If you are a Marine or sailor they make sense.

For sure on girls they are a terrible mistake. You can now see plenty of women in their 30s and 40s with tattoos and they look plain awful. So do the tattoos...

The thing is they no longer have any meaning for men. They have lost their signaling ability because every other guy has one.

You know your tattoo doesn't communicate that your're a "bad boy" effectively when you visit your accountant and find that he has a full arm tattoo.

Real "bad boys" or criminals need to think of a different signaling mechanism.

I met an English guy at a bar, his body covered in tattoos, he was one of the most beta guys I've ever met, hmm. Also you can be alpha without being a criminal.

Not completely against tattoos, but I've always have been suspicious of tatted people just putting dumb shit on their bodies for the vanity of it all. I see too many people just getting these things for no reason at all. Just to say that they "did it" or they thought something "looked cool".

And it's kind of sad that they are becoming a lost cause because I see the art side of it all as extremely meaningful/powerful when used to represent a man's ego and pride. Many choose to pay homage to their loved ones or illustrate personal/group accomplishment through tattoos, and I see nothing wrong with that. In fact, this was their original intention...as a sign of individuality.

Getting tattoos has not changed, but the concept of the "individual" and what constitutes accomplishment and pride has changed. People believe they can buy accomplishment and all of the pride that comes with it without putting in any of the time, which is why outside of the context of personal/group achievement, I think this is one of the best ways to distinguish between low and high value individuals. If they're literally putting signs on their body, illustrating to you what their character constitutes, you'd be an idiot not to read into that. Take it for what it is and go have a drink with the guy whose arm is covered with an anchor and the names of his fallen comrades, and learn some shit from him. On the flip side, treat the girl littered in dragon and butterfly tattoos in accordance with what she is, a person who makes terrible decisions.

People have always gotten tattoos just because it was a cool design. Not sure where this attitude of looking down on someone who doesnt have a deep, significant story for each piece came from. Its common with people who would of never put ink on their skin if it wasnt so popular and accepted. I dont think these hipsters and cakes no the history of them. Its easy to seperate the real from fake posers. Like that hipster model in the beard thread who had 3 dots on his face lol.

If someone's going to get a tattoo that they'll have to look at for the rest of their life, I would think it should convey something a little deeper than just something that they thought "looked cool" at some point in their life. But you're right, many people get tattoos for no other reason than the design. Are we wrong to judge them as impulsive?
