Padang in Sumatra Indonesia is probably the most boring city Ive been to. Not only is it boring, its a shit hole.

Im sure there are worse places though, but guys, avoid Padang.

These are my two as well. Baghdad is crumbling. It's funny what counts for the upscale part of town.

Afghanistan is like Bedrock. Everything is made out of rocks and they have animals doing things that we use machines for.

From a living standards / economical point of view, it has got to be northern Ethiopia, Tigray region. Of course, I was there for a water sanitation project, so it is to be expected. But still, when the markets are *selling* you old rubber tires / chair legs, you know something's wrong.

Another miserable place is a city in Northern Vietnam called Thai Nguyen. Absolutely miserable weather, shitty amenities, conservative people, everything closes down by 10:30, dirty/polluted as fuck. Ironically, I ended up living here for 9 months and had an amazing time :/

To me, a shithole has the worst of the modern world and the worst of the undeveloped world combined in one. So take Lagos, for example:

Horrific car accidents

I've been to other parts of Africa and enjoyed myself, but Lagos is a next level shithole.

Much of the Lagos stuff is true in India. Try any 2nd tier city in India. There's zero nightlife and they're super conservative. The places are so boring that there's almost no bars - guys drink in darkened restaurants. Even the prostitutes are ugly!

Delhi's airport is pretty nice now apparently!

For the prices I was paying for everything, I'd have to say Athens, Greece Sept 2009. I remember leaving the breezy fresh isles of Santorini & Mykonos as the temps really got up there upon arriving in Athens. Also, the air quality was probably as bad as a major industrialized Asian city & quality of everything = ugh. Stayed in a pretty nice hotel though (very clean innovative restroom) at $60.00 bucks per night yet was in the middle of a drug dealing/gypsie hooker neighborhood haha.

I don't remember the Delhi airport being nice. What I do remember is that the second I walked out that I couldn't breathe because of the dust and pollution!

One time I got lost driving around new orleans(pre katrina) and I thought I was in a different country. Pretty scary for a first world country. Same when I got lost in DC driving around again. I no longer drive when in major US cities.

I also thought Antigua was a shithole as well as Santiago.

Tolu, Colombia. The whole city lives from begging, and the place is a neglected wasteland. If it weren't for tourism because of past glories, the place would have imploded already in misery. Nobody wants to work, and there's no work. Only a polluted sea and a beach made up of black and dark gray sand.

Medellin, Colombia. Okay, let's be serious. Has any of you been to neighborhoods like El Coco, Barrio Triste, Villahermosa, La Villa, Barrio Antioquia, Belen Rincon, Altavista, El Trianon? (This are the ones I have been personally to. There are others Like Castilla, 12 de Octubre, Populacho, Vallejuelos, and other hellholes) It's not uncommon to see 6 year-olds smoking crack in those places. Or watch them sniffing a whole bottle of glue, along thousands of people along the riverside. Or maybe you can see them stabbing eachother for some old shoes. Medellin is fun, as long as you keep to a few neighborhoods, anything else is a big pile of human crap.

Little boring yeah.. but it's got beaches, it's not to crowded, it's the gateway for the best surf in the world. Far from a shithole. Medan is far more close to a shithole for sumatra.

New Delhi is the biggest shithole I've ever been. God knows why my uncle chose to go to India to get a liver transplant! Delhi is dirty, stinky and there are just way too many dudes. Furthermore , the food is very spicy, and it's just a matter of time till you get food poisoning. Most chicks are ugly in Delhi, but there were some decent looking ones inside the airport.

I was pretty surprised at how much of a shit hole just about all over Peru is outside of Lima, and even a lot of parts of Lima itself. Still though, it has a lot of life and vibe, unlike Guayaquil. I didn't realize that Lima is really the only big city in Peru. I traveled from Guayaquil to Lima and everything in between was SUPER poor and dirty and really small. But regardless, I stand by Guayaquil being the shitiest shithole I've ever been to. Lima isn't so bad and the women look quit a bit better than Ecuadorians, still nothing to write home about. There is better quality in the states. I'm gonna bust out a data sheet at the end of my trip instead of starting one at the start of my trip like I was doing before.

I think as far as what is considered a shithole, it all depends on who you are asking. I definitely saw much more beat up places in Brazil than Guayaquil, but Brazil still has so much culture and vibe and is such a great place, that even though some of the places were dumps, I still wouldn't consider it a shithole. I'm not sure cause I never really spent time in a huge favela, but I suspect that even though many of the spots are dumps in the favelas, you could probably still have a great time there at one of the parties, therefore I wouldn't necisarily consider it a shithole.
