Say what you want about Penn, but he's respected in Hollywood circles. He was also once considered a badass. She treated him like she was the prom queen and he was the school reject.

My guess is that all the other male actors she's interested in are saying "If she ate Sean Penn alive, think of what she would do to me."

If she was 24, maybe an A-lister would be willing to risk it, but who wants to potentially be embarrassed by an older woman? Probably not Brad Pitt or anyone like that.

Coincidentally, I just heard that DiCaprio, who is 44, has a new girlfriend and like his past girlfriends, is not over the age of 25. Theron used to be that under-25 woman who got attention from the DiCaprio's of the world, now she doesn't.

As was said, it's a smart PR move. Countless women aged 35 and up will say "OMG, that's so me! I can't find a man who will step up!!!". However there is a far greater chance that instead of looking like Theron, they will resemble the infamous Barren Ghoul:

That and the fact that she, like Sandra Bullock, and Angelina Jolie specifically took their virtue signalling to an extreme by adopting these third world pets. That's what they are: pets. They will say anything and everything. It's not like entertainment journalism involves any fact-checking of statements anyway. Mainstream political journalism sucks at that already, celebrity journalists aren't going to do better than them. You could call it rationalising her time with Penn as less than a relationship after the fact, but more likely it's just a matter of telling any old BS when you can get away with it.
