RE: Boycott Brie Larson's, Marvel's MCU film - Captain Marvel.
So most of the reviews have actually rated the movie as 2/4 (i.e. mediocre or barely passable), yet the overall Rotten Tomatoes rating is a glowing endorsement at 83%
That's like inspecting a box of goods that got badly mangled during transport and breathlessly declaring it to be in fantastic condition because no single item was completely vaporized.
Quote:Two years ago, Wonder Woman proved a female-led superhero movie could reach the highest levels of the genre, with Gal Gadot proving robust and redoubtable, yet also charming and feminine. I spent Captain Marvel waiting for Gadot. What I got was Brie Larson: charmless, humorless, a character so without texture that she might as well be made out of aluminum.
Captain Marvel might be the first blockbuster movie whose animating idea is fear. Every page of the script betrays terror of what people might say about the film on social media. Give Carol Danvers a love interest? Eek! No, women can’t be defined by the men in their lives! Make her vulnerable? OMG, no, that’s crazy. Feminine? What century are you from if you think females should be feminine? Toward the end of the movie, when a villain preparing for an epic confrontation with Carol, the fighter pilot turned Superwoman, chides her that she will fail because she can’t control her emotions, there is no tension whatsoever. We’ve just spent two hours watching her be utterly unfazed by anything. Giving Carol actual emotions would, of course, lead to at least 27 people calling the film misogynist on Twitter, and directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are petrified of that.
Just to be completely, unerringly, let’s-bubble-wrap-the-universe safe, Boden and Fleck decided to make Danvers stronger than strong, fiercer than fierce, braver than brave. Larson spends the entire movie being insouciant, kicking butt, delivering her lines in an I-got-this monotone and staring down everything with a Blue Steel gaze of supreme confidence. Superheroes are defined by their limitations — Superman’s Kryptonite, Batman’s mortality — but Captain Marvel is just an invincible bore. The screenplay by Boden, Fleck, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, with a story by the three of them plus Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve, presents us with Brie Larson’s Carol being amazingly strong and resilient at the beginning, middle, and end. This isn’t an arc, it’s a straight line.
That guy review-rapes the movie - heh. So they turned her into a Mary Sue just like Rey. Those Mary Sue heroes are the logical conclusion and cropped up in the comics as well since the creators cannot have those women have any weaknesses at all. The immortal all-powerful Dr. Manhattan from the comics had more weaknesses, because he still had human emotions and despaired at the loss of his humanity - being even dumped by a woman.
"Larson's "Social Justice Warrior" (SJW) supporters have branded the backlash as a classic case of misogyny; men who simply can't stand a strong female lead in a superhero movie - however this analysis falls short in light of the overwhelming popularity of hollywood productions such as the Resident Evil, Alien and Kick Ass franchises, not to mention the Hunger Games, the Fifth Element - and of course, badass heroine Sarah Connor from the Terminator series. Ahhh...you beat me to it. This guy's review is savage.
He perfectly shows that the end result of any SJW-driven movie is always a bland perfect female character, which as any scriptwriter knows, is an utter disaster for drama.

Quote:Given the reviews of Captain Marvel from outlets that should be fawning over a female superhero, I’m guessing it really isn’t that good and all this Brie Larson anti-man nonsense is part of a PR campaign to blame the movie’s gross on something other than it sucking.
Was wondering about that.

I recall going into a comic book store at age ~22 with a buddy & there was a non DC, non Marvel title called - 'Invincible' or some such.
Even back then, I realized that a literally invincible character would be pointless & boring.
Although my personal emotions have never been tied into a fictional character, so we now have this Captain Misandrist nonsense nearly two decades later...

There are ways to make an almost invincible all-powerful character intersting:
But it all starts with usually endearing features, humility. One Punch Man never got defeated and probably never can be, but it's still interesting because of the entire setup, the worldbuilding even if it's more a humor series.
The MCU wanted their stand-alone Wonderwoman, but to make Captain Marvel interesting would have broken multiple social justice rules. The character in the comics was never popular, so they would have to re-invent something. You have to realize about Marvel or DC is that they experimented with thousands of characters and in the early days even asked for feedback. If the public liked the story of let's say Daredevil, then it would get continued - if not, then they would shelve it. Out of thousands of created characters a few dozen remained which had iconic levels.

OPM is mostly about the world Saitama is in. They do a good job not focusing the story entirely on him. Superman could really use the same format. Just around when you need him, but focusing the story on other people. In the end, you really enjoy that when all is lost, Saitama/ Superman comes to save the day, as if righting a wrong. And I fall for it everytime. That's good writing.

She set out a fantastic rack in that King Kong movie. It was functionally the only value she added to the film and by the looks of it she was getting help from her friends at Kleenex on that one.
The public will judge a man by what he lifts, but those close to him will judge him by what he carries.

I'm done stomping Brie.
But I'm nowhere near done stomping Disney. I'm betting that Disney stockholders are feeling the same. Having now screwed up TWO of the biggest film franchises in history, you gotta believe that Disney execs are sweating bullets.
Sure, Star Wars and Marvel might be righted and put back on a reasonable path. Just as likely though, they deflate like a pair of old flabby SJW tits, and become mocked and ignored.
Disney has spent god knows how much money building a "Star Wars" land. It might be successful. It might just go bust. At some point, who gives a shit about Star Wars or Avengers any more? We're moving on to the next movie, the next great idea.
The big winner is still George Lucas. He's sitting pretty and smoking big fat joints on his ranch in Marin.

There's rumour of two versions of Endgame being ready. The first version & a version which takes into account Captain Marvel being a dud...
There's rumour of Bob Igor of Disney not wanting a repeat of Solo in the MCU.
Whether true or not. In a few days we'll find out whether the market forces Disney's hand or not.
CM apparently cost $152 mil.
It will require about $450 mil to be profitable.
Whereas Solo only managed $393 mil when folk were actively avoiding it.

While in the West the globalist sheisters are destroying the biggest movie industry with feminazi and SJW themes, the Chinese are marching on creating ever better movies - meet the current biggest blockbuster of the world:
680 mio. $ in China alone. There are no girl-power themes, there are just grizzly male heroes and a grand action SF story told. Fascinating stories and myths haven't really changed for thousands of years - what appealed to humans in ancient China or Greece still appeals to us now.
As a reminder - the field test of Captain Marvel works in comics and the character was so hated that they had to reboot the comic 6 to 7 times in the last few years, because no one gave a shit about it - sending out comics to the detriment of the comic shops is not selling them. You just offload unsellable shit to the retailers. It's funny that the communist China is less communist than the West now.

Mediocre reviews and fan backlash aside, Captain Marvel will still be a decent if not large financial success. You have to keep in mind that despite the propaganda and poor filming it's not a total disaster like for example Ghostbusters was, that it's the first failed movie in the franchise ever, and that loyal audiences take a long time to wise up and react.
The Last Jedi was still amazingly successful despite its feminist idiocy and despite following the shitshow that was The Force Awakens, Solo almost pulled even despite the previous two shitshows, and now despite as many as three shitshows in a row, even some grizzled forum members are still rationalizing how they'll go see it just for the sake of nostalgia or to be informed about it (seriously guys, what the fuck? ).
If this trend continues, expect financial pain for Marvel/Disney to begin no sooner than 2021, when the audiences will finally snap and seriously take out all of their frustrations on an unlucky minor superhero.
