn’t looking to promote the event as "a race thing".
"We haven't discussed purple, yellow, white, black," he added.
But one rapper of African-American decent, who has a tattoo of Zimmerman’s victim Martin on his leg, has offered to step into the ring.
"I would not be boxing for me," The Game told TMZ. "I'd be boxing for the legacy of Trayvon Martin and for his family."
"I would box him to knock him out.
"I would definitely take pleasure in it. It's legal, and I want to show him you can solve your disputes without a weapon."
Standing at a towering 6’5” and weighing in at 240lbs, the Game would certainly present a challenge.
Zimmerman was found not guilty of all charges levied against him, after he fatally shot unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin during a fight in February 2012 inside a gated community in Sanford. The 30-year-old Hispanic man claimed that he had killed Martin with a weapon in an act of self-defence.
Zimmerman remained without charge for 44 days after the shooting occurred, which led to nationwide protests and sparked furious debate over racial profiling and the right to use weapons in self-defence. Further demonstrations broke out after Zimmerman was acquitted in 2013.
Federal authorities are currently reviewing the entire case to decide whether Martin’s civil rights were violated.

He won't have any problem finding people who are willing to fight him, both because of people's extreme dislike of him and the fact that he is horribly out of shape and should be very easy to stop in Round 1.

Great post, very insightful!
I didn't agree with all of it but I enjoyed reading it.
All the guys you mentioned could probably beat Pacquiao right now. But, Pac is a shell of his former self..
In his prime, how many of these guys could beat him?
Who knows? They would be some great fights for sure.
I'm not saying Pac would beat all of them. I'm saying, lets not pretend that Pac is the same fighter today, that he was 5 years ago. 5 years ago he was on a much higher level. 5 years ago, some of those guys would not want to fight him.
So, the question is.. In their primes, who was better?
Okay,
What I really want to say is this:
The "x factor" in boxing is heart, toughness, desire, competitiveness, and athleticism.
These "intangibles" can be almost impossible to measure.
I think Pac, in his prime, was a better athlete than all of those guys, (except Mayweather).
I also think Pac, in his prime, had more heart and desire than all of those guys.
And, he was certainly in better condition than those guys. With more speed and power than most of them.
In my opinion, I think Pac would have beaten nearly all of those guys.
Not because he was a better boxer. He was a comparable boxer, but, he had the hunger and drive of a 3rd world refugee, was a better competitor, had more heart, and fought not only for himself but for his entire culture
I think these "intangibles" would have given Pac an edge over most of those guys.

I like your post, but everybody always underestimates Danny Garcia. Las Vegas loves making him an underdog (Matthysse, Kendall Holt) or sometimes a huge underdog (Amir Khan) and all the guy does is win. I can only imagine how much money the sportsbooks have lost on that guy. I wouldn't be so sure that Pacquiao could have beaten him five years ago or ever.

Agree that there's a lot of PED use in boxing. Lots of guys use clenbuterol to make weight. Erik Morales got busted for using weight loss drugs. And of course, JM Marquez got RIPPED at 40, after adding a noted PED pusher to his camp. Gee, what an amazing coincidence!! The night Marquez flattened Pacquiao, Morales tweeted "The Mexican pharmacy beat the Phillapino Pharmacy". He quickly removed the tweet.
The problem is, like everything else wrong in boxing, there's no central point of control to clean up the sport for its own sake, as in the NFL or MLB. Each short-sited sanctioning body will continue to milk the cow a little longer by having multiple champions (WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, etc - and now each of them has its Diamond Champion, Interim Champion, etc), allowing PED use, and all kinds of crap. I wish there was a way to regulate and clean up boxing. But I just don't see how. Unless 2-3 people die inside of a month and congress takes some action. Unlikely.

I've seen Pacquiao as high as -220 and as low as -180. With those odds, there's no way I'm making the trip to Las Vegas. With Pacquiao as the underdog, or even a -120 favorite or something, I would go. I'm really not sure about this one and don't want to risk it. Also, it appears that Mayweather vs. Maidana is a done deal. I was hoping for Mayweather vs. Khan and the Maidana vs. Broner rematch as the co-feature so that I could bet under 12 rounds on the Mayweather fight and a straight bet on Maidana in the other fight. With Maidana as his opponent, odds will be horrible for people betting on Mayweather and I'm really not sure if the fight will go the distance or not, so I wouldn't bet the over/under rounds.

RE: Official Boxing Thread for Videos, History, Interviews, Analysis, etc.
The spirit of every jilted, bitter ex-girlfriend seems to have overtaken Amir Khan:
Quote:“Following the announcement by Floyd Mayweather that he will be facing Marcos Maidana on May 3rd I would like to clarify my situation for my fans and members of the media,” Khan said. “Despite having signed my part of the agreement to fight Floyd in early December, I’ve been preparing myself for some time that the match up with him wasn’t going to happen, as I announced on Twitter a few days ago. Therefore, this announcement did not come as a surprise.
“I am, however, very disappointed with Floyd and his team for not providing any explanation as to why he delayed the announcement for so long and ultimately avoided the fight with me.”
“Clarification, if he was not fighting me, would have allowed me to look over my options and pursue another path, rather than the ultimate delay to my career this has caused,” said Khan, who has not fought since last April because he was sitting tight for the fight with Mayweather rather than actually earning it the way Maidana did by beating Adrien Broner in December. “It has been a very frustrating period as I’d been due to fight in December against Devon Alexander. However, I was strongly advised to not take this fight as I would be facing Floyd this May -- and therefore signed my side of the contract on this belief.”
“Floyd was keen to engage with the fans and so decided to let them choose who he should fight in his next bout,” Khan said. “I clearly won his official poll, by a significant margin, but for unknown reasons he decided to ignore the fans vote and failed to keep his word, disappointing many fight fans who took the time to vote.”
“I genuinely wish Marcos and Floyd all the best for their fight -- two great fighters,” Khan said. “As a team we have now moved on and are looking at different options. I’ve been training very hard since my last fight. I’m a fighter who wants to face the very best out there and have never ducked any opponent.
“I’m focused and ready for my next outing. We currently have a few options on the table at the moment and my team are working alongside Golden Boy Promotions to announce my next fight within the next 10 days. I can’t wait to get back in the ring and am determined to put on a great show for my loyal fans who have waited a long time to see me back in action -- and I’m very excited about what’s yet to come this year. Thank you for all your continued support.”

Sour grapes on Khan's part. If he were an older fighter exiting his prime, I'd say it were more prudent to holdout and wait for a payday rather than stay busy and maybe suffer a loss that would knock him out of the Floyd sweepstakes. But he's, what, 26? And he draws a big crowd relative to his accomplishments (British fans are good like that). He should've stayed busy and maybe could've faced Floyd later this yr or in 2015. GB is stacked at 147.

Khan did nothing to deserve a fight w/ Floyd. He's lost 2 of his last 4 fights! Since when does that get you a fight with the reigning pound for pound king of the last 20 yrs??
Martinez SHOULD be favored over Cotto...but it depends on which Martinez shows up. He's been awfully fragile lately, almost like he's turning to dust before our eyes. If he really has gotten as old as his last two fights suggest, Cotto could take him. But if he beats Cotto, he's in the catbird seat - he could make $$$$ fighting Golovkin, Alvarez, even Floyd might take a chance at his middleweight crown, if a catch-weight is agreed. Martinez's next fight will earn him $10M --- IF he gets past Cotto!

I agree that Martinez didn't look all that great in his last fight. Although some people believe otherwise, I think he looked good in the Chavez fight. He was also fighting with a broken dominant hand from about the forth round on. I made some serious money on that fight. I've been debt-free since. Even if Martinez is rusty, injured, or has an off night, I think he beats Cotto. The fight could, however, be pretty close if one or more of those factors is present. If the Martinez/Mayweather fight could be made, there is no way that Mayweather will go up to middleweight. Martinez has stated that he can go as low as 150 pounds. He is a natural junior middleweight who went up to middleweight, I believe for the Pavlik fight. (A healthy, well-trained Pavlik could have beaten Martinez. No doubt in my mind). If Martinez/Mayweather ever happens, the highest weight it would probably be would be 154.
