^ I wonder if the Nazis failed to invade Switzerland solely because of their love for the Swiss banking system, or if it also had something to do with fearing battle against well-armed local militias in mountainous terrain. I'm guessing a combination of both.

Well, Mexico already invaded and won. They're a lot nicer than Nazis. Now I live in fear of the Canadians.

But don't worry, at almost one gun per person, we're safe for a long time!

Here's how guns helped safety in Colorado just today--those nagging relatives won't be mouthing off again!!

I saw this today...

The Westboro Baptist Chuch has decided to bring their message of hate to our state. They are staying at the Comfort Inn in Naugatuck and have been granted a permit to assemble at the vigil for Sandy Hook in Newtown this evening that is taking place in Naugatuck. I, for one, have no intention of allowing them to spread their radical ethos. Please come to the Naugatuck vigil and prevent these monsters from gaining entry by peaceful means.
REMEMBER FOR THOSE THAT GO STOPPING THEM SHOULD BE BY PEACEFUL MEANS!!!

That's not going to turn out well. Shit like this is what brings the REAL CT rednecks out of hibernation. Lets see how it turns out.

I'm curious to see what happens.

I made a post earlier in this thread believing that the pricks going to picket the children's funerals were from the Westboro Baptist Church northeast of Cincinnati - I stand corrected. They're from the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, as I understand.

My mother is the type that watches the news a lot, she was telling me that biker dudes show up at the military funerals to counter the Westboro nutjobs.

From a local CT law firm...

"I have heard that Westboro is planning on picketing the Newtown funerals. If anyone is arrested as a result of standing to block those heartless bastards or anything more "appropriate" to them my firm will represent you for free."

Among 1st world nations, The United States produces the most crazy, murderous motherfuckers!

Why?

Because we have the most pressure, the most stress, and the most exposure to dysfunction.

This place will drive you crazy if you are not rock solid mentally and emotionally.

I would actually argue the reverse on that one. We're given everything easy, food, water, shelter.

Overall Americans believe they are entitled to stuff and don't understand the concept of to give up to get something. The kids from the baby boomers were taught that they deserve the world for nothing, then they find out you have to claw fight and pull the right strings to improve. At this point they become depressed. The issue? By then they are laden with debt and are now force to work hard, recipie for disaster.

The westboro people are brilliant in their own way. Imagine if you were a group of lawyers that didn't want to really do anything productive so you come up with a scam. The scam is that you pretend to be the most odious, obnoxious, attention getting group of people possible and then sue when people obstruct you from exercising your first amendment rights. They play on a stereotype that is present in the popular mind, that of fundamentalist christians rednecks and then turn it up to 11 by carefully crafting the most offensive signs and saying the most offensive things possible. If their goal is to make every single group as mad as possible, they do a great job! They piss off christians for not being charitable. They piss off gays and liberals for hating gays. They piss off everyone for hating the military and now they are pissing off everyone, especially parents, by protesting the funeral of these kids.

I really can't think of a way to make more people upset, the only thing that would come close is if you staged a parade of guys in ss uniforms with another guy dressed as hitler goose stepping their way around a jew-heavy area like hollywood and loudly proclaiming that you were all for child molesters and things would be better if women were not allowed out of the kitchen.

Basically if you are a complete sociopath and want to make some money without doing any work, the westboro method is a pretty good way to do it. Think of this as a real life version of IRT who managed to create a business model out of trolling people in real life.

Yes, these things come easy -- but what about strong families, strong community ties, friendship, support, a sense of belonging, a sense of purpose, faith, hope???

These things do not come so easy in America. We don't focus on these things, we only focus on profit!

Shit, for many poor people, even food and shelter don't come easy. Many people struggle to pay the rent and put food on the table. This type of stress can cause people do do some drastic things.

I know this, many Americans are depressed. We are over worked and over stressed.

Many people are lonely and without love in their life.

America can be a cruel place if you don't have a support system in place.

America is a pressure cooker, not a melting pot. its deep tension bred from exploiting racial, religious and social divisions kept everybody in the competitive rat race which help breed the most prosperous society in human history. But with that prosperity certain checks and balances were supposed to be put in place by its people to ease the foot off the gas and open up the steam valve on the figurative pressure cooker.

People in the states are fucked. The guns do dip shit these people will break each other’s necks over a split coffee. The gun argument is a mega herring. Nobody wants to point to Society at large and how fucked up Americans are collectively.

This is why in this madness of this tragedy the dialogue has been complete bastardized and flipped. Each vying interest has coloured the situation in the own light with neither pointing to the obvious factors which continue to lead to these tragedies. Nobody wants to say how they fucked up or at fault themselves. It’s all on you.

The solution to issues such as this is for Americans to collectively take it upon themselves to take some blame into how they all collectively let their society become so corrupted. You can't have any progressive movement until either a minority takes head via force or through a collective awakening through the majority. But this never, ever, ever, happens. People would rather veer towards the inevitable conflict and ramped up tension that will come from The State/Govt (who has its own interests in monopolizing force and power) using its own political angel to push its own perceived solution to the problem. Americans would rather continue down this path then face their own Conscience, this is the madness of humans that we collectively will fail to face our own ills an d faults head on, we will deflect and blame others until the problems consumes as whole. It is a very bizarre human trait but the Rubicon/ line in the sand has been clearly been drawn with this issue.

All I can say to American friends on here is to get ready. Choose to get bogged down in no-where arguments of solutions which will never come. Policy will never touch the true roots of gun violence from the top, nor will America the largest arms exporters in the world whom has vast military campaigns worldwide which kill Children every single day take any drastic steps to become an honest broker in limiting its external issues to focus on its issues internally. The American organism is sick and is dying and its only chance to survive and thrive is if every American on their own looks into themselves on how they can best fix themselves to help the American organism as whole to survive.

The next 10-15 years will radically change America (and the world) forever. No "modern" empire has lasted past 250 years - All got way too fucked up and started to mess up internally weakening its holds and positions they held externally.

The fact about its low crime rate is completely true, and even what there is can partially be attributed to immigration (sorry).

How many guns are there really in Switzerland?

However, it's misleading to say that everyone has guns there. First of all, they're #4 with 45 guns per 100 residents, not #1 like United States with 88 guns per 100 residents.

Ways of getting a gun in Switzerland

Second of all, consider how they get their guns. The government gives them those military rifles because Switzerland doesn't have a standing army - rather, it relies on a people's militia. The rifle issued is only there for the purposes of surviving an immediate attack if the soldier encounters one while traveling to the official armory. The gun also comes with a sealed container containing 50 bullets, which is not to be opened under any circumstances other than a declaration of war and having to travel to the said armory. Even this has recently been softened, and now only special forces members are issued guns with ammo for this purpose, although militia members are still obligated to visit designated shooting centers annually for training.

Of course, a private person can still own and/or carry a non-military-issued gun for his own reasons, with a proper permit that involves certifications and background checks. This is the case mainly in people who work in security.

Differences in motivation for gun ownership

So whereas the people of USA buy guns, thinking that they'll need them, that they provide social status, or whatever else, the Swiss are issued their guns. Doesn't sound very weapon-loving. If the government didn't give them guns, most of them wouldn't care enough to get one.

Difference in motivation for allowing guns

Whereas Switzerland allows its people (and even obligates them) to have guns, it does so to defend the country against a possible foreign aggressor. The Swiss people are the army. Their guns are aimed at other countries. Doesn't this seem reasonable? If someone invades you, your citizens are ready to fight.

In contrast, the USA allows its people to have guns so that they can fight against the government if it becomes a tyranny. Their guns are aimed at their own country. I have heard of many countries that allow guns as personal liberty, or as method of defense against enemies, but as a method of defense against one's own government almost never. This reflects an universal paranoia that seems inherent to the American way of life today.

Conclusion: Because of all these unique characteristics, Switzerland cannot be used as a case for proving the benefits or disproving the harm of gun ownership.

Good post lad.

But you guys are all avoiding the real problem, it's not your guns (as much as I'm not a fan of people waving around guns), it's your culture sidelining men. An epidemic throughout the western world.

@Bojangles You mean an epidemic throughout the UNITED STATES. Please don't put Canada and Europe under the same flag. There are barely any "incidents" like this in our part of the western world.

@handsome creepy eel, good post about Switzerland where I like to add that it a great strategic move also.
In World War 1, the Germans had a really hard time crossing through Belgium for exact the same reason. They were getting massive resistance from locals owning their own guns. They couldn't set foot in any place small or big without having the risk of getting shot by an angry citizen.

In fact the Germans were so desperate that they resorted to mass killing (aka The Rape of Belgium) to force the surrender of the Belgium citizens long after the Belgium army was already defeated.

I didnt mean the massacre per se Neil, but in a country like the USA that's an effect of the sidelining of men in the wider western world.

RE: 27 Dead, Including 18 Children In Elementary School Shooting In Newtown, Conn.
Yes we have pressure and stress but much of this is self imposed. I agree with the mental part, you have to ignore the media.

Family sense of belonging etc is the by product of "generation me" or individualism. We're all taught that everyone is being selfish... So people act selfishly... So everyone becomes selfish... Downward community spiral.

The best course of action in that situation is to realize its a money makers heaven. If you can enhance someone's life as a service you'll become wealthy. In addition, when you help someone you actually feel better yourself.

On the poor spot, of course it is always god awful to be on the low end but you can't make that comparison world wide. Being born in maybe Europe could be better but overall you can still find ways to get by here. Compare this to a place like a favela in brazil and you're done for life.

Even today you can make a few hundred bucks on the side a month (that's rent in many other countries) if you're willing to sacrifice.

As some know, I used to live in a car and spent more than 70% well below poverty level, the funny part? No one will believe it if they meet me in person. The reason why is one of the secrets to being successful is blending in with successful people. If you want to make more money or get more girls the solution is this. Delete all people who make less than you from your phone, delete all men who are not players from your phone. Do this for a year, something positive will happen.

In terms of America being a dying organism I'll take the reverse. If you believe America is dying well? Go invest your cash in the country that you believe will succeed. Catch 22. The only place with that type of liquidity... The USA. If you are in New Zealand you can't even sell your products to the USA govnt, you have to be acquired by a US company by in large.

I will denounce the USA and its opportunities when we are no longer the most free country in the world. Don't get me wrong, the culture is shit, but for every downside there is an upside, in this case it is money. Hell i would wager 99% of this forum with cash makes the majority of their money in western currency.

I believe you are misinterpreting. This is exactly what successful people do by default. It is a drift. If you look at your phone and say, this guy is trying to get to the same place I am trying to get to, you keep them in. If they are moving in the opposite direction you move them out.

What you do is offer something to people who can offer you something and keep the ball moving in the same direction. When living like shit you make sure you have something to offer to the guys you want to become.

In the case you describe, if you put me back in that same situation today I would do the following. Learn how to fix Rolex watches and iPhones. Rich people need iPhones and Rolex watches. You make friends through this side hustle and cash as well. One of them will like you as a person, you have a new contact and by default someone drops off. Many other avenues as well.

Even with the advent of social media, your hard touches stay roughly the same. It's not like you simply hit delete today right now, you look honestly at your prospects and say this is the best bet and drift in that direction slowly hanging out with the group you want to be more a part of.

The two guys who helped me the most also got something from me as well. Free labor. I worked 40 hrs a week for free to learn and get my foot in a door, didn't bitch once and just have them a fake address.

The text reads like a cunt comment from ms but I believe it is reality. Over time we become like the people we associate with.

You can see this even in your Florida thread. You were willing to give a guy a fake employment contact because you know he is part of RVF (positive association). It's the same idea.

It's just a game of who likes you, get the people you want to become to like you and pay that back if you see talent as well.

Came across this Heinlein quote:

When everyone has a gun, guns are no longer seen as talismans by weak, frightened, and unstable men seeking a sense of self-validation, but as killing machines that are to be handled with the utmost caution and care.

RE: 27 Dead, Including 18 Children In Elementary School Shooting In Newtown, Conn.
The NRA speaks...

"The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again."

http://news.msn.com/us/nra-breaks-silenc...-massacres

As of now, the organization hasn't laid out specifics as to what it wants to do to help prevent these kinds of incidents. They've taken a beating on social media, and had to shut down their Facebook page. They've remained silent up until now out of respect, and frankly, they've had to figure out just how to address this. Usually, they respond immediately after a shooting. They're the natural whipping boy after shootings (which isn't totally fair), but with largely children being the targets of this one, there was pretty much nothing they could say. Joe Scarborough, the host of "Morning Joe" on MSNBC, made a 10 minute statement a couple of days ago which I watched online yesterday. He's a former Congressman, and received the highest rating you can get from the NRA. Even he changed his tune on this one, because it felt more personal (which is usually the thing thats people to back off of a previously held position). He's a father of 4 I think, and one of his kids has Asperger's. It's the absolutists on both sides of the debate that have the loudest voices. Each side accuses the other of arguing on emotion, devoid of logic. Both are right. All guns aren't going to disappear, while it's equally ridiculous to believe that there should be no restrictions to acquiring any kind of weapon you want. Scarborough focused on assault weapons and high-capacity mags, and that's where the discussion should start. There's skepticism on the Hill regarding the NRA's sincerity, so we'll need to see exactly what they intend to do to prevent future mass shootings. In the past, the NRA has used intimidation against candidates and Congressmen if they didn't feel their stance on guns wasn't in line with the organization. They'd fund opponents to run against them. If the NRA takes the lead on softening their stance on certain issues regarding guns, everyone else will fall in line. Let's see how far they're willing to budge.

"The best kind of pride is that which compels a man to do his best when no one is watching."

Generally these shooters keep firing until they meet armed resistance, when they either get shot, kill themselves, or give themselves up in the face of superior force.

George Carlin once said something along the lines of, "If you're born on planet Earth, you get a ticket to the freak show... If you're born in America, you get a front row seat."

I'm hardcore anti-gun, I've shot revolvers and a 9mm twice, and shot skeet once. Very fun.

I would bet the answer to this question is nearly zero, and I think to some extent, as gun owners, we are to blame for this.

Most anti-gun bullshit stems from a fear of the unknown that is due to limited and artificial exposure to guns, usually presented by a source that has an anti-gun agenda.

As gun owners, we have a bad habit of going totally defensive at the slightest threat which in some ways strengthens the anti-gun position. In reality, when people start their bullshit, the first thing we ought to do is make a peace offering and invite them to come shoot, which kills two birds with one stone. It allows gun owners to portray themselves as generous and open rather than hostile or combative. It then allows the anti gun person to have exposure to a gun in a neutral-positive context.

The few times I've tried, it's always yielded positive results.

As a teacher, I've been preparing a long winded thread in response to Newtown, but the one sentiment I have is that this is not a gun problem.

It will be interesting to see what they propose, but I'm not holding my breath for meaningful change from these guys. The best they could do is come out in support of a ban on assault (automatic) weapons, high-capacity magazines and armor-piercing rounds...but I doubt it will happen. More likely they will offer increased funding for gun safety classes and agree to limited background checks at gun shows or other relatively toothless reforms.

You can still be pro-gun and oppose widespread private ownership of automatic weapons---but that badly need message will never get heard from the NRA.

How are you defining 'hardcore anti gun'? I support bans on automatic weapons, high-capacity magazines and armor-piercing bullets---but am fine with ownership of shotguns, bolt-action rifles and semi-automatic handguns...does this make me "anti-gun"?

Part of the problem around this debate is that terms like "anti-gun" get thrown around with such ease---but very few people you meet are completely "anti"-anything at all. Some nuance from you is in order here.
