For guys that are used to having a semi-casual/rock style when going out (e.g. flannel or denim shirts with or without t-shirt underneath) and are wondering about trying out a new style: give a shot at better quality formal cotton shirts.

I recently bought a couple of those, one in black and one in white. Although they are not casual, they are pretty versatile and can be worn with jeans, chinos, dress pants, sports jacket or blazer or simply your winter coat.

This is not really something new, but I had personally underappreciated the value of wearing a good shirt and the confidence boost. Can also say I notice a difference in getting attention. I feel like I stand out more. As with everything else, fit is king.

I am having trouble finding non-hipster/ non- metrosexual/ non-modern clothing. At least, I think I am going to the wrong stores. If I want a suit, I go to Macy's or a similar store. However, for anything casual man wear, there's HM, Old Navy, Academy, and that's about it. So far, most stores I go to, the clothing selection is questionable. I want to dress more masculine. I dont want skinny jeans, but I dont want too big of jeans. I don't want those stylistic shirts with stripes or girly like technique. I want something simple, yet doesn't make me look like I just threw it on from a thrift store. I'm slim with some muscle, but not bulking muscle.

H&M, Old Navy, and other outlets like that are fashion-forward stores. They stock their own brand and are always designed based on the current fashion trends. You want something more "timeless" while staying casual? Do it piece-meal or go to department stores. JC Penny sells Levi's Jeans. Doesn't get much more classic-yet-casual than that. Get some plain v-neck or crew neck T-shirts, can buy that shit at TJMaxx in 3-packs. Nice flannel shirts can be found at any department store or an outdoors outlet. If you want cheap dress shirts go to Men's Warehouse or similar menswear - they also sell nice sweaters and things like that.

Also, don't go to Macy's for suits. Even if you are trying to get a cheap suit at least go to Men's Warehouse or something where you have a better idea of the materials, quality, and on-site tailoring. You can still get a full off the racks suit there for like $300 or less with some custom tailoring.

You sound like a basic chick's profile on a dating site. "I'm a homebody but like nights out. I like working out but don't mind being lazy. Etc."

Would appreciate some advice here.
I am 21, 6'2'', 170. Dark features but light skin. Looking to adopt a "look" that I like.
I know this sounds kind of funny but I thought it would be cool to dress like the cigar smoking rich drug dealers with a button down to shirt and pleated khakis with dress shoes. Problem is I am skinny so loose pants don't look good on me. The other option is jeans, chukkas, and a peacoat/leather jacket. I like this because I am lazy and this outfit looks fine without frequent cleaning and lasts a long time. Thing is im not the rugged "bad boy" type. Which do you prefer?

For a young guy under 25 or even under 30,, the bar is not set high. Most guys dress like shit. Get some well fitting dark blue jeans(not tight not baggy), t-shirts in solid colors Iike white/grey/black, and most important, some good shoes. I recommend a boot like Allen Edmond's Dalton or a dark brown Chelsea, depending on your tastes. For a dressier look get a cotton oxford in white or light blue. Make sure to get it altered if you are in shape since most shirts are made for average sized Americans(big).

Doesn't have to be expensive either. Hit up Uniqlo for selvedge jeans made with Japanese denim for $40-50, or Levi's 501/511. Find a maker that makes t-shirts that flatter your body for $10-20. Could be h&m or gap or JCrew or whatever fits your budget. Quality shoes are more expensive but can last a decade or more. Can always find deals on eBay (still new) or wait for sales.

For real casual look a low-profile not-very-colorful sneaker or tennis show can work, but don't restrict yourself to sneakers. You'll look better with a casual shoe. Think light brown open laced shoes, maybe something brogue:





Some suede desert shoes or chukkas are also an easy casual shoe that looks a little more dressed up than sneakers:





These shoes will ALL go great with a pair of dark blue jeans.

Yeah, the difference between sneakers and casual shoes is huge. I could wear any kickass outfit and it would not look right at all even with the nicest high sneakers.

One advice about casual shoes: get those with rubber soles. You get the comfort of sneakers with the elegance of shoes. The suede stalin posted are good casual shoes and with rubber soles you d feel like you are wearing sneakers.

If you just can't leave your sneakers at home, either become a famed athlete or just forget about fashion.

Being rich and/or smart =/= knowing (or caring) how to dress.

There's also something to be said about "uniforms." That is, people who are in the public eye often tend to have to cultivate a certain look and maintain that look. Steve jobs always wore those turtle necks, dad jeans, and those ugly ass white new balance sneakers. Always. That was his "look" and it became recognizable. Just like Trump and the red tie, or zuckerberg and his plain grey t-shit, jeans, and nikes or whatever he wears. He dresses like a typical level I programmer working in a bullpen. That's part of his image and help him appeal to his audience. There's a certain social science to it and it's not exactly accidental.

To each their own and all that, but to me not one of those outfits look good and usually almost anything looks good on a professional model in a good photo. I just don't get the appeal of dressing down suit pieces so much to the point where they are essentially streetwear. Looks tryhard at best.

To word it another way, every one of those outfits would look better with a different shirt and shoes.

Agreed. Suit with sneakers is an inferior look to suit with dress shoes. Why do you need to casualize a full two piece suit, which is meant to be dressier clothing? Never seen suit with sneakers done well in real life.
